Who else could have made When Doves Cry?
Like Prince did?
The way he put it together, is sublime. It's not just the bass that is left out. Because one could say that the kick drum is the bass. It's the Lyrics that go along with the music like Einstein goes with science. It's the entire composition, arrangement and performance of it that was put to record. Just out of there!
But he can also kick it live. I remember SOTT and Lovesexy live. And oh the Nude tour version. Nobody can bring it like Prince can. The beats, the singing and playing, the soul....
and nothing ANY OTHER artists, songwriter and/or performer could have ever done. But Prince Is that too much credit to give him, or is it justified?

It's classic Prince, so no one really, but maybe (in no particular order)....
Bearing in mind when it came out and who was popular then:
Thompson Twins Billy Idol Human League Gary Numan Devo LOL
Hmm, I guess it sounds more european in some respects but back then, europe in general was big on hi NRG dance cuts which "When doves cry" sounds nothing like. More new wavey I guess?
Great song. Never liked it live though and goes on abit too long. But yes I can't really think of anyone. Never heard a cover of it either?

No idea. But certainly no one could perform it like he did in that Live From Japan clip. Funky!

I'd love to see him cover the song, but I don't see him come up with A wdc: a pop song that is both accessible and sort of experimental, that launches a vibe you haven't really heard before.
Maybe if Sly Stone was in top shape in the 80s and really went for something new.

Well good thing he wouldn't sing that since those are not the lyrics. [Edited 2/3/15 22:49pm] Everybody stop on the 1...GOOD GOD! Uhh!

This is what "My Org" say in regards to the forum rules: 'You agreed to the forum rules on 2004-02-16 23:06:10.' That's February 16, 2004. In that period of almost 11 years, i done read many a crazy scenAnces on this here website. Yet somehow, it is the sentence quoted above, which is the craziest. And KCool done said A LOT of shit... Maybe if Sly Stone was in top shape in the 80s and really went for something new. I have a feeling that's a joke, much as I love D I very much doubt he has it in him to write something that is both an uber catchy pop song that tops the charts, while also being experimental and dark at the same time. Heavenly wine and roses seems to whisper to me when you smile...

^no joke from KingSausage
With all due respect to D'angelo and his talents: Maybe he could come up with the lyrics, but he can't make up a beat like that, nor sing like that, let alone play the guitar like that.
Some other replies are meant as jokes, which I guess only seems to confirm my position that NOBODY could have made WDC like Prince has. And as far as the early 80's 'new wave' artists go: I guess they could have come up with a beat like that on WDC, but not the singing, nor the lyrics.

Justin Timberlake.
Sad, but true.
And I bet he'd kick arse with it!! The public is squeezin' you kiddo. You'd better kick ass on your next album or else!

ah yeah but who'd he be writing it with? He sure as hell wouldn't be writing, recording and producing it all himself. (nevermind playing it)

Now that I think about it, there i one guy that could probably pull off a song like this: Tonex currently known as B.Slade. FOOLS multiply when WISE Men & Women are silent.

Bowie is awesome, but he cannot sing like Prince does on WDC. He could come up with the melody and quirky arrangement of it. But not the beat, nor the lyrics.

Bowie is my top favorite, right alongside Prince. But he couldn't do When Doves Cry. "Drop that stereo before I blow your Goddamn nuts off, asshole!"

I've always thought WDC was shit when he does it live. Alright, not shit but underwhelming. Same with 'Kiss' too.
It's one of his very best recorded songs though no doubt.
It's kind of a silly question. You could pose this question about any big acts signature song that sold millions or was the biggest selling song of the year. Of course it's unique to them.
It's like saying who else could've painted the Mona lisa? Plenty could, but the original vision is what counts.
