Nobody But Prince - A long history of controversy

All written in fun. If you're outraged by recent events perhaps you haven't been paying attention.

-----

Films Purple Rain - clearly an anti-hero story that lays bare many deeply unflattering traits. Result is a smash hit. Hooray for sympathetic mysoginistic narcissists!

Releases Around the World In A Day as follow up to Purple Rain. At the time the album was odd and unexpected.

Replaces Alexander Oneal with Morris Day as lead in The Time. Allegedly for being too black. Adopts "Alexander Nevermind" pseudonym for writing credits. Later, reportedly becomes concerned with his own market / media perception as being too white.

Fires Jam and Lewis From The Time, because... reasons.

Declines We Are The World's invite. Instead, pens "Tears In Ur Eyes", and "Hello". Hello seems a far more pointed and biting response to WATW ("we'll do what we can but there's just as many hungry children here at home...").

Fires Director from UTCM, because ... movies are just songs with pictures! Film predictably bombs.

Fires the Revolution, because...reasons.

Cancels the Black Album just before distribution, then records Lovesexy requiring the CD contain only a single track. How did he force WB into any of this?!

Convinced WB to bankroll Graffiti Bridge as sequel to Purple Rain. Comparatively, the result is a weirdly naive Sunday school musical that predictably bombs.

Goes to war with WB over contract he signed, scrawling "SLAVE" on his face. Try that with your employer during your next annual review.

Adopts a Gangsta Glam persona to reclaim credibility with the R&B/Urban market. See Alexander Oneal.

Changes his name to a symbol. Supposedly to protest and evade his contract, but not sure this wouldn't have happened otherwise.

Becomes early Internet entrepreneur, until he goes to war with the Internet and fan sites.

Joins Jehovah's Witnesses, goes door to door to spread the good word.

Declines anniversary reunions, stating he doesn't look back. Meanwhile most live shows are greatest hits playlists.

Rejoins WB, securing old masters and new promotion for new act and AOA/PE albums. Disses his new WB partners prior to release. Hyped remasters fail to materialize.

After declaring the Internet dead, then embracing social media, closes all social media accounts, because... reasons.

Reportedly voices his disapproval of Wendy and Lisa's same sex lifestyle. 20ish years after exploiting their sex appeal on stage, in videos, and on Computer Blue.

Writes an open letter to Madonna, lobbying her influence with WB, to regain his masters. Tells her about a dream she was in.

Announces on Oprah "Recent analysis has proved that there's probably two people inside of me. There's a Gemini. And we haven't determined what sex that other person is yet."

smile Didn't Quincy Jones reportedly say 'you've always been a prick' and some would say its true. He's always done whatever he wants and doesn't give a shit, the mad little fucker. Can be frustrating but got to admire him in a way as well

Yes a well written list of his very odd ways. His music is brilliant. But his personal life and the way he relates to most outside things is indeed very strange. No doubt he has some issues but there is no doubt that is a first class musician. Such is the way with the best of the best. They excel at one thing and are lost in many other things. Yeah he has a very wierd ride

I would add him actually filing a lawesuit against hundreds of his fans that had their cell phone up taking pics of his show, but on his video for 1+1 is 3 he says repeatedly "Raise your cell phones, I don't mind."

Let's face it, Prince is an asshole.

Not sure what funksterr meant with the "C-NOTE" reference.. The only thing I can think of was the fact that the original upload of "Copenhagen" was a few minutes longer & contained a portion of a Miles Davis song that was later edited out in the "re-release".. The other two are references to jibberish that Prince posted on his website in the late 90's;

----

Nov 3, 1998: Letitgo
The day Lendy and Wisa really part with the past and let the future in2 their xperience is the day in which they stop falling 4 journalists' sneaky sneaks and never again mention their 4mer employer... (lest we 4get: they left on unfriendly terms). Disgruntled postal workers somehow find their way 2 firearms! If u haven't got anything nice 2 say... o, nevermind!

----

January 10, 1999: Open Letter 2 Madonna from The Artist:
Madonna: artist 2 artist, eye am sure u understand the connection eye feel 2 my music. U more than any1 at Time Warner knows the patience and care with which we give birth 2 creation... and u maybe moreso than any1 knows how much a new artist longs 2 find a place amongst "the chosen few" 2 flaunt those creations (and at the same time put food on one's table). Music lawyers, managers and execs make deals best suited 4 their futures as well as urs in most cases... OWNERSHIP OF MASTER RECORDINGS IS ALMOST NEVER AN ISSUE! (let's remember, it was 1978!)

Eye dreamt of u and eye at the Grammy Awards and felt a need 2 write this letter 2 u. In my dream, eye approached u and asked u if u remembered me, and u said "sure"... u were on ur way up 2 receive 1 of numerous awards u will no doubt receive that night, and eye asked u 2 help me with my fight 2 retain ownership of my legacy and u said, "eye don't own ur masters, Time Warner does... if it was my company, u could have them."

But eye say 2 u, dear sister, it IS ur company as long as u remain in their graces... 4 all Artists, Madonna, make a stand 4 what is RIGHT... surely they will listen 2 u!" In the dream u seemed 2 feel me and yet u were a bit non-committal... so as u approached the podium, eye followed u, and as we stood side by side, eye said, "b glad this a commercial break!" and eye walked offstage and looked 4 Wyclef. Interpretaions aside, artist 2 artist, "U Can Help Us... and eye know u will becuz u REMEMBER ME.

Or more to the point: WTF?

As for that second bad XTC-trip inspired dream, wellll.. that was pathetic.
I'm sure Madonna remembered him, but apparently Prince didn't remember her phone number.
