I totally get the comparison between MNIP and Jacksons "Bad". Jackson had sensed the "harder" edge that was coming through in music with the "Bad" album. This was "My Name Is Prince (and I'm bad too)". It wasn't even subtle.

[Edited 1/11/15 12:14pm]

Really? The 'Bad' album was more reactionary to 'Purple Rain', was it not? Jackson wanted to be dirty and gritty and 'bad' like Prince, resulting with songs like 'Dirty Diana' being 'Darling Nikki-lite'.

I think Bad was a calculated image change. Jackson wanted a "harder" image. But I think it was more to do with what he saw happening in black culture at the time, rather than being a direct result of what Prince did on Purple Rain.

But I think the song MNIP is Prince doing the same thing in his own way. There is even a line in the song "you must become a Prince before a king anyway". I'm not saying the whole symbol album. Just the song MNIP seems like an answer to "Bad".

I haven't listened to the podcast yet, but many of the songs people here are listing as being 'bottom' are among my favorites from their respective albums

(not saying they're the best tracks on them though).

I really like "Take Me With U", "Wherever U Go, Whatever U Do", "I Dig U Better Dead", "U Make My Sunshine", "Lemmon Crush", "Scandalous", "The Arms of Orion"...

Hell, I absolutely love "The Ladder"! heart

To the point that I get goosebumps whenever I watch that part on the "Prince - A Music Portrait" documentary, where he is rehearsing it on the piano.

But one thing that there's no dispute: "Purple and Gold" is really unbearable.

Other songs I do not like:

  • "Jughead"
  • "Live 4 Love"
  • "2 Nigs United 4 West Compton"
  • "Loose!"

Skip the 5 minute acid speech and the actual song isn't half bad. He just sings it terribly - like, really 'impassioned'. It's better than The Rainbow Children and it has no offensive, but rather inviting lyrics...

Soooo many great songs being listed here (Wherever U Go Whatever U Do, Live 4 Love, Solo, Rave Un2, Strange But True, Blue Light). mad

I actually think there are very few outright bad Prince songs, but he seemed to go through a bit of a tacky try-hard phase from 89-92.

I don't particularly rate any of these songs highly:

Jughead

The Flow

My Name Is Prince

Daddy Pop

New Power Generation

Lemon Crush

Batdance

Arms Of Orion

Because it's like Beetlejuice. Mention that shitty "song" too many times and Prince will appear before us singing it, haunting us in eternal torment.

Bart, I actually forgot about the existence of One Song for years, until just a few months ago. I gave it another spin to refresh my memory. Good lord. It's like Spinal Tap but not funny or interesting. What a shitshow.

One Song is not that bad. I will never listen to the intro about him babbling about whatever he is bumbling about, but once the proper song starts and he starts singing, it is a decent song for a free song, and it would be fine as a b-side or a somewhat throwaway album track. My bottom five songs are far more garbage than One Song. Graffitti Bridge is the only one that should not be in the bottom five, but that "love of a boy, love of a girl" crap is so bad, I can't listen to the song anymore. It has some ok music, and nice guitar solo...but I'll probably never listen to it again.

Pomm Pomm? At least get the title right if you're gonna call it the worst ever. It's not that bad...

Arms of Orion is mundane, but bottom 5? No..some nice vocals...

Planet Earth? My god...it's a very good almost great song...

Gold Standard is among the best of the 2 new albums by far

Lolita? Among the better half of 3121, but something is missing...but bottom five?

Purple And Gold

Jughead

The Wedding Feast

Push It Up

Graffiti Bridge

Now those are five pieces of garbage.

So true. And listen to all the little gasps and grunts between every line of the verses in MNIP - very MJ. He really sounded like an imitator on that one. Luckily, the album went in a better direction...

I recommend putting on "Push It Up" and giving it a good listen.

I hated it when it came about, but in retrospect, I don't think it's that bad. It's just marred by the NPS / Rave era production, mainly the drums and the chants that sound too detached from the rest of the mix. The melody and the underlying groove are pretty good funk stuff though. I don't think it has the same lameness to it as some other tracks from the same time period as "Mad".

I don't get the wide-spread hate for Life "O" The Party. Can somebody explain it to me in at least somewhat rational terms? The production is really raw and combines elements from "Housequake" and "The Ball". As a piece of funk music from the 00s it sure kicks more ass than what he put on some of the successive albums ("Get On The Boat" sounded pretty damn stale in comparison).

Glad you said that. I've always quite liked "Push it up". I never placed it in the same time period as Mad though. That song I placed as more of a come/gold outtake. I'm almost certain I owned the Deposition boot before NPS was released. Athough I know he pulled Mad back out the vaults around the time of NPS. ("Turn on the dirty switch and back up... far" - then you can hear him kind of beatboxing/exhailing mixed in with the guitar. Thats dope). You don't care for that song?

To me. The intro kills it before it even starts. P's vocals sound forced. It's got some funk but it's got no decent hook. I can't find anything memorable in the song at all.

I just googled the lyrics and despite their lack of depth, there are some really funny lyrics in there. Perhaps and alternate version or a remix would have made the song more memorable.

^ From the "Dance with the devil boot"?... It's a guilty pleasure of mine. I've not heard it in years I'll have to dig out that CD. I love that sample from "love machine". I always (incorrectly) think of it as Gett off 91 because he uses the "everybody grab a body" line from what became "Gett off".

