We were talking about these 2 Prince albums not race relations right? I said as far as the org members 'race is moot', because we have had Parade discussions that had a strong mix of black white other members But I've experienced here the same for Lovesexy and even further a large number of Org members seem to ADORE the 1978-1989 period as a Classic of Prince albums. . I wasn't talking about race in general.

Let's do a thread on that. This is all new stuff for me as far as Americans trashing Lovesexy and blacks prefering Lovesexy and whites prefering Parade
I'm American and I'm in love with 1976-1989 Prince music

It's possibly the strongest and most focused album of Prince's career, with some of the very best songs of his career. I wish Prince would make that mistake again, and again. Hundalasiliah!

RJOrion said: its cool...i wasnt trying to start any conflict...just making an observation based on conversations ive had... I think it's a fair point. Look at it rather as people coming from an r'n'b background vs. those from a pop/rock background. Neither albums fit neatly into either of those categories but I see why a person would lean towards one or the other based on their listening habits. My vote is for Parade btw.

Comments on this mark. Prince plays one of the illest, funkiest, monumentally greatest guitar style (don't know what the style is called) the 80's has ever heard. It's from "I Wonder U" And it's only like 20 seconds. It's not that any artist can't play the same chords. But the arrangement is so perfectly put together. You know what I'm talking about in the verse below?
I, dream of you For all time (Click...click,click,click) And so on.... [Edited 4/1/15 14:34pm]

yeah, those rhythm guitar licks on "i wonder U" are truly coldblooded...Of all of Prince's talents, i feel like his greasey funky rhythm guitar fills and turns get criminally underrated...he is on the short list of greatest rhythm guitarists ever..

It would be interesting I guess to know people's race in how they like a Prince album as long as we can include other nationalities and ethnicities Someone of African or Black heritage form England might have a different thought vs someone from America
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
A lot of 'african-americans' might like Lovesexy because it gives them more rock guitar and Parade doesn't. . I mean someone here said more Americans did not like Lovesexy (like Europeans did?) . Overall I think most Prince fans are eclectic in their music tastes,

Parade, without a doubt. My second favorite Prince "era", second only to SOTT. Now...if I could just get a remastered copy of the album.... Make it so, Number One...

I think he was just unsatisfied with the album as a whole. With so much going on in 1985,he probably felt that he didn't have enough time to focus on the music.Maybe that's why the first four songs sound demo-ish?

Well, if you think that CTs Parade, New Position, I wonder U and UTCM were essentially whipped through in one take, he was clearly rushing. They sound great on a summers drive, but I think quality wise they pale into insignificance compared to the work on Eye Know, Alphabet Street, Glam Slam and Annastasia. .

IMHO, Parade is the most overrated Prince album ever. Don't get me wrong, there are very good songs on it (Kiss, Anotherloverholenyohead, Girls&Boys, Sometimes It Snows in April), but the rest to me sounds very standard or sub-par. Venus de Milo is nice, Mountains is OK (I prefer the extended) but the rest? Christopher Tracy's Parade, New Position, I Wonder U, Under the Cherry Moon to me are very average, and I really don't like Life Can Be so Nice and Do U Lie, I really see nothing special about them and always wondered what people found in them.
So to make it short, Lovesex is my jam

I can't believe all this crazy negative talk about Parade. Demos? My ass! You haters are going to eat your LoveSex jam on toast. "Drop that stereo before I blow your Goddamn nuts off, asshole!"

"Parade" is brilliant...genius....100xs better than the film could ever be. Lovesexy I purchased and after awhile almost sold as a used record. It is the only joint from Prince's "golden era" that I don't like. Just couldn't get into it.....would have preferred the "Black" album any day of the week.

Exactly my sentiment, the black album is much more interesting and fun to me than Lovesexy! RIP Prince: thank U 4 a funky Time...

My preference was always that Prince, after his December 1st 1987 enlightenment, should not have canned The Black Album, but turned Lovesexy into a double album. A gatefold sleeve, one half in black, the second half in light. Both seperate albums to show the journey. Ironically, the Lovesexy tour sort of played that journey out. The record should have matched. .

As big a Prince fan as I am, I have always found "Parade" to be a little... dull. I mean, musically and compositionally there's a lot going on, but it never hooked me. "Mountains" is cool, "New Position" is pretty funky... but as an album, it never really grabbed me. It's the one from his "classic period" I would rate the lowest.
"Lovesexy", on the other hand, is an amazing achievement, considering how quickly he recorded it and how cohesive it it. "Alphabet St." is one of the coolest rhythmically unique tracks he's ever recorded, "Eye No" is bouncy and ebullient, "Lovesexy" rocks along, "Anna Stesia" raises the hairs on the back of my neck... It's a great album. I do recognize that it's the end of the "classic period", and you can hear how his insular production environment led to the "plasticizing" of his sound as heard on "Batman" and "Graffiti Bridge", but "Lovesexy" is his final masterpiece.

Yeah, that would have been the best way to release these two albums. A battle of good against evil, each listener could pick a side, or enjoy both (as Prince once sang: "I got two sides and they're both friends"). RIP Prince: thank U 4 a funky Time...

usually dont hear rock guitarists mentioned when lists of funky rhythm guitar masters are discussed, being that rock guitarists are more identifiable by their power chords and lead solos..so seeing keith richards name caught me offguard...but i listened to a few Stones joints to see...and i did smell a little funk coming off his strings...but IMO not on the level of the aforementioned group of Nolen, Collins, McKay, Rogers, Leblanc & Nelson [Edited 4/2/15 11:05am]
