Eh. nvrmind.

Listen to 80s hard rock as much as you want, but comparing that type of stuff to Prince's approach to music is just silly.

I'll just leave these two quotes here:

"Hey everyone, thanks for coming out. It's pretty amazing you all are here. Although, if were you I'd be next door seeing the greatest guitarist of all time, Prince" - Steve Vai when playing a show in Vancouver at the venue next to where Prince was playing.

Clapton thinks he's the best. Vai thinks he's the best. Random people on the internet don't. Go figure.

Milli, just watched a vid where Clapton proclaimed John Mayer a 'master' don't know what you think of him, but Clapton isn't the benchmark for rock guitar, sorry, he's a blues player, and I know he likes Prince as an all-around musician which isn't the argument here. Very generous of Vai but you truly believe that? C'mon, idol worship blinds you, I could list 30 guitarists of any style off the top of me head better than P, you ready?

you have to understand that master huitarists are generally in bands and not trying to be superstar solo artists, one reason Prince gets a lot of credit.

BoneRanger, that stuff eists, dig deep on YouTube, that's where VH bootlegs live on, yeah they did "Hollywood Shuffle" on the regular as well as some of that funky James Gang material. Eddie gets bored with repetition is the key here, that's why his music is so dynamic and Prince's music, though Ilove it, is simplistic, even those mamoth funk jams are same ol shit ad nauseum...

....

I had a boot with them doing a James Gang tune listed as "Walk Away" and, although the recording quality is quite primitive, they knock it right out of the park and "Van Halenize" it at the same time. Even David Lee Roth, who always gets slammed for singing out of key and forgetting lyrics, totally nailed it. Before they jam it Dave mentions something about another James Gang tune called something like "Funk 49" and that "maybe they'll play it later that evening," but if they did play it later that evening it wasn't on my boot.

....

You didn't know who Gary Clark Jnr was a couple of days ago. Remember you said there were no black guitarists and I named Gary Clark Jnr. Your vast knowledge seems to rely quite hevily on my knowledge. Now you're claiming he's a better guitarist than Prince who's been playing twice as long as he has? That's just not smart.

Also you can't claim Clapton's isn't a legend then use him to try and illustrate your point. That doesn't make sense mate. You immediately undermined your own point.

you have to understand that master huitarists are generally in bands and not trying to be superstar solo artists, one reason Prince gets a lot of credit.

True, part of Prince's genius is he does it all. Most rock guitarists never make it solo. Strange.

Computer Blue? I Could Never Take The Place Of Your Man? Shhh? My Love Is Forever ? really?

Those aren't really complicated at all. Good for a pop artist, but really? Those are child's play but are good within the context of Prince's world. I once heard Bon Jovi play "Purple Rain" at a sound check and Richie Sambora ripped the shit out of the solo and expounded on it without losing the feel. My point is that his stuff is pretty basic for the majority of guitarists.

OK young man, you are locked in your room with :

1 - Small Club's Just My Imagination,

2 - Witness 4 The Prosecution (Hornless)

3 - Hall of Fame's While My Guitar Gently Weeps (you'll love it, he does some tapping, ohh)

You're not allowed to come out before you dig that Prince can do this AND much more.

No way Ol'Eddie could make the rythm guitar on Controversy. Or Alphabet Street. He can rock, but he sure can't groove.
He can erupt and burp a great deal, but first take his Floyd Rose and his overdrive pedals away and then we'll have a talk.

..Not taking sides here because I love P and Eddie both. But Eddie does have that swing in his playing where P's got that groove. "Witness" and "I'm Yours" are great examples of P making the guitar scream and wail. Also Eddie used no Floyds on the 1st 2 VH records (stock Fender vibrato) and no dist/overdrive pedals..just heavy EQ from the MXR and BOSS eq pedals..OK enough guitar geek stuff..Can we say that they're both great for what they've done?

What to make of people who claim to own scores of Prince albums and singles, but come here to repeatedly explain how he is mot really that good, in fact he's np genius nad can barely play guitar or piano decently?

In this particular case, sounds like someone who just likes to put down an artist to talk authoritatively, thereby seemingly establishing some easy feeling of self-satisfaction. If I felt this way about his guitar playing, I'd be on a general guitar site saying my bit, where I'd be more likely to encounter people 8 feel worthy of my grand knowledge.

Even if Clapton and Vai are just being generous and humble here, the fact is that countless other musicians have expressed their admiration for Prince and his skills. He has the respect of his peers; the opinion of all the rest of us don't really matter.

