Like others, i got really fond memories of Prince's late 70's period.


One of the the things that stands out the most, about that period, is how "mysterious" Prince was back then. Now its like we basically got the whole story, but back then, Prince was this relatively unknown, unique, fascinating guy, that(i'm looking for the right words)? Well he just blew a lot of people's friggin socks off!



As i kinda alluded to before. Everything about prince was mysterious. From the way he looked, the imagery on his albums, the way he talked, the somewhat vague, album-liner notes, etc. It was all a trip. I remember reading the album liners and wondering, Who is C Moon? Who is Bobby Z ? What's Controversy Music(later) ? Does Prince really Produce, Arrange, Compose and Perform all his music ??? Man, we really tripped the f*ck out on that one.

As far as Photos, Media and whatnot. In my mind, the one journalist, and magazine, that was responsible for exposing people to Prince(early on), was Cynthia Horner, and Right On magazine. I can't speak for every part of the US(and elsewhere)but pretty much up until the time that the fire it up tour was in full swing, prince hadn't received a lot of publicity. So like i said. Cynthia deserves a lot of credit.

Anyway those are some of my memories about early Prince. I'm grateful that i got into him when i did. It left me with some good memories.

i wonder what ever happened to her...Right On magazine deserves alot of credit for giving Prince ALOT of press very early in his career...seems like she knew he was gonna be an Icon before anyone else on a national level...i can vaguely remember an article in Right On where Prince allegedly told her that he was trying to mate his cat with his dog...then years later the song "LaLaLa HeHeHe" came out, and the lyrics matched her story....i never forgot that

Miss Horner, who currently resides in Middlesex County, New Jersey, has contributed over two decades of service to the political community. Her father, Lawrence E. Horner, was the first African-American Mayor of Thousand Oaks, California, and is still the highest-ranking African-American in the Conejo Valley's political community. Currently, she serves as the President of the Kappa Sigma Chapter of Sigma Gamma Rho sorority. Miss Horner was honored as Sigma of the Year by her organization in 2001, and received the Sigma Image Award by the Sigma Gamma Rho's Northeast Region in 2002. The song consists of two verses and multiple repeats of the chorus before a coda at the end. The coda is actually an instrumental track originally called "Jelly Jam" that was added to "Just as Long as We're Together", and modified over time to blend into the main track. So Blue is the eighth track on the album For You, and, two months after the album's release, the track was included as the b-side of the album's first single Soft And Wet, the album's first single (and the first single release of Prince's career).

Recording dates for the song itself are not known, but the album was recorded at the Record Plant, Sausalito, CA, USA, from 1 October 1977 to 22 December 1977, before overdubs and mixing took place, in early January 1978 at Sound Labs, Los Angeles, CA, USA.

Not only does Prince possess the most thrilling R&B falsetto since Smokey Robinson, but this nineteen-year-old. Minneapolis-bred Wunderkind is his own writer-producer and one-man band, playing synthesizer, guitar, drums and percussion. Whereas Prince's debut album (last year's For You) stressed his instrumental virtuosity, Prince teems with hooks that echo everyone from the Temptations to Jimi Hendrix to Todd Rundgren. But Smokey Robinson's classic Motown hits, in which the singer's falsetto signified his erotic thrall, are Prince's chief models.

The biggest difference between Robinson and Prince is the latter's blatant sexuality. Prince sings exclusively in falsetto. Instead of narrative ballads that trace the progress of relationships, Prince's songs are erotic declarations issued on the dance floor or in bed, virtually interchangeable arenas here. These compositions begin and end in sexual heat. The garish, synthesized textures of such tunes as "I Wanna Be Your Lover" and "Why You Wanna Treat Me So Bad?" don't so much imitate a band backing a singer as enclose his voice in a feverish calliope of the mind, underscoring the urgency of lyrics like "I wanna be the only one you come for," "Sexy dancer, when you rub my body/...it gets me so hot" and "I want to come inside of you." The simplicity of Prince's words, hooks and rhythms are pure pop. With a trace more sophistication, he could become a solo Bee Gees of the libido.

Do You Feel Like Dancing? is an unreleased track performed live, and perhaps recorded, in 1973 by Grand Central, a band consisting of Prince, André Anderson and Charles Smith, as one of the few original compositions known to be played by the band at the time, along with Danger Lover, Funk It Up and Sex Machine (they mostly played cover versions of current hits). It is not known who in the group wrote the track, or if it was a collaborative effort, but it is certainly possible that this is Prince's earliest known composition. It is not known if the track was later considered for inclusion on any project.

Don't You Wanna Ride?
This song exists as a simple demo recorded in 1976 by Prince on a tape recorder or a 4-track recorder. It is a lively, funky number created around an acoustic guitar riff. Prince sings in a double-tracked falsetto voice accompanied only by his acoustic guitar. Interestingly, his normal voice can also be heard in places. Prince refers to himself as "the golden lover" and he goes on to describe an encounter with "a foxy lady down in New Orleans" using sailing as a metaphor for their lovemaking.

Wendy Melvoin: I'll just go back quickly when I was 13 and my twin sister and I used to sneak out of the house and we used to go to a club in hollywood called the Starwood. Prince was credited for all vocals, songwriting, every instrument played on the album, as well as the whole arrangements and production. The only credit given to someone other than Prince is a co-writing credit to Chris Moon for the lyrics of Soft And Wet. Moon and Prince disagreed over credits due on My Love Is Forever, which was financially settled after the album release.

This period went be so fast, he was barely started before the Prince music was being created and the band was on the road again

It's kind of funny seeing him pose with all of these people. I guess because he was up and coming it was the "promotional" thing to do. They must have been publicists, DJ's, music exec's and such. He looked like he didn't even want to be there in most of those shots (lol).

I know, he generally looks agitated

But the Prince years he looks more comfortable
