Who would've thought Nile Rodgers would be more relevant than Prince in 2015?

Who'd have figured? On the eve of the first new Chic single in 20 years and after the massive success of his collaboration with Daft Punk, it leads me to wonder, how is it that Nile Rodgers can manage to write a hit and get commercial radio to play his music and Prince can't? Same deal with Santana in the early 00's.

Don't tell me Prince doesn't want one, because releases like AOA and MPLSoUND tell a different story.

Easy to explain. The difference between Nile Rodgers and Santana and Prince is that Prince does not do the things that will help get his new music played on the radio. Prince has an adversarial relationship with the music industry-from record company executives, radio program directors and insiders. Prince still gripes publicly about master recordings and changing the gatekeepers of the industry. Because of his hard line stance, Prince is unwilling to give a piece of his action to folks to help him reach the success you're talking about. Those people are managers, A&R people (few of them that are left). Unlike Prince, Rodgers and Santana are willing and able to adapt to the business practices of the industry-release their music to the public via today's technological advances to expose their music to the widest audience as possible. You're right that Art Offical Age and MPLSoUND are records that musically could compete with what is sold in the marketplace but if Prince is unwilling to fully exploit the same opportunities to make his music sell as Rodgers and Santana, then each album Prince releases will commercially taper off after a few weeks on the charts.

Since Prince is a flop and most have already forgotten everything about him... actually most others are more relevant. Just how low were the sales of Plectrum and AOA?

A little sad.. sad

And I don't think that is gonna change, Prince's album sales are nowhere satisfying.

Nile Rodgers has always been around in some fashion, he was involved quite alot with alot of House producers over the years too.

The main difference is, Nile Wants to be relevant and has worked hard to be, his sound is something that appeals quite well to young and old and works extremely well at Festivals that he has been doing over the past few years and he has fully earnt the current exposure he is getting. He does the Tv thing, he'll work alongside other producers and does plenty for the industry.

Prince almost doesnt want to be in the main domain again, no tv apperances outside of the US to peform. no proper tour (aside from Hit & Run) no proper promotion for his Albums, he isnt bothered that he isnt relevant.

If he hit the festival circuit hard for a couple years he would be massive as he'd be putting himself out to alot of people who may otherwise not have gone to one of his shows and probabaly left as fans.

No one has forgotten him, he gets a standing ovation every time he walks into a room. If people aren't willing to take the plunge and go through his discography they're the ones missing out imho.

Problem is, these people who give him a standing ovation when he walks into a room are only a small proportion, I wonder how many of them own any of his records?

Well, I would rather be an idiot then get into another pointless topic, do we really need to go into this? What do you want, a list of why prince is just as relevant as Rogers? It will just cause arguments.

Must be the reason he tortures them with the music he sends them. He is going for the jugular.

I love Nile, but I don't think the radio is really playing the new Chic song, either.

Nile had great success by being part of a song with a huge marketing budget behind it.

Prince could do the same thing, if he wanted. And his alleged new collaboration with Rihanna might wind up being exactly that.

It's apples and oranges, really. Chic have never sold huge amounts of records since the late 70's, and ever since then Nile's success has almost exclusively come from producing other artists (like Madonna and Duran Duran). He's more of a producer than an artist.

Prince is the opposite - although he does produce for others, his own artistry is his main thing, and while he doesn't sell astronomical numbers these days, he doesn't need to, because he's taking a bigger cut of the pie than he used to, and he makes a crazy amount of money in touring.

Anyway, if people want some more pop relevance from Prince, then collaborations with Rita Ora and Rihanna will certainly make that happen. If either song is a hit (and most Rihanna songs are) then you'll see a lot more artists requesting production/songwriting from him.

I think this is likely going to happen, if you listen the production on something like "Shut This Down", it's hugely contemporary, the same with the snippet of the Rita song that was played on the livestream.

The various artists Nile has produced is pretty eclectic, including some huge respected artists. Diana Ross, Bowie, Duran Duran & Madonna. AND those albums actually sold too.

Prince has also produced some people.

The last album he did for Bowie wasn't good at all though. That was a period I almost gave up on David. Rodgers in the 70's and 80's had hands of gold as a producer. After that it took many many years before he did something that was really top notch (IMO).

Change it one more time..
