Prince's "B" sides are better than a whole bunch of artist's "Best" of.

The beauty of this thread is the fact that Prince had so much good music that he had to put some of it on B-sides. It was a glorious time to be a fan, going to the record store and discovering these gems.

I don't know how any of you can narrow
it down to one. Best I could do is name
a ten best Prince b-sides. But picking
just one - that would be unthinkable.

It's a toss up between "17 Days" and "She's Always in My Hair" IMHO

Make it so, Number One...

What artist with the amount of releases as Prince isn't on the downside of their career?

I have to say my top 3 are:

Alexis de Paris or

Another Lonley Christmas - the extended version, not the edited version that appeared on The Hits / The B-Sides

Love or Money (extended version of course)

Fair enough. But still... B-sides being better than his current output. B-Sides!!!

Oh well. lol

I think it's fair to be a naysayer if it adds to the thread.
This is gratuitous.

At least be funny about it.

The Extended 'Hello' has always been my favourite. It's hard to choose a fave - except for a few, the b-sides should have been top-billing. I have different reasons for liking all of them, but 'Hello' is chock full of musical ideas and plus: the idiosyncracies that make me love Prince. There's a sh*tload going on in that song.

I can forgive a sped-up guitar solo for the cause.

It's usually been one of the three:

The SOTT era B-sides have been gaining more love lately. "How Come U Don't Call Me Anymore" has definitely the feel of a "classic" piece of music, but I think the fans like the ones with beats a little bit more.

THIS. My own preference: She's Always In My Hair is my personal favorite, When Doves Cry/17 Days is the best A-side/B-side combo, and Erotic City is the one that I actually heard on the radio like it was a true A-side.

Right, these were not throw away songs

Just so much he couldn't put on albums
And HELLO created as a perfect musical response to a pop life situation

I always wonder why no B side 4 Girls & Boys or AnotherLover.. They sure had a good number that would work the flip side: Old Friends 4 Sale, Sexual Suicide(would have been a hot Girls & Boys B side), Heaven, Eternity, All My Dreams, Mia Bocca(as a duet with Jill)

It depends on my mood, but I would probably agree with "Erotic City". Compile his B-Sides from 1983-1986 and you have the follow-up to "Purple Rain" that every new fan was dying to hear lol.

Yeah, that would make a hell of an album!

Erotic City is also my favorite B-side most likely. How Come U Don't Call Me Anymore is following very close though. Other very good ones are 17 Days, She Is Always In My Hair and Love Or Money. And then so many more!

RIP Prince: thank U 4 a funky Time...

Ain't this thread asking to compare apples to oranges?

There are miles between "Erotic City" and "Alexa de Paris".

"Greatest" by genre is kinda mandatory when it comes to a work as eclectical as Prince's.

OK, based on strictly personal preferences, it has to be Shockadelica.

Just because I remember listening to the vynil (did we mention that vynil is mandatory? biggrin ), amp on 11.

That intro!
There's this ad lib, like an indian chant, and then he does it again, in case we didin't get it.
Then you have "the lights go out — the lights go out", like "Oops, I forgot to mute the background vocals tracks".

There is not a single thing that is not pure genius in Shockadelica.

The performance is Camille at his most unabashed.
The seemingly lo-fi production (wet noises, slowed down tapes, distorted kicks) traumatized Beck, Massive Attack and countless others.
The bridges are brilliant.
The guitar is insane.

The lights go out, the smell of doom

Again is creepin' into your lonely room

Is this a dream or is this real or is this real?

Or is this just a mirage you feel?

Well, lucky us, the mirage has been engraved in wax for ever.

I would have to go with Shockadelica. Followed by She's always in my hair and Erotic City. If we are talking non album tracks, the Shockadelica would be joined by Peach and Good Love.

Peach : Like "Shhh", I'm always like meh for the studio versions,
and then you hear live version after live version and you think this is the greatest thing he's ever done.
Maybe the same applies for Plectrumelectrum.
The whole album should have been a live, with crowd noises, Marshall larsens and all (not the ONA too-polished sound).
Instead, we have this bizarre songs that are supposed to kick ass in our headphones and heads only,

when clearly all of the rock material on PE is meant to be shredded live.

Good Love :
Like "17 Days", "Good Love" reached the Billboard's #1 in several parallel universes.
It's a Beatles Sour Cherry Lollypop, it's a kaleidoscope, it's Technicolor Day One,
it's naive and joyous in the most beautiful way.
It's waaay more "sex in the summer" than "Sex In The Summer", if you ask me.

The more I read about the 1986/87 era current threads,
the more I'm convinced that he should have released Dream Factory,
wait 9 months, then released Camille, wait another 9 months, then release Crystal Ball.

You know, I'm kinda starting to have an understanding, and even sympathy
for the WB executives. Because honestly, what more can you do?
When you have a guy that pours on you, in a year, five LPs and each one of them
screams genius and deserved to be released, what can you do?

We picture WB like being exclusively composed of nasty greedy executives,
but there must have been some A&R staff that felt bad, tortured to have to choose
and cut through all this good, cohesive stuff.

I guess SOTT was the best kinda cohesive collage they could do.
Hence the "White Album" or "London Calling" badge critics gave it.
But no, these albums were, separately, cohesive as "1999" is. Sound-wise, composition-wise...

They simply had to bring it down to earth.
Even for a star like Prince, and even if you're a major (moreover, we're talking pre-Time Warner years, so not as rich)
you can't have workforces (marketing, media, publicity) weekly focused only on Prince, for 2 years.

It's pretty sad, because the whole pop music world would be a different place.
I sincerely don't give a fuck that D'Angelo knows about "Movie Star".
The whole cult status just reminds of how much the public has missed,

and it does not matter on which scale of fame.
Eighties musicians and musicologist did not know who Prince really was,
and thinking about it, at the time, neither did we hardcore fans!
We already thought he was kicking some asses, but oh boy how little did we know.

Imagine : You go buy the album where "U Got The Look" is (I know, I'm rewriting history here), you're the average Joe
and you buy it because the duet reached the Billboard.

You go home, and then you get "Housequake", "Good Love", "Strange Relationship",
not to mention "If I Was Your Girlfriend" on ONE ALBUM ?

Man, what an album Camille would have been.
Critics would have deemed it Album Of The Year like worldwide, man!
Well they kind of did with SOTT, but I'm talking about being #1 on the records polls for 3 consecutive years...
Maybe that is what he's after (in his bubble) with last year's double-project release.

P.S. : As long as I'm rewriting history, "Slow Love" should have been sung by Camille.
I always knew there was something not quite right about it, but I couldn't pinpoint it.
The lyrics would have been corny-dirty, much better than corny only.
Imagine the "Young is the night" and "Let's take our time" stretched by lascive Camille...
That would have segued perfectly into "Hot Thing".
