Co-sign. I didn't get it either. Release what?
.
There were more than a few potential singles that could haved propped this album up. I made a lot of Prince fans by lending them copies of Emancipation. I liked that, for once, he just dumped the entire mess on us over 3 records and let us pick and choose what styles we liked instead of making me sit throuhg three ballads, three rock songs, three pop tracks and one weird one.
.
Disc 2 is rather beautiful and very heart felt and vulnerable. ""Friend, Lover, Sister, Mother/Wife"", "Dreamin About U", "Sex in the Summer", "Soul Sanctuary" and "Curious Child" all stand the test of time.
.
Disc 3 has some pretty cool bottom end funk on it. "Slave", "Face Down" and the title track. I love the cover of "One of Us".
.
Disc 1 is the weakest but "Right Back Here in mY Arms", "White Mansion", " Somebody's Somebody" and "I Can't Make U Love Me" are fine. "In This Bed I Scream" is an all time sleeper track.
.
Boil it down and it's a good double album. I wish he'd give us another song dump like this again, just so I can pick the fruit I enjoy and leave the rest on the branch. Maybe that's why I enjoyed PE/AOA so much.

So please tell me, what was so dumb about my original question?

it was discussed around that time amongst fans

Oh. So it must be true then. Jesus Christ, just post some facts/links or what have you and quit doing drive byes. Either that or put down your phone and stop posting and shitting up a potentially good thread. If there's video for every song on the Emancipation album then that's news to everyone.

Video for every song, my nutz. "Drop that stereo before I blow your Goddamn nuts off, asshole!"

. Plenty of fans have stupid ideas. There were people who insisted a "Prince demo" exists of each track he gave to another artist, for instance. . Also, considering that Emancipation changed in scope quite a lot (once upon a time it was going to be "54 tracks", IIRC), would there also be videos for all those other songs? Would there be a video for each version of each song (since the 60 minute running time of each disc wasn't a happy accident, so some songs must have been edited along the way)? . false. at least not everywhere. I just checked my old Access database and the over-the-counter price I paid on Nov 20th 1996 day 1 after release at a standard record store in my homewtown was 469 ATS that is equal to 34 EUR, adapted for inflation this would be at least 45 EUR or even more today [Edited 3/12/15 1:17am] Vanglorious... this is protected by the red, the black, and the green. And later the price dropped dramatically. I've seen it on sale at € 3.

BETCHA BY GOLLY WOW was possibly the worst choice of lead single in his carreer, along with TGRES. No wonder why EMANCIPACTION was a flop. Very bad choice of single, despite great promotion by Prince and tabloid press coverage. I would have released FACEDOWN on 1st single with the music video which was great too, along with HOLY RIVER for pop stations. Mr HAPPY could have been a hit too.

Yes. That and the sheer size of it. If you're a casual fan, like I am of the P-funk, you're not going to rush out and buy 3 CDs at once.

. I'm pretty sure it was "3 CDs for the price of 2". I think I paid BEF 1200 for it on the day of release; regular CDs were around BEF 700. © Bart Van Hemelen

It might have been the case that it was supposed to have been three CDs for the price of two, but most stores sold it at pretty outrages prices anyway. I remember the Mellon Collie release by the Smashing Pumpkins was supposed to be two CDs for the price of one, but most stores wouldn't sell it as cheaply regardless of what the band had wanted themselves.

The death of his baby and EMI's implosion is what did this album in. Dont think I blame Prince on this one. [Edited 3/12/15 8:22am]

In Germany, the set was sold for a full price typical of a 3-CD set in most places, at least in the beginning. I remember that I purchased the set from my local Karstadt for something like 50 DM, which would be approximately 26 €. A CD at that time often was sold for ca. 15-20 DM, so there was nothing like a discount on the set from day 1 or anything like that, at least not in my area.

26€? CDs in Germany must have been really cheap. [Edited 3/12/15 9:15am]
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
It was $24 bucks when I bought it on day one--and stayed that way. Most CD's were going for around $17 or 18, so it was just pretty cheap in my experience.

. I seriously doubt regular CD prices were DM 15-20. Midprice CDs in Belgium were BEF 400 at that time, rougly DM 20. I know CDs were cheaper in Germany, but I doubt they were about half the price of what the average CD cost in Belgium or Holland, considering they'd likely come from the same factories. © Bart Van Hemelen

Have you guys nothting better to talk about than the recollected price of Emancipation from way back when? I mean come on. What a waste of intelligence. Alot of you hear on this thread are extremely bright and well informed when it comes to Prince and his music. That's why I visit this forum. This thread was about one of his most personal albums and his enthusiam and it's supposed lack of success. Forget the price of the CD back in 1996/7. Let focus on the music again.
