i think some people are co-mingling LIVE covers with RECORDED ones. For me, "Another Love" is number one with a bullet. Will have to think of which others would make what would be a pretty short list. Right now only Crimson and Clover comes to mind. The Stylistics joints were just "ok" to me.
YES, MANY TIMES. It must suck not to be able to appreciate the greatness of A Case of You, Honky Tonk Woman, Whole Lotta Love, One of Us, Crimson and Clover, AnotherLove, etc. i'm pretty sure Joni liked his version so I'll think I'll go with her expertise rather than yours.
.
go with your own expertise. Using someone else's opinion to justify your opinion and discredit a third person's opinion is ridiculous.
.
Seems like the kind of people who quote the "experts of taste" to justify themselves are also the kind of people who get too sensitive when they read opinions that differ from their own. It's personal taste in music. It does not matter at all. Other people's opinions definitely do not matter.

I don't absolutely need validation of my opinions, trust me when I say that, but it's also stupid (and a genuine character flaw) to go through life only considering your own opinions. None of us always have all the answers, a fact quite a few denizens of the Org seem to forget. For sure, the opinion of the originator of something will have more weight than the opinion of some random poster wishing to make absolute statements.
Too many times, people come here to state their opinion as an absolute fact, as if they had gotten to the bottom of this thing for the benefit of all. Who said their specific sensibilities are the end all and be all? Narcissistic people do this all the time.
I am thinking of all the song Prince has covered over the years (on record) and I have to say NONE of them were any good...
I cant make you love me - simply horrible
la la la means i love u = corny
betcha by golly wow - awful
everyday is a winding road - is complete utter horse shit
I know that everyone is entitled to their own opinions and all, but THAT^ the biggest bullshit that I ever readied. Anyone that didn't like Prince's excellent cover of those Philly soul classics has absolutely no respect for soul music at all.
i like betcha but really don't like la la la. So relieved I have at least some respect for soul music. Phew!

very, very true. Sorry, I was in a combative mood last night because of some work-related nonsense.
I Can't Make U Love Me is the joint!!!! It has been covered quite a few times & to me P's is by far the best. He did to it what Whitney did to I Will Always Love You.
I love the Staples' version, I don't think it's "crushed" by his version at all, though I love his as well.
It's just a different vibe, theirs is poignant coming at a time where inequalities were more stark, it's lyrically more relevant. Prince's version is partly about his situation as an artist, which he links to the historical inequality. It's also paying homage to the Staples.
I didn't think much of their version when I first heard it (after hearing his) but now it's one of those songs I enjoy in two styles, each is compelling, just differently.

I can't make you love me - in my opinion is outstanding
Generally I would say your reaction to a cover song by any artist depends on; A) how much affection you hold for the original and B) whether you actually even know the original.
IMHO "I Can't Make You Love Me" by Prince is in fact superior to Bonnie Raitt's version BUT the later George Michael version is the definitive version and way better than Prince's (and I am a massive Prince fan - obviously).
'I loved him then, I love him now and will love him eternally. He's with our son now.' Mayte 21st April 2016 = the saddest quote I have ever read! RIP Prince and thanks for everything.

There is no comparison if u ask me:
Both versions are great, the Staples is the reference as it should.
I think the problem with these three covers is simply, the original versions are already great. There was no room for improvement.Nobody (not even Prince) should ever attempt to cover Philly soul classics by The Delfonics and the Stylistics! Furthermore,I think there are only a handful of artists who can remake a song and make it sound better than the original.Luther Vandross was a genuis at that but let's face it,Prince isn't.
