I heard there'll be a purple and gold coloured vinyl limited edition 12" pressing of Purple & Gold.

Didnt you know? Prince has retired from giving us mere mortals any new music or live shows. He has joined the celebrity circuit with high-end and expensive private shows. So expect a hush hush gig that day with orders to the free press not to report on it. The Org will obligue and delete any thread related to the gig. Expect the bootleg 24 hours later.

Why do a 180g release in inferior material (colored vinyl isn't as good as regular one, AFAIK)?

^ I have no idea about what you are talking about, Bart. wink

I just know I love black and also the coulered vinyls - and I own a lot.

Still playing vinyls everyday. And the deluxe vinyls in 180 grams are delicious, imo. smile

The colour of the vinly does not affect the sound.... that's: afaik.

Maybe you are talking about the picture disc releases, these are indeed with lower sound quality.

Reasen for me to suggest that Prince should release a vinyl on Record Stor Day, is many other artists are releasing a vinyl this date... and Metallica even a cassette tape... yeah I have read so...

Personnally I need to buy the record on white vinyl from Ultravox "Quartet", a great pop-rock vinyl from the early 80's. And remastered, if I remember right this is released on Record Store Day... smile

I guess the real answer is "it depends". Biggest problem seems to be the limited numbers.

.

I do feel these things are usually marketing gimmicks, hence there being less attention to the actual quality of the product. You aren't supposed to play that limited edition, you're supposed to pay big bucks for it. wink

And to answer the original question, what would be realy cool, would be a one-off limited edition single of a song, a new song, + b-side that isn't available anywhere else and that isn't going to be on any album, in other words, something like Screwdriver + b-side.

Exclusive? Limited in quanity & available only for day? Or in other words, what countless other major artists have done for years now. Something that could generate even a small amount of buzz among audiophiles & fans & maybe actually even be listenable? Yes, it's a marketing ploy, but given the diversity of artists who have taken advantage of it over the years, Prince is once again just showing what a marketing genius he is not by ignoring the opportunity.

My experience has been that colored vinyl is just as good as black vinyl. My band did some records pressed in multiple colors & we were curious to see if we could detect any sound difference, we couldn't. Those were color pressings made off the same cutting master as the black ones.

However it could be the case that the people producing limited edition "gimmick" pressings are not paying as much attention to quality control on the masters and test pressings.

Just like analog v digital debates, it's more likely going to be the human being in charge of production who gives a good or bad result, than the analog vs digital medium.

^ well, I know I love the 180 grams deluxe vinyl format. cool wink

And, a 180 grams record never gets scewed, warped like the normal 140 grams LP can be at times.

Well, for artists that do know how to market their work, offer special treats to their fans & collectors & take advantage of this fun event celebrating independent record stores, it looks like we'll know what's going to be available on Tuesday.
