Yeah. The updates aren't as frequent anymore, but...

.

First, I know that for lots of you the tickets and soundcheck availabilty are what mattered. I didn't go to a show during that period (OR EVER), so I've got to evaluate the experience based on what membership got me as far as material. And I have to remember how bloody long it took to get anything on my ridiculously slow dial-up connection back then. I had to go with lower quality downloads, and even then it was sometimes hours (literally). Okay.

.

I loved the first year. It took a while for them to come through with the goods the second year... especially since I didn't get the One Nite Alone piano album until it came with my One Nite Alone... Live! Getting Xpectation was a nice little surprise, but the way the C-Note links were scattered among different regions instead of just given to everybody was annoying (yes, thanks to the network of fans I had the thing all then same day, but it was still stupid). So the bloom was a bit off the rose by then. By the third year... well, the less said about that, probably the better. And I know we did the lifetime membership thing after that, but I don't remember anything really happening with that at all. The whole Musicology store was available to the public, wasn't it? Were things like the VIP room and stuff member-exclusive? That wasn't much.

.

Why didn't he just keep the store open and use that as a sales platform moving forward? I wasn't surprised when the Club died, but I still don't get why he didn't keep the basic retail thing going.

And as I understand the music released in the Ahdio shows were mostely old songs, we owned those songs already, right?

Yeah, but there were some gems scattered amongst it all such as outtakes, live stuff and new stuff. But it was the way it was put together. It was almost like getting a new album every month. I would download each show, burn it to disc and play it on the cd player. Because I never knew what I was going to get and how it was to be put together, it was a new and exciting listening experience. Sure, it didnt have the staying power of a new album but that was ok, there would be a new one next month.

I especially liked the sombre/spiritual show after 9/11. Very nice. In fact, I need to hunt that one down.....

Add to all that the live boxset, ONA piano, several new songs each month and TRC via download included in the price. We really were spoiled. The forums were wank however and full of KCOOLs and the like and moderated by what I can only describe as weirdos with a Prince fettish.

All in all, it was a great year. Year 2 was less so and by the time year 3 came along it was obvious Prince had lost complete interest in it. Come on Prince, the internet aint dead... Bring back the club, please.

We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.
