Private Joy by Latoya Jackson = Worst Prince cover ever recorded? Or at least the cheesiest? I like Latoya - as a reality TV star; not a singer.

Then again, has anyone ever taken Latoya's singing seriously, let alone Latoya Jackson, the woman is a complete train wreck. Got some kind of love for you, and I don't even know your name

I like it and the rest of the album as well BTW Cheyne dis another pretty similar cover at the time on the Weird Science OST. What makes me trip is that in 1984 BOTH Jackson sisters covered a P song: La Toya did PJ and Rebbie did IFFY A COMPREHENSIVE PRINCE DISCOGRAPHY (work in progress ^^): https://sites.google.com/...scography/

She does an amazing live-version of 1999, it's on youtube. She also plays keyboard. I´ve never seen her do Private Joy live, but i´m sure it sounds just as good live as on record, maybe better. Latoya was never really a studio artist, she was born to perform her hits on stage. She once said her music really comes alive when she can connect with her audience, her fans.
The woman sold so many records, but still she keeps on going. She lives for her music, it´s in her veins.
Anway, I think her version her Private Joy is the real version. Prince might have written it, but she made it her own. Most people even think she wrote Private Joy, but unlike a lot of her other hits, she didn´t.
I think she wanted to give Prince his moment to shine, as he was struggling selling his Controversy album. It´s funny that Latoya´s version was the biggest hit of Controversy and made people notice Prince.
Latoya gave Prince a chance to make it and he became a superstar, just like Latoya already was and still is.
I love her.

Something that does drive me crazy if that her modified lyrics for this song are incorrectly posted on various lyrical websites.
She clearly states:
"I strangled Cleopatra (strangled Cleopatra) You belong to Toy
Her nickname is Toy (short for Latoya) and the lyric makes sense in the same context that Prince sang this part of the song
But, instead these crazy ass websites state the lyrics incorrectly as:
"I strangled Cleopatra (strangled Cleopatra)
Always a fan of the purple one... A robin sings a masterpiece that lives and dies unheard...

Surely she changed the wrong lyric. The line she changed is "you belong to Prince" which rhymes with "You been mine ever since". As she changed it to "you belong to Toy" then she should have changed "Mine ever since" to something that rhymes with Toy. "I strangled Cleopatra (strangled Cleopatra) You belong to Toy

Understood but she did make it her own, slight adjustment to the lyrics included. I'm just glad she did not do the same with Prince's song "Sister" Could you imaging Latoya Jackson shouting out the lyrics to "Brother"?

Did anyone else think it was a little weird how Michael Jackson always tried to put Latoya in his music videos often in questionable roles. But maybe the guy was just being charitable because his other siblings were already successful enough back then and Latoya was the only one who was coasting on the Jackson brand. Maybe do, just not like did before
