Joy in Repetition: Prince brilliance EVry so often, through the thousands of Prince discs that I own, I will come across a rendition of a album track - live or studio - that strikes me as utter brilliance. Joy in Repetition does that to me almost every time I stumble across it. I never go to my collection to select it specifically. I just come upon some version of it from some gig and I get swept away - the lyrics, the guitar work, the haunting vibe.

you are right that prince puts a little extra mustard in it every time he does that song. if that song is ever in a setlist for a prince concert than u know prince is in rare form & u r going to have a beautiful night. if u want to understand the genius of prince-study what he does when he performs that song.

My favorite Prince song! I wish a proper release of the haunting drum beginning was out there in studio quality. [Edited 3/15/15 15:55pm] __________________________________________________

this song is a masterpiece and if its all i ever listened to again i'd be happy......i've described it before as intimate and languid ....it's like water that matches the temp of your body, encompassing and ethereal.

It's also a little bit behind the beat, Just enough that it turns me on.

No joy in the repetition? A robin sings a masterpiece that lives and dies unheard...

I agree! I remember sitting in my room as a much younger boy and heard that incredible slow haunting drum intro on one of my first bootlegs (Charade or Chocolate box) and it just draws you in. Haunting, passionate, honest and pure genius!
And the live renditions of this song are always fantastic, my favorite would be the one in 2002, in the New york aftershow at The World club, it always blow me away. And the guitar!! It is pretty much a perfect song the way it builds up and ends.

I don't know about anyone else but I enjoyed the live performance from the "Emancipation" premiere. Really emotional....His quick guitar solo at the end of the song was amazing. You could see he was going through a lot of pain but he pulled it off.

Joy mixed with both versions of Beautiful Strange make one hell of of song. FOOLS multiply when WISE Men & Women are silent.

Best versions are Dance 2 the desert groove (Rio 2007), the European soundcheck from ONA with Maceo taking the final solo ("Maceo, its your house."), and the opening of North Sea 2013 with Cassandra playing piano close up on the big round screen at the beginning and Maceo handing the solo to Prince on the high Aflat.
But it doesnt work unless the crowd is involved. "Soul Psychedelicide" and the title refrain need to be crowd-sung or He gets pissed off and doesnt deliver on the solo.

I need 2 check on where I got the other version from. I could have sworn the original version was on cd. I guess it was only released on the video. [Edited 3/18/15 11:23am] FOOLS multiply when WISE Men & Women are silent.
