What is the most ignorant thing about Prince you have ever heard from a stranger?

I ask this, as I was on hoilday last week and met a nice female friend of my partner's. She was an older woman and quite pleasant and asked me what kind of music I liked, I said Prince. She said, oh yes I know of him, didn't he make that song Purple Beret?

.

Purple Beret!!! Like what, I had to be polite and say "Uh yeah" and hopefully change the subject. But inside I was dying of laughter. You know you have an ignorant ass reply by someone who knows nothing about him and his music. Its like a contraction of his two most overplayed songs ever.

.

Have any of you had similar tales of woe, newbies claiming they know about Prince, but prove they really don't.

Got some kind of love for you, and I don't even know your name

I once told a girl in college that I liked Prince and she said "Prince? Isn't he that dude from the 50's??"

I was like, "yeah, yeah he is." lol

Everytime a black artist who isn't rapping is described as being 'like prince'? Borderline racist tbh

The most consistently literal ignorant statement I often get is "but he hasn't done anything for ages".

neutral

I'm comfortable enough with my own choices now to not vehemently defend/justify/give evidence to the contrary but it still makes me pull that face above internally...

I read all of them here, the most persistant and absurd probably being that he never intended to release the Black Album at all in 87 and that it was all an elaborate schement from the beginning, at WB's exense, to create a hype.

OP and the first reply seem a bit mean-spirited. Why would think less of someone or laugh at them because they don't like the same music as you?

When I was a teenager I used to swoon over his sexiness and my father would say, "That little wimp?!" and I would be like, "Yeah, he's little but he has muscles and he's hot!" and then my father would laugh his ass off that Prince had muscles (Purple Rain would be playing in the background, Prince in the basement, his shirt off, clearly having muscles!) but you could not convince my father at all.....

I just saw that the title for this was "from a stranger" and I gave an account from my father, oh well...

the most annoying to me is when people knows zero about the Prince music post Diamonds & Pearls.

a female friend of mine, she is such a sweetheart...

she said she was a huge fan of Prince,

But when I played some songs.. she did not know the songs Gold and Alphabet Street.

Now how frustrating is that...? lol

She is still very very sweet so I have forgiven her,

but a huge Prince fan? No she is not a big one.. eek

The Monday after P performed "Fury" on SNL, a coworker came up to me and said, "How was Prince? I didn't watch it but my brother said it seems like Prince recently must have taken some guitar lessons."

"Prince? nah I'm not really into pop music especially not when it's that cheesey" - At which point I shared "The Ride" from the Sacrifice of Victor, which prompted the response "He's not playing that guitar though"... Yeh Claptons favorite guitarist can't actually play.

People saying he's a Jehovah's Witness - but they say it as if it's impossible. Like he cannot be a Witness and a rock star. And I don't know why that is. Because, of course, he can be both. See? lol

Back in 2001 I was hanging out downtown Detroit. These two homeless guys came up to me and started a conversation, and somehow the subject of Prince came up (I may have been wearing a Prince shirt if I'm not mistaken). Anyway, one guy insisted that Prince stole the idea of "When U Were Mine" from him, saying that it was he (the homeless guy) who wrote the lyrics and came up with the music for it, and within a year, it was on the "Dirty Mind" album.

He also said that back when Prince, the Time, and Vanity 6 were in town for the 1999 tour at Masonic Temple here in Detroit back in November 1983, that he was at a party that Prince and his entourage was at, and that they all were partying and doing coke. I asked him "even Prince?" he said "back then, Prince was the biggest coke head, he just kept it out of the tabloids", and he even said that Prince and Dez Dickerson were in a relationship at that time. When I called bullshit he said "how are you going to tell me what I saw with my own eyes, when back in 1983 you were probably still swimming in yo daddy's nutsack!" lol

Yeah, horribly stupid. Just because they're both black and became very popular in the same decade.

This is so common I have noticed.

I meet so many people now who say that they love Prince and are huge fans, and then say the one phrase that gives them away as a phoney "I really loved Purple Rain, does he have any other albums?" I am like "Motherfucker please!"

.

And the tale about the 2 deros who claimed to have written When u were mine and Prince was a cokehead was funny too. Were they crackheads?

.

And more people who will say the names of any or all of the following singles and claim that's all the reasons they love Prince,

When Doves Cry

Purple Rain

Kiss

Cream

Raspberry Beret

1999

Little Red Corvette

The one about a street

That Batman song

That shit about jewels and cream (Seriously I know people who say this shit).

.

And anyone who still thinks any of the following is deluding themselves

1. Prince is gay.

2. He is half Spanish/White/Italian/Philippino/Mexican/Chinese/Puerto Rican/Other Hispanic/Martian/Uranian/Hyena/Dog/Not a woman, not a man, I am something u will never understand.

3. He had a rib removed to suck it.

4. He has a shrine to Marilyn Monroe

5. He died in 1984 and Christopher Bernini Tracy has been his body double.

6. What's his real name.

I heard some songs on the radio I liked, only to find out it was Prince when I first started coming here, funny. I think it was: If I was Ur Girlfriend, Erotic City, Why U Wanna Treat Me So Bad, Head... can't remember anything else...

Why on Earth didn't you just laugh then said "You mean you liked Purple Rain AND Raspberry Beret? You have great taste."

To answer your question, I would first have to believe people should know at least one thing about Prince. Other than the usual "isn't he gay?" (which I would not call ignorant), nothing comes to mind. Maybe if someone insisted at a party that Prince originally started as a country singer, then I'd have an anecdote.
