Do you miss the NPG Music Club?

I am not ashamed that I reminisce about it from time to time like it was an old girlfriend who somehow got away too soon. I think if the possibilities if we had made it long term. I think back to the good times that she made me feel good. lol

Absolutely! It was a great and new experience (at that time) and made me feel like he was really trying to give back to his loyal fans who stuck around.

I never joined because I had no money and went to Paisley Park all the time anyway, but I do really miss my friends sending me all the NPGMC material for free!

Year 1 was mindblowing, we got more or less an album's worth of new content each month for a year, one of my best year as a Prince fan! I really thought it could go on like this forever and I was so diappointed when it turned into something less exciting as early as year 2.

Hs best online effort. Would be great to have it back, but that's very doubtful as it most likely didn't bring in enough money.

I nver expected the content to go on forever. Even Prince would have to run out of outtakes and vault material at that rate. Unless he started releasing live performances through the club site, it had to end. That is why I downloaded everything the minute it was available. I did dream of the latest concerts or aftershow being released for NPGMC.

I saw the most amazing concert of my life (ONA, April, 2002 in Lakeland, Florida) and as a result of the NPGMC I not only saw the soundcheck (where he played a full, crunchy guitar laden version of Paisley Park among others), but I was in the second row, right in front of Prince for the whole show. And I got to sing into his mic, he made a witty insult, and it's all on bootleg. One of the highlights of my life. So, yeah, of course I miss that!!

As far as the fact that the music was always late and less than was promised, no, I don't miss that. And keep in mind that there were 2 very different versions of the NPGMC - the one I'm talking about (years one and two) that started in 2000 or 2001 (I forget right now, but I'm thinking February of 2001?), and the "revamped" one in 2003 or so. While the second iteration had lots of music for sale (which I stupidly bought), it was all DRM WMA files and none of them play anymore, so that was a total scam. And while the first one had a silly chat room that I never went into, the second one had that god-awful message board with the PPx moderators, and that was when I realized what a sad little control freak Prince was (not to mention a homophobic one). Just my opinion in terms of that last sentence, but that's what that message board made me feel. So no, I don't miss that!

he really screwed the pooch there...he could of set up an itunes system there for fans download all the music he wanted/wouldn't release and the MF'er would of gotten PAID in full! But typical Prince...anything the fans enjoyed...he took out his purple cock and fucked his fans!

A lot of nonsense involved in the whole thing - but that ticket / soundcheck access and the unreleased tracks were pretty much priceless....

This era was incredible, getting those long club shows with new songs and skits and the VIP seating and sound check invites. The NPG Music Club was awesome! The original one back in 2001.

great stuff!

Oh yeah. People can moan and whinge about the org all you like, but the forum there? It was like being forced into a Kingdom Hall or a mad cult.

It worked for concert tickets and soundchecks, but that whole era was too over the top with the JW doctrine, 'The ways of the pharoahs' statements and other such bullshit and just plain average music with horrible bitrates.

So no, i don't miss it.

I couldn't afford to sign up back then (student) but would loved to have had all that music.

As a side question; any one know how many copies of Rave In2 (both 1st miss press & 2nd corrected) and One nite alone exist?

They both go for high prices (and rarely) appear, but were free (correct?) as part of the club.

Agreed, the actual quality of the content (the new material) was awful for the bigger part.

I thought it was a fantastic enterprise and may well have pulled me back into the Prince fold. After Emmancipation, NPS and Rave I was teetering on the edge of I-coulnt-care-less-anymoreness. The the website came along and I was reenergised. And once TRC came out I was well and truly back on board. Then came the soundchecks and ONA tickets for a couple of London shows, life with Prince was good again.

Of course, it then all ended. Just like that. I was pretty gutted. Especially after hearing Musicology. The slide back down towards I-coulnt-care-less-anymoreness began again. Its been pretty up and down since then with nothing that really stands out except AOA and maybe 3121. Now would be the perfect time to come up with the NPGMC Rebooted, v3.0.

Thought it was a great idea.

Sadly I managed to lose my copies - missing them all in particular for Madrid 2 Chicago and Breathe.

Can anyone tell me which bootlegs I should look out for to replace my collection? Obviously NOT where to get them.....

Hell yes I miss it! It was a great outlet for his music that he could put out right as he finished it. Even in the second year when he had the rare albums up on the website to purchase. It would be great if he brought it back for a third year of downloads. Then open up a music store with all the albums that aren't available on Itunes and Google Play. It would be nice to get The Gold Experience or say Crystal Ball again since they aren't available anywhere else at a decent price.
