Proof positive that simplicity is not to be overrated. This one is a true gem that demands full release, not jus the 1:50 snippet. It almost has a carribean vibe to it the way it's sung, with it's three note bassline and repeated tone in the way Prince sings the lyrics. Speakng of which, this is the best I can make out:

You know the kind, the type of song that you typically overlook then suddenly start to listen to, only to find it stuck in your ear and slowly becomming a favorite. The last song to have that type of effect on my was 'Baby Go Go'. Well, this is indeed one of those....the worst part about the snippet? It fades just as the guitar solo starts to kick in....DAMMIT!!!!!!

This is great, but the snippets are so frustrating. The most being Cosmic Day, you can hear it start to change direction as it fades on the slightly longer snippet.
If only Prince would open up the Vault. I would be willing to pay top dollar for this stuff. | |

I'm with you on that, always loved that song, sounds even better with Prince's vocals.
As does I guess I'm crazy. I never really cared to much for it but since hearing the Prince version I've found a new appreciation for the song.

In regards to "If It'll Make U Happy". "If It'll Make U Happy". That songs really sublime in a way. Its pretty much a reggae type version of "How Come U Don't Call Me", the drum track is very 81/82 era Stewart Copeland of the Police. I would have to say thats one of the strongest outtakes that people aren't really aware of. Whats interesting is that the recording date for "If it'll Make" is from April 6 and "How Come U Don't Call Me Anymore" was recorded April 26. Thematically I think both songs are the same and both have the theme of reaching his girl thru the telephone. So its possible that Prince just refined the idea of "If It'll Make Ya" and decided to go with "How Come". | |

The version of An Honest Man on Crstal Ball is but a whisper of the track I love (no offense intended). I was referencing the 3:38 minute live performance that is more of a piano ballad. When Eric breaks in with his saxophone solo, its just bliss. I just wish that version could get cleaned up a wee bit more. Such a great post! Some of my all time favorites are electric intercourse, train, player, all my dreams, empty room, all day all night, possessed, extra lovable, desire (with prince on lead vocal), and noon rendevous (always loved this from the birthday show...thanks for turning me on to the rehearsal!!!).
I had a question I am hoping is OK to ask. I have never heard "If it'll make u happy" and I am not sure where to find it...can anyone give me some direction? Thanks.....

Here's my initial collection for car listening and what not, thanks SO MUCH for all the suggestions. I tried to at least listen to everything recommended, tended to skip ones that were particularly low quality in the version I have. I still have another disc's worth that I will go through & arrange later, and looking at this thread again, there's lots of titles I don't remember, so I have more work to do. But for now, I have two nearly-full discs of truly good to great material.

I included Movie Star and Sexual Suicide even though they are on Crystal Ball, because I don't have it, and anyway these are the "outtake versions", I assume there is some key difference from the released versions. And those songs are incredible.
Random observations: Wonderful Ass sounds like he's been listening to "The Fez" by Steely Dan. Purple Music is SO great... the repetition is so relentless that when the middle 8 comes in it's a huge surprise. All Day All Night from the 6-7-84 show is much better than the studio outtake - the new lead line and counter melody don't work as well as the sparse, grinding track on the live version. Movie Star makes me wish he had done more comedic tracks... such a great character portrait, both the way the guy sees himself and the way his conquests do. Love that Cat... "What?
