Rock in Rio You all want to know when Prince started losing it....this concert might be the perfect example of him chasing fads and trying to stay mainstream without being true to himself. It is the first time I have ever viewed this and I cringed. I'm a loyal customer but....I wish this never happened. Comments..... Love41Another 💜

It's been a while since I watched it but I don't remember it being that bad. |

Haven't watched it in years. I'll have to dig it out..I don't recall it being that bad either but I hated that his guitar was drowned out during "Bambi".

It was a sort of beginning to the end of him being regarded as a "serious" musician. It was probably one of the earliest shows to feature the Star Trek Next Generation Uniforms that screamed funny but not supposed to be funny. Then again, those awful costumes may have been on the Nude Tour, I don't remember. I usually close my eyes when nonsense is on screen. But those Brazil and Argentina shows were pretty much where Prince embraced nonsense non-stop chanting and rapping where there used to be real music.
There was some good music, but it was difficult to see such a great musician dumb it down to the point where you had to question his sanity or possible drug use.
I know there are drugs that made people believe they could fly, believe they were immortal, but I still have a hard time believing that there is a drug that would make Tony M in the band a good idea, so I don't think Prince really did drugs, other than a try or two. I think pure insantiy did his live shows in...with him in remission for the 2002 ONA tour, and the 2004 Musiciology tour, which were pretty awesome. And he was brilliant in spots for the 2013/14 3EG shows for the most part...just don't get me started on the years where Crowd Flunky Shelby Shouts at the top of her lungs non-stop where there could be singing and music involved instead of nonsense.

"Star Trek Next Generation"...lol! Good one. M.C. Hammer and C&C Music Factory were big back then with the dancers and big bands. Maybe P was trying to cash in on that sound and look?

sorry, i disagree with you.
1. the one night alone shows were not really entertaining and musically NOT genius (if that can be say about prince anyway. He is great, but a genius- no - not really). I would even say, that the one i ve seen was horrible...Just playing each song just for 10 min was boring as hell. Glad, that my wife couldnt come with me that night.
2. What so bad about it, that prince used for the first time dancers, that could actually dance? (compare it to the fat Guy from 1986, that couldn´t really move his body..Sorry, but that was awful...)
3. The costumes from the 88 were really mehh..so for me, Prince looked for the first time like a man and not a drag Queen
the 1991 Era - made me a fanl, and displays the best dance-routines by prince ever and some of the best shows.
4. I prefer the more poppy sound of that time, than the jazz-Bassed shit he started doing in 1986-1988....and 2001. too much jazzy horns. I prefer the funky ones from NPG Horn-Heads.
So, for me the period from 1991 - 1993 was great [Edited 2/22/15 7:19am]

I actually like the sound of those South AMerican shows, P was trying new material, it wasn't the Nude tour sound anymore nor the DéP tour sound yet, those shows are a pretty nice oddity in his career. Another big act that year in Rio was Guns 'N Roses, and we've seen what a shambles they became. Meanwhile Prince has continued to wow audiences and fellow musicians alike.

I really like the Rock in Rio shows and the other South American show. Rio is a strange show in the sense that he's debuting the really early "Diamonds and Pearls" material and kinda testing the stuff to see how it held up live. You can see the transitions between the Nude Tour show and what he was thinking for a D&P tour. The performance of "Purple Rain" is one of my all time favorite performances of that song.

I thought the show was fantastic. Loved the switch to "Horny Pony". To me this was the playful "Camille" Prince in concert. Very hard funked up arrangements of all the songs. He was energetic to the extreme. My art book: http://www.lulu.com/spotl...ecomicskid

What I meant by chasing fads which really wasn't a passing fad was the incorporation of rap. The show basically starts out with the Game Boys and it has not aged well at all. Prince when he does his thing is always fantastic. But that was definitely him trying to stay mainstream and in my opinion really not being his true artistic self. Love41Another 💜

In 1991 rap music was not mainstream.

Public Enemy, RUN DMC, De La Soul, Salt N Pepa all had hits in the late 80s/early 90s and I'm sure I forget some. Oh yeah, rap was mainstream allright...

I'd say rap post 1990 was pretty mainstream, considering the juggernauts that were Please Hammer Don't Hurt 'Em and To The Extreme. "That's when stars collide. When there's space for what u want, and ur heart is open wide."

RUN DMC had one top 10 with walk this way in '86 and never broke the top 10 again. De La Sould never broke the US top 10 with a single. Salt n Pepper didn't crack the US top 10 until 1993.

But 1991 are you saying you could tune into mainstream radio and hear 2 or 3 hiphop tracks in a row?

PE and others sold millions of albums by that point, so it's a bit questionable to refer to is as any sort of underground stuff though. [Edited 2/24/15 12:44pm]

I remember watching that performance & thinking
how awful it was..A guy who once set the trends was now Following them.. I had that same feeling with that AMA 1994 one as well.. It's amazing that when Prince does it right Such as the 1987 MTV awards.. He can kick ass & is the best when he's on his Game. [Edited 2/25/15 2:05am] BOB4theFUNK
