I remember when I first bought Purple Rain, one of the first things I did after hearing that song was to record it on a cassette tape, take the tape apart and reverse it. Then I put it back together and played it to hear the most beautiful praise.
I always thought it was genius that Prince included glorious praise immediately after singing a vicious ode to a magazine abusing whore. Despite what Prince thinks about his nasty past, it was this that made more of a mark on me. That's why I think it's pointless for him to rail against his past.