I gotta chime in on this one: Ashy, all of your retorts to the people that are arguing your claim are all at this froum for a reason: We all LOVE Prince's music, and his musicianship. With that said, some of your replies come off as a bit pushy, like your word is Bible-truth or something when in fact the debate is all about what we like. Half of the folks on here (the forum itself, not this topic) arent fans of EVH and VH like you and I are (and trust me, I practically worship Roth-era VH. So Im not picking on you, but you're fighting a fight a lot of folks will not agree with you on simply because their Prince-ness won't allow them to.) And everybody else reading this: You aren't wrong with your opinions, either. Nobody is wrong here and nor should they be condemned for their thoughts either. Funny, the most passionate thing in the world for me is music, and everything about it is subjective which means I can never be right when in a discussion about it. So as long as everyone here knows Im not going to slam them, here is what I think: You CAN'T compare Eddie to Prince, or vice-versa. We're talking 2 totally different guitar-geniuses that treat and look at their instruments quite differently from each other. When I get asked about P's guitar playing, I've narrowed it down to this: Brilliantly sloppy with a purpose in mind, and full of soul. With Eddie: Showmanship first, passion second. I finally got to see VH a few years back, and Eddie's solo left a lot to be desired. Half of the time, the guy was cheesin' because he knows damn well the shit he was playing usually can't be duplicated. His talent is a gift, much like P's. And man, half of the charm on those first 6 VH albums is the charisma the band give off in their playing, and cocaine. Lots of cocaine razz . And alot of the guitar players I know love Eddie, but also consider him to be a master of deceit. Why you ask? Take "Eruption" for example. I'm not a guitar player, so when I hear that I think of a man clearly on some sort of PEDs playing out of his mind, but the guitar players think it's all a crock, and it's simply him just finger-tapping (Care to elaborate what that is?). Not me saying that, just going by what people who know the ways of the guitar-force have told me. And you also bring up Steve Vai, a criminally overlooked player. He's an animal for sure, but since he was classically taught and knows all the boring stuff like scales and what-not, some of his stuff comes off as devoid of soul. Same with John Petrucci, guitarist for Dream Theater, another favorite group of mine. Both can technically run circles around their peers, but stops dead in their tracks when they play something from the heart. But then you got a guy like Joe Satriani who walks both lines pretty confidently. He can shred like JP and SV, and then also bust out a solo that would make one weep over it's beauty and power like P's live stuff can do. EVH is all that and then some, but he forgets sometimes that playing comes from the heart and not from the dropped jaws in the audience. P? Well, we all love him. Thats why we're here. P can also do all of the above, his crime is that he doesn't play enough guitar on his recorded output. Most of the time, hes playing for the song itself, and only turns it up to 11 on those good occasions (Hello, "Rock Hard in a Funky Place"). But in closing, I appreciated the eerie similiarities between P and EVH, but discussing guitar players after your point is an unsolvable conversation, which is why it's always best to know the diff between oranges and apples. And speaking of early VH, if you arent familiar with the "Fair Warning" album, get on that right away. Dark, heavy, and pretty funky at times too. Thank you for making me step back and actually put some thought into this. I rarely post in this section of the forum simply because it's been rather...bland lately. Cheers from New Jersey!

Great thread bytheway. Anyway, nice to see someone bigging up Trevor Rabin as Yes fans hate him LOL. I go for the melodic guys like Rabin, Knopfler, Clapton, Graydon, Landau and other session cats like Dan Huff and Steve Lukather. Not the best at anything by any means but it's personal preferance and tone, style etc....

I know EVH is a trailblazer and much more gifted then Prince on guitar but I do prefer the little guy though LOL.

The way he lays down simple guitar parts like El Lay session legends like Huff never fails to amaze me. It's not a tricky thing to do, but he does it so well though, and thats on top of everything else he needs to do in the production booth, just showed real commitment to love. Prince's overall production and writing skills have deminished personally but he was great once and could be again but that's another story.

It's fine, if you like Eddie Van Halen, on guitar. Fast tapping the fretboard or whatever. Me, though? I haven't heard anybody do songs like Alexa de Paris, or Question of U, or Scandalous Sex Suite, or Let's Go Crazy, or Batdance(first part of song), or Dionne, or Count the Days, or Sign O' the Times, or When Doves Cry, or Darling Nikki, or 777-9311, or The Walk, or Rave Unto the Joy Fantastic(live version from Small Club Second Show that Night) or 94 East/Minneapolis Genius, or Clockin' the Jizz. I could go on and on. I've never heard a guitarist play quite the range of guitar that I've heard Prince do. That's why he's a legend. If you're a fan of Prince and you search out him on guitar, you'll never be bored.

You could list thousands of guitarists but they don't play the range and intensity that Prince plays. Not a single one of them, outside of Jimi Hendrix.

That's why Van Halen can't fuck with Prince. Not even on his best night. Van Halen to me has Jump and Eruption and that's it. Oh yeah, I forgot...Panama. But that's it.

But that's it.

again, clearly you don't know music because if you onlyknow 3 VH cuts you've been left behind, not fit for this thread, go comment on the funkster threads, you're outclassed here...

Batdance???? you're too cute...

I "only know 3 Van Halen cuts"? I've bought Women and Children and 1984 by Van Halen. I've heard Runnin with the Devil, You Really Got Me, Ain't Talkin Bout Love, Jamie's Cryin, Beautiful Girls, Dance the Night Away, Spanish Fly, Hang Em High...off of the radio.

You came to this fight with a knife...while I've got a gun. Now who do you think wins this one?

Ha!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Spanish Fly, Hot For Teacher, and Drop Dead Legs ain't bad either but Prince's intensity on guitar over his whole career smothers the shit out of Eddie.

Like I said, he couldn't fuck with Prince on his worst day!

Checkmate!

If you really know Van Halen and listen to Eddie during the Diamond Dave period, you'll find Eddie repeating the same fretboard/guitar tricks in several songs. Prince doesn't do that. Prince varies shit up on guitar every damn song. Name another artist who does that? There ain't many...and Eddie Van Halen ain't one of them.
