I want Prince to sue Taylor Swift

Just think: When you've been getting down about the liars and the dirty, dirty cheats of the world, you could have been trademarking the phrase This Sick Beat, which Taylor Swiftjust did, at the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. It's one of a few 1989-related phrases the singer trademarked, along with "Party Like It's 1989," "'Cause We Never Go Out of Style," "Nice to Meet You. Where You Been?" and "Could Show You Incredible Things," which Swift seeks to prevent others from using on "Paper products; Printed products; Printed publications; Stationery; Stickers; Decals; Decalcomanias; [and] Removable tattoo transfers," among others. Fortunately, that weird squealing "Stay!" from"All You Had to Do Was Stay" remains in the public domain.

.

So this broad thinks she owns that phrase? "Party like its 1989" would have no revelance as a catchphrase if not for "1999".

Surely you have more important things to worry about.

the trademark really shouldn't be granted, trademarks are only supposed to be used for brands. This isn't a brand, it's simply a phrase. And she hasn't trademarked it, she's only applied for a trademark.

btw: there are already trademarks on party like it's 1999, and it's not by prince.

I sure wish you could just past a link on this site.

In the Huey Lewis song Back In Time, there's a line that says "is this the future, or 1999?", and when they say "1999" it's in the distorted deeper style like Prince's song. .

.

Did Prince sue, or was it considered a "nod" in the industry?

hahaha i just think its odd she attempts to trademark a phrase that is clearly a swipe! if he can sue folks for stealing 128kbps MP3 files surely he can sue her empire.

I fear you are imagining things. First, you got the lyrics wrong. It's "Is this the fifties or 1999?" And there is no distortion on the vocals.

Im going to trademark these questions so that they can never be asked on the org again:

When is the PR reissue coming out?

Whats with the afro?

Who should Prince fire?

And I WILL sue!

I'm pretty sure if somebody would sing or write the three words "let it be" 3 times in a row, he could be easily sued by McCartney.

So yes, I want as hell Prince to sue Taylor Swift too.

BUT, I also want Prince to be sued by WB.

V10LETBLUES

Prince once said Take This Beat, ...that he "didn't care" It seems people took him up on that offer and left him empty. As I said here before the song and album blew up, Prince used to whip up songs and beats like Shake it OFF in his sleep. Great track, shame he gave all of his beats away. And yeah Taylor, that is a sick beat.

I stand corrected on the lyrics, but listen again. That 1999 is clearly meant to invoke Prince's song.

I haven't even read OP's post, but I'm already laughing my ass off at the though of a Prince fan wanting Prince to sue Taylor Swift. biggrin OK let me see what the reasoning here is... Yep, it's funny shit. biggrin Taylor, or at least some merchandising asshole, on behalf of TS, want's to trademark the use of "Party like it's 1989" for a bunch of useless TS merch. We can't let that happen, can we? biggrin

Prince / 1999 = sings about the real paranoia we all shared in the 80s
Swift / 1989 = sings about the year she was born (aka me me me me me)

Or the future, given the subject matter of the movies is time travel. Not everything has to do with Prince. There are just background vocals in addition to Huey's. There's no distortion.

Only something like recording your child dancing to Prince's actual music and posting it on YouTube would be enough for Prince to spend money on attorneys.

Having come out only a few years after 1999 and a year after Purple Rain, I would argue that it is a direct nod to Prince's song 1999. I thought it then, still believe it now. We can agree to disagree though, that's fine.

Or you could take the purple wax out of your ears...

It was recorded in October 1984, 1999 was recorded in 1982, so "a few years?" Again, you need to check your facts. You seem to be of the sort that wants to find a Prince connection in everything, but the reality is that his impact is not quite as far reaching. Even then.

Anyway...
