Prince is Talking Loud and Doing Very Little The general consensus is that fans are very happy with AOA. The album was not subjected to years of hype and it far exceeded our expectations. Remember when that type of thing was the norm for Prince?
He is now the victim of being his own promoter. He hyped 3EG amd Plectrum so much and so long that it was doomed to be a disappointment. He hypes his tours as havimg over 100 songs to play and changing sets and he ends up playimg the same set every night. He sets expectations for the reunion with WB and the PR reissue and we get nothing. The "BIG" 2013 promise was another dud. Montreaux DVD. Josh. I can go on and on.
Prince fans generally like 4 things. 1. New Prince Music. 2. Unreleased Prince Music. 3. Live Performances. 4. Associated artist projects.
Stop promoting and just give us those four things and the promotion will take care of itself. I am glad he is no longer on the internet. The dude has been talking loud and doing very little for several years now. |

So, says you. I enjoyed very much the 2013 LOL Tour with lots of new and rare songs being played. I also enjoy AOA and PlecElec as both are still in heavy rotation in my car and house. Also, I know I'm in the minority, but I could care less about a Purple Rain reissue. I have all the songs and lived the experience so, more than likely, a Purple Rain reissue will be merely a "meh" to me. From The Rainbow Children to now, I'm quite satisfied with what he has provided. |

The UK tour featured a wide variety of songs and were some of the best performances I've ever seen from Prince. I couldn't be happier in that regard. Prince actually managed to surpass my expectations and I'd seen him live about 20 times before.
However, I agree that the promotion for AOA has been problematic and I've now seen on Drfunkenberry's twitter that Prince's touring plans are also 'on hold' for the time being. It seems there are unexpected problems of some sort... |

3rdEyeGirl hyped? There was a short clip with Donna "arriving" at Pasley Park. Other than that they were his live band... It was hardly all over the news. Outside of Prince.org that isn't news at all. It's quite different to their live sound, but it's a decent album overal.

I kind of agree with the whole "we've learned 100 songs" - I think it's now becoming obvious this is something they're told to say. 30/40 is probably more accurate, his setlists are never that varied.
All the other stuff you mentioned is just your perspective. Fans perhaps do overhype much of Princes work. As you've just demonstrated Prince tweeted something about a "surprise" and you've interpreted that as a solemn promise from the guy.
How can you say you liked AOA then criticize Josh who produced the album? and presumably the unreleased songs from the Yahoo stream - Prince hasn't talked loud about any of what you've mentioned. |

Concerning Plectrum Electrum, I very much agree. If Prince had just dropped this record out of the clear blue sky with no hype , people would have been gushing for months about it. The record is solid and the approach he took when making it is something completely new and fresh as far as his career is concerened. He blew it . |

Well, the shows he played in the UK back in February were truly spectacular, inlcuding the bun fight queuing shenanigans. They were mental and I bloody loved it. Loads of new stuff, reworks, but no one could ever say they were the same old same old.
The arena shows were OK to excellent and his show at the Roundhouse was a spectacular triumph.
I like both Albums and thought they'd be heavy hitters in my collection, but to be honest they both are becoming a little flat for me already. There are some brilliant tracks, but...
Still hungry for more. Would prefer the NPG album, rathe than PR remaster though. |

I am not sure why so many people post here about what Prince doesn't do? He's a musician first above all else and that why I took a heavy interest in him in the first place many years ago. People around this forum post about him like he should have and could have and it would have been great had he done so and so. I get we all are entitled to having opinions and can voice them. I get that. But I am just happy he is still around making music and touring for me to see and listen to. All the other stuff such as he is not maximizing his true potential is just wierd for me. I take him as he is, the good the bad and the ugly. I want his music. His personal life and his way he reacts to the outside world is his business not mine. Because I know when I am at a live concert and the spotlights all focus on him and all the other musicians are quiet and he rips into a guitar solo, that's when I know real reason I am a person who appreciates Prince's gift as a musician. Those are some of the happiest moments of my life. My bottom line point is appreciate what you can from this man, leave the negativity alone! |

Yes he plays a lot of the same songs in a set but what he has played over 100 songs with the girls in his band. I knew the person who said there were only 30-40 was way off and I was bored so I had a look thorugh Prince vault at unique songs which weren't part of a sampler set or piano medley and got a list of over 120 songs. I'm sure there's more too but even so, that's not a bad effort.

I think there's an issue with artists who've been around for a long time. There's the way things were done in the past and the way things are done now. Promotion and distribution is so different today. It wasn't that long ago that Lil Wayne was selling music from his car vs now where you can just create a stream from your phone.changes happen so quickly that if you blink you're left behind. Prince has always been about making music. So maybe he doesn't have the time to post, blog, tweet, and whatever else these kids are doing today. Perhaps he could hire someone to handle that. But maybe he just doesn't want to. Nothing turns a person off faster than a bunch of folks standing around screaming GIMME GIMME GIMME! I am enjoying AOA. The concerts I've seen have a special place in my mind. And I am completely thrilled with the afro! |

I stand corrected. I guess I shot a bit low with 30/40. Having said that quite a few of the songs on the list come from the sampler set? Also a few of them (granted only a handful) hadn't been played live until recently (marz, clouds, anotherlove etc). Where as 3EG have been using the "over 100 songs" since back in Feb/March?
Even so it's still an impressive list.

Nope, I didn't add anything which was part of a sampler set. I'm sure many have been included in the sampler sets at various points but these were all taken from non-sampler parts of the relevant set lists. In some shows the band have played along with the sampler set so that would expand the list further still.
As for the Feb/March thing, 36 in my list are unique from 2013, so you only have to find 64 from the 2014 list which were played in '13 and you have 100 being played since 2013. I started from the UK shows this year, went fowards, then went back to 2013 so it was a bit of an arse about face way of doing it. It was more to see if it really was a 100+ list and it easily is. It was part of the piano set, so not performed by the band, I ignored anything in the sampler sets and piano medleys as we were talking about the claimed 100+ rehearsed songs. RIP |

I'm not going to do that. haha I was well under with my guess. It must be well over 100. You could probably add all the songs from PlectrumElectrum, and if we shot low and said 10 outtakes that while they've never been played live - they obviously know how to play them. |

Good for you I wholeheartedly agree. I will say that AOA is one of his best CDs in a while, BUT I only play the same 4 songs. That whole affirmation thing gets me everytime, though I like the song Way Back Home. As my late older brother used to say: where is the funk? It appears that ever since he made it thanks to Purple Rain CD (still not one of my faves, I love Dirty Mind the best), Prince releases what he wants. Is this the real reason why he got back in bed with Warner Brothers? Money? Bring us the funk, Prince. Jimi, Stevie, Temps, Sly, Marvin, Michael, always gave us great albums from beginning to end. Always dream and go after your dreams, NEVER give up!! |
