Paying for Bootlegs: An Honesty Box If Prince set up a website where you could donate if you aquired a bootleg. You don't state who you are or what you downloaded, you just pay into an 'honesty box.'
$1 for song $10 for an album $5 for a concert or aftershow or what you feel the worth of the recording is
For example, if ou download a 3rdEyeGirl show from ???, enjoy it and go pay Prince $5
Would you do it? | |

Sounds too complicated. Downloads are already anonymous (other than the payment details). No need for an amnesty, just put it up for download.

Nothing more complicated than a PayPal account

How about he just releases the fucking recordings. Then I'll pay for them. - I just paid a very large amount for a few DAT tapes of unreleased George Michael tracks. Frankly, it's his problem for not releasing them. Same with Prince. Same with Stevie. Same with Michael's Estate. Always cry 4 love, never cry 4 pain.

If he wants to beat the bootleggers at their own game he should release it all and render the bootlegs useless [Edited 1/17/15 5:01am]

That would be a massive outpouring of product, easily the largest from any artist ever. Commercially, it's not a good idea to release so much material if the supply so far exceeds the demand -- the cost of remastering all of those properly would also be exorbitant for the potential revenue he could derive.
But yeah, a nice selection would be nice.
As for the question, I don't think Prince would be very happy with that kind of Honesty donation, would feel like accepting charity or a consolation prize when he'd rather get paid formally.

With a fanbase that won't even pay for their copies of official releases... (Data-BROKE-AZZA-MAFUKKA-ATTHEBANK)... I can't imagine a bootleg honesty box generating much love for Prince.

I would take a shit in the honesty box. (e-shit?) If Prince started releasing this stuff officially, that's when he gets my money. "Drop that stereo before I blow your Goddamn nuts off, asshole!"

Screw charity, let's donate to rock stars who don't care about us!

I think the Pay What You Want model would work remarkably well for Prince, actually. His pure longevity means he has a large number of fans who are actually quite wealthy. A download set of officially released bootlegs released under a "Pay whatever you feel is fair" minimum, I actuallty think the average transaction value would be quite high.
Worked for Radiohead, Nine Inch Nails and Amanda Palmer. |

Why would he release outtakes She Believed in Fairytales and Princes, He Believed the voices coming from his stereo

Hi blue gangster I am a huge gm fan also I remember you posting on the forums before the thread got deleted on where to find unreleased gm songs to download because YouTube quality is terrible. I'm just wondering now what DAT tapes are and why you paid? are these unleaked songs in full like Stephen, maybe it's not your time, people etc. I'd love to hear these I'm feeling a bit fammy™

Are these the alternate versions available online? Eg Moody (spinning the wheel) and crazyman dance with an extra verse? If not, what are these and do you know how i can also buy some? after seeing willaefan's gm private collector instagram of a 7 second song snippet and a brief video of george in the studio making 'one day ill know' this is private collecting world seems really interesting I'm feeling a bit fammy™

I think you make a really good point. Obviously it minimizes costs and allows Prince to directly 'download your work into your friend's computer' and, of course, he has done this on small scale with some of the tracks from 3rdEyeGirl. I suppose part of the problem which is common to all artists in the modern age is that once teh file is out there it gets shared continously for free. Whilst I can't speak for anyone else, a number of Prince fans (like me) are probably, shall we say 'not absolute youngsters' and would be very happy to pay a few pounds for tracks from the great man.
It is quite starnge to me that when Kate Bush banned phones and cameras from her gigs people said that this was because she intended to sell a video of the shows later. When people heard about Prince doing the same they said he was doing it for the same reason, to which I stated that I just wished he would release the videos to the shows for anybody who could not attend or who wanted to remember their night again. They seemed quite shocked that there was no offical full-length O2 show DVD available.
That said, the one thing I will always say about Prince is that there is no shortage of material from his career available and despire wanting more, I have an amazing career that has produced more material than almost all other artists. [Edited 1/17/15 15:14pm]

You paid money for an album. The transaction of payment and product is done.
If he wishes to do this with the material you desire, that is entirely upto him, as it's his intulectual property. Always cry 4 love, never cry 4 pain.

Why? We're in an economic depression man. No dough for you.
Why not? P might find it too complicated. Will lose interest if the income goes down after the freshness wears off. P should have released that stiff lone ago. Or at least have a plan in place and communicated for them album remasters. Pills and thrills and daffodils will kill... If you don't believe me or don't get it, I don't have time to try to convince you, sorry.
