For shits and giggles... Thriller vs. Purple Rain track for track... Two seminal 9-track albums from the biggest stars of the eighties.
Wanna Be Startin Somethin vs. Let's Go Crazy - Wanna Be Startin Somethin Both rousing and anthemic openers, but WBSS sounds funkier and has aged better. Also additional points for coining the phrase "mama say mama sa ma mon coo sa." Baby Be Mine vs. Take Me With U - Take Me With U Not the strongest track on either album, Baby Be Mine sounds a bit twee in comparison to Take Me With U. The Beautiful Ones vs. The Girl Is Mine - The Beautiful Ones The worst track on Thriller vs the best on Purple Rain. No contest with this one. Thriller vs. Computer Blue - Thriller Both solid tracks, but Thriller edges it out. Beat It vs. Darling Nikki - Beat It Both the edgiest song on their respective albums and both brilliant rock tracks. But Beat It has one of the greatest guitar solos of all time so MJ wins this one for me. Billie Jean vs. When Doves Cry - Billie Jean The hardest choice to make. Both centrepieces of their respective albums and two of the greatest pop songs ever written. I feel time has been kinder to Billie Jean. The production values on Doves sound very of its time, whereas BJ sounds timeless. Human Nature vs. I Would Die 4 U - Human Nature Both great tracks, but I prefer HN. P.Y.T. (Pretty Young Thing vs. Baby I'm A Star - Baby I'm A Star Two fun, fairly throwaway pop songs, Baby I'm A Star doesn't feature the Chipmunks. Lady In My Life vs. Purple Rain - Purple Rain No contest. Purple Rain every time. So all in all, that's five for Thriller and four for Purple Rain. [Edited 1/30/15 2:18am] | |

Comparing them sequentially is insane.
There's only two songs on Thriller that are worthy of the best material on Purple Rain: Beat It and Billiie Jean.
Wanna be Starting Something and Thriller are I Would Die 4 You/Baby I'm a Star-worthy (considering these were the "easy ones" for Prince, Jackson's "easy dancey ones" are perhaps better produced, not sure if they are actually better songs).
This is silly, both albums are great, Purple Rain just happens to be a way more personal statement, which makes it better art in my world. | |

This is silly, both albums are great, Purple Rain just happens to be a way more personal statement, which makes it better art in my world. I actually think rating them side by side sequentially works surprisingly well. They both have instantly recognisable opening tracks, kind of throway tracks 2 and 8, mid-tempo track 3, the rock number at track 5, their most famous hit at track 6. I would say PR has three real masterpieces (Doves, The Beautiful Ones and title track) and Thriller has two (Beat It and Billie Jean). But I would argue that songs like Startin Somethin, Human Nature and Thriller are stronger than the likes of Computer Blue, I Would Die 4 U and Let's Go Crazy. [Edited 1/30/15 3:30am] | |

And yet MJ has slim to no "real" B-sides to go toe-to-toe with Prince, so:
17 days beats Can't Get Outta the Rain Erotic City beats It's the Falling In Love/Can't Get Out of The Rain Another Lonely Christmas beats Get On The Dance Floor GOD (Love Theme from Purple Rain) beats Rock With You (Live) GOD (vocal) beats Baby Be Mine Baby I'm Star* versus Workin' Day and Night (Yet another Off the Wall rehash - sigh) - win goes to the fresher material
In my mind, you cannot omit the B-sides unless you are a MJ fan in which case, you kinda want to ignore that Michael phoned in his B-sides unlike Prince.

But the best songs (Billie Jean, Startin Somethin, Beat It) have aged better than anything on Purple Rain. People still go crazy for those songs, not so much for PR or Doves, unless you're at a Prince concert. Thriller too has been sampled and covered by loads of artists ranging from Rhianna, SWV, Chris Brown to rock/indie bands like Fall Out Boy, Chris Cornell and Bumblefoot. [Edited 1/30/15 4:30am] | |

Just trying to add some levity. Sorry! I thought your track-by-track approach was interesting. I never realized how similarly structured both albums' sequencing is. It makes it a different contest than a simple album-to-album comparison. I love Thriller, and it's one of the greatest pop albums ever. EVER. But Purple Rain is so much more than a pop album. It has creative experimentation and artistic depth that blows Thriller away. Again, I love Thriller. But Purple Rain is the kind of album that should be put on satellites and launched into deep space just so we can prove to aliens that their music is balls compared to ours. Interesting thread, but... - you're dead to me
Darling Nikki is significantly better than Beat It.
When Doves Cry is exponentially better than Billie Jean.
Otherwise, I'd take I Would Die For You over Human Nature any day of the week, and maybe, I don't know, possibly PYT over Baby I'm A Star, but not so emphatically that you would be dead to me for choosing the other.

My two favorite artists, but I can't get with a sequential comparison for the primary reason that Purple Rain is the soundtrack to a movie and Thriller isn't. Meaning, the sequence of Purple Rain was for the most part defined by the movie (of course, Purple Rain doesn't come last in the film).
So Michael chose to capitalize on the MTV crossover platform by making sure that audience heard the record he'd already released, whereas Prince had already made another one by that time. |