Hmm. I think I might have originally gotten it on the "Dance With The Devil" boot back in the day.

It combines elements from "Love Machine", "Gett Off" and "Escape" (never liked "Escape" either and in to me it might be his worst released track from the 1980s). I think the outtakes from this era are just some of the worst music he's ever done in general. The production is just so tinny and the melodies especially during the verses often sound like a kid could have come up with them. One of the guys in the podcast mentions "Round And Round" as one of the worst pieces of music Prince has ever done and I can see where he's coming from. Thankfully, Prince had enough good stuff that ended up on the albums, but when I listen to the outtakes from the period I just have to wonder why did he really even bother recording so much stuff in that vein. It's probably because he had Paisley Park records still to run and thought he needed to write more material for other artists.

I think I know what you mean. I wonder if that's the way it was recorded or somebody tagging their leaks? PrinceV says GS91 was intended to promote the new GS club in mpls which makes sense. Something upbeat that uses the name of the club. I just geek out anytime Prince samples or references himself. I think this song is particularly interesting in that it's a branch in the evolution of "Gett off"

I don't mind "Round and Round". It's nothing special, but it's a catchy little pop song. I remember someone once saying it's as close as we'd ever hear to a Prince/Jackson collaboration. Which is probably accurate. I think you're right about him recording a lot. They sound to me sparse and unfinished. Compared to how he usually lavishes tracks with multilayered instrumentation

SO here's my reasoning for my picks. Mr. Dean mentioned some of my comments, but here the 'unabridged' version. Hopefully others will follow suite and actually explain why they pick their bottom five. HOpefully it simply isn't more than "i just don't like it". Anywhoo....here you go:

#5: This pick is the epitome of overdoing a song. This is the bastard step-son of what was originally a good song. As far as I know, this is “3rd generation” crap. Things were just fine and dandy with My Summertime Thang, sung by Morris. Written by Prince, but sung byMorris. In fact, My Summertime Thang is to the movie Graffiti Bridge what If The Kid Can’t Make You Come was to the movie Purple Rain. My Summertime Thang is a vehicle to showcase Morris’ pimp swagger and game towards a girl, in this case, Aura. It works. But was shelved. Then you have The Latest Fashion – sung by Morris Day and the Time. Again, another song written by prince, with slightly different lyrics from what the final stink pile turned from the album proper. Yet, with this one, all unnecessary fluff is removed. Plus, the music is different. Not so
loud and wild. It has a more sinister/serious tone to it. Sung waaay better by Morris Day and just works. I’ve always imagined this version being played in Morris’ club in the movie instead of ‘Shake’. This version should have been included.

Instead, we get GB’s version of a song, and my #5 on my list: The Latest Fashion. It uses My Summertime Thang’s music, and the lyrics of The Latest Fashion (version 1) and mixes them both with added fluff that takes it over the top, making it a mockery of what it could have been with its stupid rap, with it’s apparent “battle” tone between Morris and The Kid and it just fails in every way. The song is so bad the scene it was attached to was edited out of the movie. Basically, it’s a song that in production morphed from Pimp, to Cool, to shit.

=======================

#4: Number four is likely overlooked by others, but the best way for me to describe this one is basically in one word: grating. From the way it’s sung, to the music (or severe lack thereof) to the overly used sound effects, this track comes from The Truth album and it is Animal Kingdom. From the first “sung” words you get some of the most horribly sung words ever. I find no need for this song to be sung this way at all. It’s not quirky, it’s not original, and it’s totally boring and a skipper. And all the dolphin noises get boring really quick. Animal Kingdom should have been
avoided at all costs.

=======================

#3 I’ve gone into detail before on my #3 so let me do it again. This is a low-point track in an unfortunate album that lacks true identity. That album is Chaos and Disorder, and the #3 track is Right The Wrong. For me, the track borders on sounding very offensive in its delivery. From the very beginning music, which sounds incredibly cheesy. The music is standard Hollywood-style ‘Native American’ sounding and is just out of place with the rest of the album. But take this track on its own merits and it still fails. The rhyming is forced, the music is horrible. And then it goes into “church-mode”. It’s like the song has no identity whatsoever. It sounds like “silly-ass-prince” when it’s meant to be serious. Right The Wrong, frankly…equals WRONG.

=======================

#2 Jughead – What’s there to say. Prince raps and you have horrible rapping throughout. Others can elaborate much better than I.

=======================

#1 Everybody Loves Me – When silly goes wrong it goes real wrong. Let me be frank here…prince sounds…what’s the politically correct way to say this? Oh, that’s right…delayed. It’s not fun, it’s not Silly Ass Prince…it’s just plain dumb. No More Candy 4 U did it better and it was a fun song. It’s a short-bus song, plain and simple, and it belongs nowhere but singing lullabies to Purple and Gold when it can’t sleep. There, I said it.

=======================

Dishonorable Mentions:

  • · I Rock, Therefore I Am
  • · Wedding Feast - barely a song, and embarrassing when it is.
  • · Orgasm - though I know that it's not really a song.

Walking alone in the dark, I see nothing u see
I can be in a park, or flying in the…in the deep sea
I wish u’d hold my hand; then everything could b
