this is senseless, by the same token I can point out that Prince could never make Stairway To Heaven, which is true.

i get where you want this to go but truly the only unique aspect of the song, for me, is his vocal arrangement, other than that it's quite simple and pedestrian. the vocal style is great and unique, but frankly i skip over it when listening to PR, i know it too well, but 3 Chains O' Gold is worth more for a musical discussion.

also, the no bassline thing never struck me as being groundbreaking, it just is what it is, absent, doesn't make one a pioneer and frankly wouldn't amekany differenceto the track if it were included, so, it's sort of overhyped, like the liner notes stating P plays 26 instruments, since when did handclaps, finger cymbals and triangles count as someting skilled?

Therefore, much like this website, every thing the man does gets amplified by twenty and mythologized to the levels of absurdity, like him being half Italian and supposedly plaing the harp! Get an effin' life.........

I can't see wacko Jacko singing "dig if u will my body." It would be so wrong. And creepy.

Well good thing he wouldn't sing that since those are not the lyrics.

Like Prince did?

The way he put it together, is sublime.

It's not just the bass that is left out. Because one could say that the kick drum is the bass.

It's the Lyrics that go along with the music like Einstein goes with science.

It's the entire composition, arrangement and performance of it that was put to record.

Just out of there!

But he can also kick it live. I remember SOTT and Lovesexy live. And oh the Nude tour version. Nobody can bring it like Prince can. The beats, the singing and playing, the soul....

Yeah, When Doves Cry is truly Awesome

and nothing ANY OTHER artists, songwriter and/or performer could have ever done.

But Prince

Is that too much credit to give him, or is it justified?

.

[Edited 2/2/15 16:52pm]

I've always thought WDC was shit when he does it live. Alright, not shit but underwhelming. Same with 'Kiss' too.

It's one of his very best recorded songs though no doubt.

It's kind of a silly question. You could pose this question about any big acts signature song that sold millions or was the biggest selling song of the year. Of course it's unique to them.

It's like saying who else could've painted the Mona lisa? Plenty could, but the original vision is what counts.

You don't even like the Nude tour version?

I think there are countless of songs that sold millions, plenty of others could have made. So many 'hits' are not 'unique' at all, but simply rip-offs of other songs, and usually very simply produced.

There are plenty of Prince songs too others could have made. But When doves cry is not like that.

The no bass line btw was groundbreaking back in the day. It still makes the song sound entirely different than other, more 'standard' tunes.

The Nude tour version proves it too, because there is bass in that. An amazing bassline that is. And it makes the song sound and feel very different.

Is the Nude Tour version the one from Japan with the funky guitar lick and awesome piano solo?

Who says he can't perform this song live?

As far as live, no one could come close to really matching Prince.

As far as in the studio the only person who really comes to mind to match the moodiness and production is Phil Collins. I think "In the Air Tonight" is all the evidence I need for this particular view.

Maybe...just maybe Depeche mode might have pulled of a solid version based on some of their darker work but they don't capture the pure grit of "WDC" or "In the air tonight."

That's a pretty harsh response....but funny(ish).

I think the songs "When Doves Cry" and "In the Air Tonight" have enough similarities to make my case: the sparse production, the gritty nature of the performances, the compelling use of the linn drum machine, the layered vocals. Neither song sounds like anything else that was released at the time they were out. I'm not suggesting they are the same genre or comparing the overall artistry of Prince Or Collins, though I would say that Collins is one of the few artists who experimented with what pop music could sound like to a similar extent as Prince.

It is easy to knock collins because of the easy listening crap he started cranking out in the Disney phases of his caree, but that doesn't change the fact that he put out a song like "In the Air tonight" in 1981.

Just two more cents to throw on top of the two cents I threw in earlier...

"Jesus hairy fucking balls..." almost funny enough to not seem juvenille and rude.

Now that you mention that scene tho', I remember again how much Prince really put me off with that. I was only young and still into Michael Jackson and Madonna, but I was also interested in Prince.

But then he came up to you like this, I mean please dude, no I don't want to bath with you!! shake

I think your argument has a leg to stand on. In the way that they both produced 'unique' hit songs, with a kind of an eery-like production and arrangement that others never came up with.

One cannot forget that Collins was part of Genesis for some time. Thinking about them, I would assert that 'Mama' would be an even better candidate to match with When Doves Cry.

It's similar in its eeriness and unique sound, coupled to a simple, catchy and repetetive melody, but also very personal lyrics about mothers and emotional vocals.

The lyrics seem to stem from the same kind of emotions that Prince is trying to express on WDC:

Mama Lyrics

I can't see you mama
But I know you're always there
Ooh to touch and to feel you mama
Oh I just can't keep away
It's the heat and the steam of the city
Oh its got me running and I just can't brake
So say you'll help me mama
Cause its getting so hard

Now I can't keep you mama
But I know you're always there
You listen, you teach me mama
And I know inside you care
So get down, down here beside me
Oh you ain't going nowhere
No I won't hurt you mama
But its getting so hard

Can't you see me mama
Mama mama mama please
Can't you feel my heart
Can't you feel my heart
Can't you feel my heart ooh
Listen to me mama
Mama mama
You're taking away any last chances
Don't take it away
Can't you feel my heart?..

It's hot, too hot for me mama
But I can't hardly wait
My eyes they're burning mama
Make the pain, make it go away
No I won't hurt you mama
But its getting so hard

Now I can't see you mama
But I know you're always there
You taunt, you tease me mama
But I never, never can keep away
It's the heat and the steam of the city

I think you are right about "Mama" making a good comparison as well. I think I leaned toward "In the Air" because of the presence of the drum machine but as far as mood and vocals, "Mama" is probalby a better comparison.

I just have to.

Patrick Bateman: Do you like Phil Collins? I've been a big Genesis fan ever since the release of their 1980 album, Duke. Before that, I really didn't understand any of their work. Too artsy, too intellectual. It was on Duke where Phil Collins' presence became more apparent. I think Invisible Touch was the group's undisputed masterpiece. It's an epic meditation on intangibility. At the same time, it deepens and enriches the meaning of the preceding three albums. Christy, take off your robe. Listen to the brilliant ensemble playing of Banks, Collins and Rutherford. You can practically hear every nuance of every instrument. Sabrina, remove your dress. In terms of lyrical craftsmanship, the sheer songwriting, this album hits a new peak of professionalism. Sabrina, why don't you, uh, dance a little. Take the lyrics to Land of Confusion. In this song, Phil Collins addresses the problems of abusive political authority. In Too Deep is the most moving pop song of the 1980s, about monogamy and commitment. The song is extremely uplifting. Their lyrics are as positive and affirmative as anything I've heard in rock. Christy, get down on your knees so Sabrina can see your asshole. Phil Collins' solo career seems to be more commercial and therefore more satisfying, in a narrower way. Especially songs like In the Air Tonight and Against All Odds. Sabrina, don't just stare at it, eat it. But I also think Phil Collins works best within the confines of the group, than as a solo artist, and I stress the word artist. This is Sussudio, a great, great song, a personal favorite.
