Prince and Neil Young

Since now first 7 Revolution-era albums are available in 192 khz in Pono Music, I really like to know more about Prince's connection and relationship with Neil Young.

Why does this indicate a relationship? The HD versions were initially made available at HDTracks and other similar sites, and now they've been made available in the Pono store.

Do you think that every artist with a presence in the Pono store has some sort of direct connection to Neil? Does that make sense?

Strive

Neil Young has an agreement with Warner Bros. No Prince involvement needed

Pono has already signed an agreement with Warner Music Group to remaster its catalog for Pono distribution.

Thanks for the laughs, arguments and overall enjoyment for the last umpteen years. It's time for me to retire from Prince.org and engage in the real world...lol. Above all, I appreciated the talent Prince. You were one of a kind.

There's a tour documentary from 1987 that circulates among Neil collectors, where he and one of his crew are talking about the show that night, talking about how tough the audience was, how they really had to give everything they had to get a rise out of people. The associate starts to say something like, "How is Prince gonna..." and Neil snaps back, "Prince is a genius!" The other guy says "Yeah I know he;s a genius but..." and Neil says "But he'd better be ready to give them everything he's got."

So other than that one statement of admiration from Neil, I don't know of any other connection. He doesn't seem to be a guy that listens to a lot of music newer than when he was in high school.

I didn't notice there are high res Prince downloads available - anyone know if they are just upsamples of the existing CD tracks or actual newly mastered for HD? (I'm guessing, not newly mastered).

Pono does sound interesting but right now I am eyeing the Fiio X1, which for $99 and a memory card, has the same playback capabilities (eg, it handles 24-bit FLAC files which is how most HDs are sold).

I'm thrilled with the better sound quality of Pono but I am very unhappy that someone can only buy music through their site to put on their music player. Where's the freedom and where's the improvement over Itunes and Ipod in that regard...

I don't think that's true. The files are simply FLAC, and can be loaded into the PONO the same way files can be added to iTunes (which also don't have to be purchased from their store to be used on your iPod).

I was always pretty weirded out by this. I mean, I know it's fairly common for two distinct songs to share the same title, but at the same time Neil Young's title is so specific I can't believe it was an accident on Prince's part. And it's not exactly an obscure album track either, it's one of Neil Young's best known songs, which makes Prince's borrowing of the title even weirder.

You can put FLAC files on your IPOD? If so, how? I ain't no techie and haven't been able to do so.

No, but you can use iTunes to rip your CDs into ALAC (Apple's lossess). What I meant earlier was that you don't have to purchase direclty from the iTunes or PONO stores to use a file on their respecitve players. As long as the files are compatable, you can use files from any source.

As of right now, Ipods cannot play FLAC files. It's not like it would be hard to make an Ipod that plays FLAC files, they just haven't done it yet. I'll bet they will within a year.

The Pono store is just one place you can buy HD downloads. Other sites include HDtracks.com. Most of them sell whatever the labels have licensed, either in 16 bit or high-res 24 bit. One thing I did notice, was the Pono store allows you to buy individual tracks for about $2.50, which HDtracks did not, for the titles I was looking at.

I haven't gotten into high res yet. It's interesting but pricey and I got other things to worry about.

Beside the 1st 7, I wonder when Prince will release more of his albums in 192khz? Will we get to hear also Crystal Ball, 20ten, those internet only albums like Xpectation, and all the out of prints in highest resolution?
