I always felt that you had to know all of Prince's music in order to offer any credible commentary on it via a podcast.

How the hell is "Take Me With U" and "Scandalous" in the bottom 5 Prince songs is beyond me. As far as I'm concerned "Purple And Gold" is the number 1 worst Prince song ever. If it was written and performed by him then it should be attributed to him. Other songs:

2. "Undisputed"-I hate how he brags about being a trendsetter and how trends follow him, when the Rave Un2 The Joy Fantastic album sounds like Prince watching Total Request Live in 1999 and recording songs with the teenybop market in mind to make hits. Chuck D answered the call like a pro and did the song for Prince just on G.P.

3. "Guitar"-The lyrics are juvenile and non-sensical. Jacked U2 for the lead line for the intro and chorus and his vocals sound adolescent. There's nothing witty about the lyrics and yes, we know nothing compares to your...guitar.

4. "U Make My Sunshine"-I love the gospel music arrangement, but the lyrics are not worthy of the music. Lyrics about "getting your paper real steady". The lyric is decent for a Diddy song, but not for an artist of P's caliber.

5. "Dig U Better Dead"-Enough said

Honorable Mention-Who said Prince didn't have bad songs during his peak. Totally agree with Big Sexy N Sac on "The Ladder". That song is meandering and plodding (Thank you Alex Hahn)

"Laydown" and "Everybody Loves Me"-2 songs from an overrated album that sound like rehashes of the "Minneapolis Sound" to placate people's '80s nostalgia

"Black Sweat"-I was embarrased for Prince when this song was on the radio. I don't want to hear the words "break you off" from Prince. That aint going to get you Hot 97 rotation. And the lyric "Scream like a white lady" sounds like Little Richard telling a joke that nobody laughs at.

Pomm Pomm? At least get the title right if you're gonna call it the worst ever. It's not that bad...

Arms of Orion is mundane, but bottom 5? No..some nice vocals...

Planet Earth? My god...it's a very good almost great song...

Gold Standard is among the best of the 2 new albums by far

Lolita? Among the better half of 3121, but something is missing...but bottom five?

Purple And Gold

Jughead

The Wedding Feast

Push It Up

Graffiti Bridge

Now those are five pieces of garbage.

I don't like BS but like NP, don't really hear them as the same song myself. I don't hate BS though.

As for bottom 5, like any list of songs, it's hard to nail down exactly 5.

Purple & Gold
Jughead
Sea Of Everything

Silicon

Golden Parachute
Van Gogh
Cloreen Bacon Skin
Undisputed

Man In A Uniform

There are probably some so bland that I don't even remember them.

The sung melodies of the verses are very similar, especially where they fall within the measures. Both melodies are quite 'rhythmic,' with the accents occuring in the same places. The little stepwise buildup to the chorus is identical in both songs. You could practically swap verses/choruses between them and they would stay more or less the same. Try singing one over the other and you will see how much they are alike in significant ways.

Mind you, they are produced somewhat differently, in terms of the musical/instrumental elements but, again, that bubbling base line from New Position could be dropped into Black Sweat and it would stay the same song. Tempo, feel, maybe even key are all the same or similar.

Forgive my clumsy explanation. I am not a musician. biggrin

Thanks for the explaination, but "New Position" has musicality that "Black Sweat" lacks. "New Position has steel drums, an electric bass line that is central to its danceability and the lyrics are witty and playful. "Black Sweat" sounds an attempt to get rotation on Hot 97 and score an urban hit. The song is musically closer to "Kiss".

Since we moved into the new milenium I think this is a much easier question. I was surprised to see "Arogance" mentioned a couple of times. But I can see why it's there. Not to say it's a great song but it's interesting enough with those horns. that I don't hate it.

I totally get the comparison between MNIP and Jacksons "Bad". Jackson had sensed the "harder" edge that was coming through in music with the "Bad" album. This was "My Name Is Prince (and I'm bad too)". It wasn't even subtle.

Ronnie Talk To Russia wasn't on anyones list? Really?

I was surprised there weren't more tracks from the latter half of RU2TJF - "Silly Game", "Wherever you go", "Strange But True" - they're some truely awful songs. Not to mention the hatchet job he did with EverydayIAWRoad.

I waited the whole podcast for someone to mention Cybersingle but nobody did. Perhaps because it's not an album track. Even at the time the name sounded dated.

It's so easy to pick 5 because you can throw practically all of 3121, Planet Earth or 20Ten on the fire.

I was pleased to see Jughead still on peoples lists. I was surprised there were so few tracks from Emancipation but I think only Mr Happy got a mention?

Side note - Mr Deans Prince/Jackson vocal comparrison when the guys are talking about MNIP is fuckin hillarious!

Dude... Silicon really? worse than "Silly Game", "Wherever you go" "Strange but true" or "Why should I do that when I can do this". Not that I'm saying Silicon is a great track, but among the songs he was doing in that style around the time, I thought Silicon was one of the most interesting.

Van Gogh is a tough one. I'm not keen on the Prince version. The band he wrote it for I think may have been called Van Gogh. I thought their version was cool. As a song I think it has feet. The chorus is catchy and there is something of a hook with the van gogh metaphor in there. I think he has way worse songs. To each their own.

Rave Un2 The Joy Fantastic is Prince's worst album of the '90s. I don't know who said "Prettyman" on the podcast, but that song deserved to be buried as a hidden track.

Yeah, I can see that, too. The falsetto and the dry, spare production and arrangement of Black Sweat are akin to Kiss, even if it's closer to New Position, structurally. Hell, I love all three. But I digress...

Isn't that the fun part of lists like this? You NEVER agree with them! Anywho, now that I'm here, might as well throw in my Most Unlistenable Prince Songs:
Purple and Gold (think we all agree on that one)
My Name Is Prince(this is a joke? Really?! And not even a funny one!)
Johnny (that irritating oh oh oh oh oh oh)
3 Chains of Gold (Prince doing progrock? Oh, pleeeeze!?!)
One of Your Tears (a line about a used condom will ruin any song)

Listening to it now, I am glad it isso controversial as 99% of those songs mentioned are nasty. Still the first song to be mentioned was The ladder, and I was like "Oh hell naw". The rest like Take me with u is at least honest, because as he says, Apollonia can not sing. Plus that lame ass lyric about waking up the connection, is this sex or a line of extension cords used to hook my electric mower up to 3 extension cords on my long ass lawn.

.

The rest like Mr Goodnight, Boytrouble, we gets up, Mr Happy and I know these are rubbish. This was a cool Podcast and after getting a new computer and reinvigorating all my lost Podcast episodes are enjoying this.

.

My 5 worst....

.

1. Solo (Just self indulgent and yuk)

2. Da da da (More crap rap)

3. The Rainbow Children (Too long and boring and full of stupid darth vader voices)

4. Purple and Gold (That whole song is wrong)

5. Lemon Crush (Just nasty, he needs to stick to his jobba).

Got some kind of love for you, and I don't even know your name

Really? The 'Bad' album was more reactionary to 'Purple Rain', was it not? Jackson wanted to be dirty and gritty and 'bad' like Prince, resulting with songs like 'Dirty Diana' being 'Darling Nikki-lite'.

Really 'Darling Nikki'? I always interpretted 'Dirty Diana' was his version of 'Little Red Corvette'.
