Prince's generosity to fans and the underserved in PDX 2013

So we paid about $200-$300 to see 3RDEYEGIRL and Prince rock Roseland in Portland, OR in Spring 2013. I believe my anticipation for and appreciation of "Plectrum Electrum" comes from this concert......it was face-melting, it was scorching and better than when I saw him in 1988 at the L.A. Colessium in support of "Lovesexy." Totally worth it, a life changer and one of the top 5 live music concerts I have ever seen.

What we all didn't know is that Prince and Company didn't pocket the proceeds, it went to students from one of our seriously underfunded public high schools so the kids in the jazz band could compete in a NYC contest. What do you think about this? I'm a former lurker (10 years of it) and a recent poster that notices a lot of griping on this site about the man we allegedly dig and thought it would be cool to exposet stuff he doesn't get much publicity for. here is a link to and NME article about this for your perusal:

Cool find. Somebody posted about it back in 2013, but a reminder of good work is always worthwhile.

(Btw, I used the search box and discovered the 2013 thread. I don't have some kind of super memory, just in case you're thinking that I remembered it off the top of my head).

Yeah, I remember this.

I guess Liv Warfield hipped him to the situation since she's from Portland.

I used to live in Portland.... well..... Gresham, actually.

Yeah Militant, she's a Portland, OR girl. She joined him on stage during these shows and tore it up and I'm sure she let him know whats up in NE Portland and SE Portland where the underfunded schools reside. It was a really cool thing to back up her home town like that!

She's a fantastic vocalist! You should check out her solo album if you haven't already.

BTW, I don't know if it's one of the underfunded schools that you mentioned, but my ex-wife went to high school in NE Portland, Grant High School.

Great news! Lived in Portland for several years, miss it a lot.

.

Aftershow at the Roseland in 2002 was fun (the "Peach" recording from 'It Ain't Over'), as was the Jam of the Year tour at the Rose Garden.

the man is far more generous and giving to the underserved/underprivileged than most realize because the things he (or his charity) does in that regard are usually not publicized. U know, actual giving, not for show.

You mean Prince wasn't desperately trying to let it be known that he can do something for charity, so hungry that he is for any publicity? Princey's not always, always all about the money? Weird!

Ok I gotta say it. I completely agree with mrgone777 and the OP of this thread. It is well known that Prince does many events for Charity and he does it under the radar. Other people often bring it to light after the fact. But I gotta say this. I have my favortie posters on this site. And Aerogram you are definitely the funniest and my favortite poster. I almost agree with everything you say.

Yeah, I do. Haven't been to PDX in 4 years now. I was meant to move there permanently with my ex-wife, but we got divorced. I don't miss her anymore, but I miss the city.

Gresham gets a bit of a bad rep, as there's a bit of a meth problem in some parts. But I found the town centre quite bohemian and charming, with nice local business, cafes, etc. And the MAX is conveniently located, it's easy to get downtown.

I miss Oregon in general, really. I don't have a reason to go to Portland anymore, but I have a cousin in Eugene who I'd like to try and visit this year or next.

cool! Yeah that meth problem has only got worse what with the free treatment and abundant hostels for homeless youth etc. I feel you on the ex situation, sorry that went down. So its cool that you will get all my Portland references from here on out! For example, I'm gonna see George Clinton and Funkadelic next week at the Crystal Ballroom!
