I think Prince is cool You know what
- the man still releases music when he wishes, to terms he wishes
- ignores commercial opportunities - because his heart is not there (PR 30 year remaster, bootleg series)
- plays with a group of female musicians touring small venues, doing some rather non-commercial, weird garage music - because he feels fresh with them
- chooses other musicians as "protegees" even if projects don't get released / have no commercial appeal
- remains gibberish about what new technology could mean
- dresses in a way he goddam pleases
- takes in some money every once in a while doing "greatest hits shows" - and still showing great musicianship while playing the umpteenth version of Purple Rain
- Generally seems not to care too much of what other people would expect of them
I would summarize all of the above by saying that Prince is one cool dude, rocking his own mojo |

Any artist who can go to the Grammy's saying: "Albums...remember those? Like books and black lives, albums matter", while at the same time completely ignoring that he just made two new albums himself while sporting a wig and wearing an orange suit that even the craziest Dutch football (soccer) fan wouldn't wear in his wildest dreams, is either super-mega-cool or a total fruitcake. Take your pick. [Edited 2/19/15 11:14am] |

Totally commited to marching to the beat of his own drum. Right or wrong, it's pretty admiral, actually.

Prince is the only extant musician whose mystique is warranted. He is tre cool; when God was handing out talent for those who would be recording artists and performers, Prince got his, and went back in line seconds.
But on an inter-personal level, he's not so cool that I would want to kick it with him. I've no patience for mercurialness outside of my own and I would end up punching Nelson in the face. |

Prince is cool. Genuinly cool and that's rare. I got two sides... and they're both friends. |

These are some of his most aggravating aspects, too.
Hes cool in the way he dares to straddle the fine line between super cool & embarrassing himself.

He's not as cool as David Bowie, but he's cooler than David Cameron. Most people fall somewhere on that scale. |

Yes he is cool. Doesn't see himself through other people's perceptions. It's all about the music. [Edited 2/21/15 8:28am]

I agree with the sentiment, but they work both for and against him in equal measure since every silver lining will have its cloud:
- the man still releases music when he wishes, to terms he wishes (this is also a curse as well as a blessing)
- ignores commercial opportunities - because his heart is not there (PR 30 year remaster, bootleg series) (this is a shame)
- plays with a group of female musicians touring small venues, doing some rather non-commercial, weird garage music - because he feels fresh with them (very commendable and the experience has reinvigorated him)
- chooses other musicians as "protegees" even if projects don't get released / have no commercial appeal (if quality is maintained, this too is good)
- remains gibberish about what new technology could mean (commendable about having tried the club, but a lost opportunity having a love/hate relationship with Twitter and the internet)
- dresses in a way he goddam pleases (also a curse - ref Grammy awards)
- takes in some money every once in a while doing "greatest hits shows" - and still showing great musicianship while playing the umpteenth version of Purple Rain (commended)
- Generally seems not to care too much of what other people would expect of them (commended, but could have a far greater chart impact because he should care how musically relevant he remains - see point #3)
