"30th Anniversary of Around the World in a Day" (soulhead.com) In the spring of 1985, there were two types of Prince fans–those who boarded the violet-hued bandwagon years before Purple Rain (both the album and the film) became the pop culture sensation of the year, and those who were recent converts to the church of soulfully spooky electric funk. What was once a cult had seemingly overnight turned into a crowded congregation of fans who were turned out by the haunting beauty of the single “When Doves Cry,” which was in constant rotation on MTV as well as Black radio; the release of Purple Rain in theaters two months later marked a new age and millions of new listeners.

Yet another golden opportunity, left to fade in the wind. I knew from the start that I loved you with all my heart.

In all honesty though, are we even surprised at this point in the game? I feel like I can't be disappointed because I've adjusted my expecatations accordingly.
If Prince wants my money, he'll do something to get it A robin sings a masterpiece that lives and dies unheard...

Believe me, I'm not hardly surprised nor disappointed. I was merely stating the obvious. I knew from the start that I loved you with all my heart.

Is he one of the only artists that never produces a deluxe or remaster of his albums for his fans??
I mean this is stupid... 1999, Purple Rain... Still no deluxe editions over 30 years after...

1. There is no way of confirming how much money Prince actually has. How much he's worth or how much he's made in his career is not indication of that either. 2. Not much point in owning your masters if your'e doing about as much with them as you did when you didn't own them... 3. He's been able to record anytime he's wanted for at least 25 years now. 4. George Michael charges about as much. I'm pretty sure Cher does as well. 5. What about by the public? No.
Prince can't record a hit. Any the only reason he does whatever he wants is becase he surrounds himself with asskissers and people who don't say no.... for a while. Always cry 4 love, never cry 4 pain.

what was squandered? Are we talking about a 30th annaversary remaster? Or is there a suggestion that something was squanderd with the Around the World in a Day release itself? I always thought not doing Purple Rain 2.0 was brilliant on Prince's part. It would have been too easy to release Purple Rain 2.0. But going down that path doesn't lead to Sign O the Times and much of his other successful post Purple Rain releases. When you get caught in a phenomina like Purple Rain/Saturday Night Fever/Thriller, it's a long term mistake to follow it up with more of the same.
Until his WB fued, Prince was quite remarkable in his ability to continue to have hit records with songs that sounded nothing alike, even overcoming ones in between that bombed. A then record 15 straight years of top 10 hits with some number 1s scattered in there. I'm not sure he pulls that off if he releases Purple Rain 2.0.
If we're just talking about remasters, I'm not sure why remasters have to be done on anniversaries. Some of his albums could really benefit from that.

If Prince did not have to do the Purple Rain World Tour, and if he didn't allow the 'need to duplicate the movie performance' he might have continued with a different direction:Purple Rain 2.0
a lot of band members were saying it was that 'rigid' format that sorta killed it for Prince. But I just think he did plan it well. The later run of shows, had more people guesting:Susannah Eric Leeds Jerome, Wally & Gregory, Sheila E, Eddie M, Susy and Sheila E's brother, as well as Apollonia 6 There is a lot more that could have been done with the show where he gave them Purple Rain but with a lot of twists

1. You've got access to Prince's bank records? He really needs a class on password protection. 2. Big whoop, if all he's going to do with them is let them turn to dust. 3. Hasn't that been the case since 1996? 4. True but with the exception of Musicology - not on the strength of anything he's recorded in the last 15 - 20 years. 5. So does Jay Z and Beyonce. Big whoop. 6. Yes, all those after the Oscars and Grammys parties certainly paid off. Sincerly, kudos to him on that.
My comment wasn't about 30 years ago. My comment was about today and his letting yet another the 30 year anniversary fade in the wind without capitalizing on it.

I'm still holding out for a Tambourine 12" extended dance mix release... It could happen

Around the time period, I would not be suprised if there is one

only thing that could be " better" is more releases...

I dunno. There's something about those everything and the kitchen sink anniversary editions that kind of robs something from their original moment in time. ATWIAD is classic in its exact form.

A beautiful, vibrant, colorful record I love so much. I remember hating it upon first listen.. it made no sense and sounded weird and annoying in comparison to Purple Rain. Now I realize it was an amazing move, it was just so different from PR (not even just musically) that's it hard to compare the two so I end up loving both for their differences. If he released a similar album (aka Lavender Rain) then I would judge the latter much more harshly.. I think ATWIAD's difference from PR saves it being the follow-up to the biggest album of all time (in Princeland). Maybe do, just not like did before

I really don't see why he went through all that trouble to get his master recordings,if he's not even gonna do anything with 'em and as someone pointed out in another thread,Warner Bros. still owns the licensing rights to these albums.

As has been said many times before, Prince clearly doesn't give a fuck about his fans. All he has to do is hand over the keys to someone at WB or any major label exec or whomever wants to release Prince's shit and let them go nutz with it. Prince doesn't even need to get personally involved.
Just sign off on some remasters/vault stuff and keep releasing shit every year and Prince will be to recoup a little. But no he can't be fucked because he's a bitch LOL and as has also already been said on here, nothing really sells big anymore so he is fucked now LOL if he thought he could get any sort of good change with the masters he now has.
Again, let some others guys go through the vault. He doesn't need to get involved but nah, just sit on it and be a lil' bitch. Dude's in his 50's now and he still cares about youtube and taking shit down. That proves he does care about his career, yet he still shits on his fans?
OK rant over LOL.

. Bullshit. .
. Really? The Kobalt deal went nowhere, he was shopping the 3EG record around in early 2014 and that went nowhere, and then he had to whine all Summer to get WBR to release the 3EG record. .
. Except for the numerous times that he didn't. Remember the disastrous 3EG club tour where they had to cut ticket prices in half and still had hundreds left they ultimately gave away? "21 nights in LA"? .
. .
. Really? You look at Prince's career and you claim "well that went as well as could be hoped"? © Bart Van Hemelen

One of my favorite albums of all time. A timeless masterpiece. I wonder how things would´ve turned out if he had dedicated a bit more time to this project instead of making another movie. Almost no real promo videos, no tour, no concept (though it is kind of a concept album, isn´t it? ). Like Sign of the Times, this one could´ve benefitted greatly from a tour, more videos and more promotion in general.

I will always love this album. It just screams spring for me. I have such great memories from when it came out...I drove my friends nuts playing it so much back then. I still listen to it regularly. Love the b-sides, the extended versions, the videos (America is my fave video of all time from him...crazy energy on that one). Beautiful music to this guys ears!

I wouldn't trade Under The Cherry Moon (film) for a different version of Around The World In A Day (album). No way! [Edited 4/23/15 16:38pm] What?

lol what IF he put in the promo time, because I too felt with such a change in style he needed to promo this from dark drunken bars performing Tempation to classical halls of Europe & New York City performing Condition of the Heart with full band singers and orchestra Videos videos videoS Paisley Park, Hello, Pop Life . oh sorry I drifted... . What IF he put in the promo time with ATWIAD and then slowed down just a bit to complete a more 'colorful' Under the Cherry Moon, -which means there should have been band performance and proteges throught the movie, and the original director left to do the job? . I think both albums could have been taken to higher plateau as well as the movie.
