My Name Is Prince - Alternate Lyrics? Hi all, I remember someone on the org posted last year about having a promo cd of My Name Is Prince that had slightly alternate lyrics. Something along the lines of 'On the 7th day he made music' as opposed to 'On the 7th day he made me'. Can anyone shed some light on this? There's a few promos floating around online but I'm not sure which features this rare edit...

I've never heard of this. "in the begining god made the sea/but on the 7th day he made music" doesn't seem to flow as a lyric. Although possibly one of the extended remixes resamples the song in some way...
There is a version apparently destined for "The Simpsons" titled "My name is Bart". I don't know if it was written by Prince for the show or if the writers just wanted to use the song.

I remember hearing the "he made MUSIC" version on the radio after the song had been on the radio for a month or so and thinking "WTF?" regarding the lyric change.
I don't know the story behind the lyric change, but it is the CHR Edit.
I know it turned up on the Work It 2.0 series, disc 25.

If it's the CHR edit, then I have it--though I don't think I've listened to it. So, I assume that's "Contemporary Hit Radio"--does anyone know the story behind it. I'm pretty sure the only thing I ever heard played on the radio was the standard lyrics.

I found a few listings of a 2 track promo CD on different sales sites--they were sold out. The two tracks were the CHR edit--one with rap, one without. But it's not on Princevault.

Seems like I've got another item to add to my wantlist! Thanks for clarifying all. It does seem to be strange edit as it doesn't even rhyme. Anyone got more knowledge about these so-called CHR edits?

That kind of rings a bell with me, but I think it was on one of the more hardcore dance mixes.

I wonder if given the time period it was a change made to align with this name change...

I have a bunch of remixes of the My Name is Prince song including the original 1991 release. I know a lot of you all here know this man's music very well, like me, but I don't remember hearing this lyric or know anything about it. You sure that's what you heard? I am not saying you didn't, I am just saying I am not aware of anything along these lines.

This was mentioned by another orger, I haven't heard this version myself (that is, if you were asking me directly). And I know how you feel, I thought I had his catalogue locked down until this came up. I guess that's the beauty of P; there's always new things to discover.

It's real. I tracked it down the other night. It's called "My Name Is Prince [CHR Edit]" with two variations (with rap, and without rap).. The word "music" is clipped from the line "When you hear my music, you'll be having fun" and is used to replace the word "me".. Sounds really out of place. Perhaps this edit was intended for radio stations who might have thought "On the 7th day, he made me" was blasphemous?

I first heard the edits around 1993/4 on a bootleg called Only 4U blah blah blah

Yes - my thoughts exactly on why the word "music" would replace "me", although from the sound of the edit, I would have almost thought this was a local radio edit. I was very surprised to later found out is was an official edit from Warner Bros.

But in the case of the original post concerning the "CHR edit," Princevault (as of right now, since I just checked) still doesn't mention it. As to Bart's comment (which seems to have disappeared in the "previously on Prince.org" box up above) concerning the need for a wiki--Princevault isn't one, as he's pointed out before, and while they accept corrections and additions, it's not nearly as easy as being able to make them yourself. Princevault is great--but it doesn't always answer every question. It does have the answer (more or less) to your question about "My Name Is Bart"--but nothing about "CHR".

So we don't need Prince.org anymore then.
All of our answers, thoughts, and opinions are also at Prince Vault.

I have heard it...entitled "unreleased clean version". It has been edited to have Prince's lyric altered to "music" in place of "me" at the end of the line ..."but on the 7th day, he made..(music)".

Yup, I checked Princevault before I posted. The org's my go-to when I can't find the answer elsewhere. Thanks again everyone for helping. Now I just need to find the cd!
