I actually like a lot of the lyrics (whether Davis wrote them or Prince)--and several moments in the song. It's just the whole thing that drags.

Bad-assed tune, for sure

There isn't a single song on Sign O the Times that I don't like.

Matt Thorne answers this question in his book (pages 159-160). Carole Davis (not King) wrote the song. Prince's lawyers called her and offered to buy it for $25000. She refused and got offered a 50% share of the royalties. This time she accepted. So it's actually not a Prince song at all.

Damn, that's an eye-opener! I've been googling around, but can't find her version anywhere...

It's out there somewhere--I remember seeing the album in the racks decades back. It was cheap, but I didn't pick it up. So I've never heard it.

Apparently Prince changed some of the lyrics.

I always felt that this song would have worked really well in Under The Cherry Moon.Imagine Christopher serenading Mary with this song,just before they make love.
