I'm 44. I was a closet 1999 fan. Friends were all into big hair rock. So was I to a point. . Purple Rain was really the album that turned me into a purple hippie from then on. "Hey, I got the butta 4 ya muffin, honey.. I'm just 2 old 2 hold the knife!"

I'm 37 (born in '78). My first Prince record was 1999 (My family always bought a lot of records) though my first exposure to him was my cousins copy of the Prince LP. Snuck into the theater with my sister and cousin to see Purple Rain. When it was time to lick those little stamps to send back to the Columbia House Music Club Prince records were always my choices.

I became a fan at 12, back when I thought Little Red Corvette was about having "sex" in a car and that "When Doves Cry" was shockingly vulgar for having that "the sweat of your body covers me" line. Maybe do, just not like did before

Been on the planet 45 years. I was 11 in 1981 when I first started hearing "Controversy" on the radio and liking it. But when I first heard "1999"...it was like God calling my name--not with words but with emotion and sensations. (And I was an atheist by that time, and for several years after, so that should give you an idea how powerful an impression his music made on me.) Talk about a bolt of lightning. I'd never had an experience like that with anyone else's music. Not even close. So it was at the age of 12, upon hearing "1999", that I became a 'fan' and it was IMMEDIATE. That song MADE me sit up and pay it attention like I didn't have a choice in the matter. (I did. I just loved his music too much to put up any resistance .)

I started actually getting into P's music right before entering the seventh grade (so, 2010). And I'm turning 18 this year, so I guess Crystal Ball is the closest record to my birthdate?

I'm 44...damn where did the years go
My brother who is five years my elder and had his first job at the time, came back from the wrecka stow with the 1999 12" single. I played it all the time, the synth, the funk! after that i was hooked from 1983. ......and I pestered my mum for money to buy the previous Prince albums, although Dirty Mind and Controversy were not appreciated in my house if I played them too loudly \o/\o/ ° The Breakdown = Best Prince song for 20 years

Still playing AOA in the car. Perfectly alligned with your timeline. Bought all back catalogue after "Purple Rain" came out. caught up with everything by the time "Around the World in a Day" came out. Remember taking the bus to the mall to buy that album the day it was released. Good times...
