Why has Prince abandoned the piano? I was listening to the beautiful, but short, Arboretum, and realized that he doesn't play the piano much these days. It's all about his guitar (not that there's anything wrong with that).
I believe if he did a stripped down piano only song, it would be a hit for him. He's great at creating a melody and, the right lyrics could put this song over the top. It seems to me that he has been trying too hard for a hit lately (Black Sweat territory), when it's almost a certainty that his next biggest seller will come from left field.
Please get back on the keys Prince.
Thanks for the laughs, arguments and overall enjoyment for the last umpteen years. It's time for me to retire from Prince.org and engage in the real world...lol. Above all, I appreciated the talent Prince. You were one of a kind.

He still plays a lot of piano live. I was 15 feet from him on the first night of Hit & Run Part 2, last year, as he performed Electric Intercourse, just him and piano..,... Truly, truly breathtaking. In terms of recorded material, tracks with just him and piano are fairly rare in the grand scheme of things. |

He's probably coming up with a concept album that has some stupid sounding woman with an accent talking about how the Trees have a spiritual connection with Auto Tune, and how talking over music is better than music itself. It will be over compressed loud, and there will not be a single note of music played without hearing the woman babble on about the spiritual significance of how time does not exist, how funky funky blue cheese is the enemy.
He first explored this on The Gold Experience with that stupid NPG operator babbling over the great horn breakdown in Billy Jack Bitch, and then the over the top old man corny "You are now an official part of the NPG" in Gold.
Talkng over music as a form of art over piano sickens me...but I would bet Prince would do it. An album of some psycho babble woman with an accent, and in the background music that you can't really hear. Sad.

Well, even Arboretum has doves in the loop, so that can't be all bad. After i thought about it, i realized that there was a recent HUGE hit that fit the bill that i'm asking from Prince. Bruno Mars' "When I Was Your Man". Prince would do it better. Thanks for the laughs, arguments and overall enjoyment for the last umpteen years. the man has hit a brick wall musically, needs to study theory and throw his funk lp's in the effin' garbage. All I read on this site is 'he could if he wanted to', or' if he did it'd be better', or even 'he's gonna surprise us he's got a plan'.
I call bravo sierra on Prince, that's BS to the layman...
he ain't got shit up his sleeve but lame material, the best material he ever created was from 84-87, beginning with 'Lemon Crush' it all starts seeping downhill.
kinda hard to claim the title genius now, he hasn't done anything of note for ages, hasn't gone any place new and doesn't work with world-class musicians who could truly challenge him. He's been making the same record for 20 yrs now. , Sting produced a Broadway show, Billy Joel wrote classical pieces for piano and Prince is the self-proclaimed historian for funk music, who gives a rat's ass about that?
He's been left behind for me, no new ideas, no way to express them, cares more for his clothing designs than his music, and his hairstyles. All you people do is talk about that effin' ugly afro, how about how poor his songs are instead?
he doesn't play the piano much on record cos he doesn't know what to play. if he's a genius where's the evidence? He should be writing symphonies and concertos, oh, that's not his style, man! If he's a genius hemakes it his style.
Point being, he can't do it, never will able to do it. He's not a genius, he's just hard working and prolific, that does not equal genius. No one in modern music is truly because how can you be genius in a musical form so simple?
Miles Davis was a genius because reinvented jazz 4 TIMES, and wby reinventing he created new styles of jazz that live on today. Prince has never done this, the MPLS sound does not count as reinventing music. No wonder Miles never went further with Prince, sure he said he like him,but c'mon, for Miles that stuff must have been like when he was in elementary school.
Can I Play With U? No you cannot...

The word genius is so overused these days. Why just the other day on this site I saw someone say it was "genius" that Van Halen called their 80's album 1984. Smart yes. Genius no. Its that kind of use of the word that has destroyed what the word "genius" defines.

Hey, why not be hard working and become a sort of Prince? Since you're an expert on geniuses, I'm sure you could give it the old college try and come up with those simple songs uneducated people seem to like.
Just... promise not to forget us lot on your way to the very top.

Who? You, of course -- I'm sure you're just here taking notes. Let us know how it goes with a little hard work and some music theory.

I imagine he still does a lot of composing on the piano. And piano/Keyboards (or midi keyboards hooked up to ProTools at least) are pretty much in most of his songs.
