He probably just needed to do a couple of things different
- when making appearances after a release, try consistently actually performing songs from those releases.
- make more appearances promoting the new releases.
- tours promoting those new releases
- a channel on sirius/XM
- basically expose as many people as possible to new music (and the back catalog)
My kids tell me they don't know anyone besides me who listens to Prince. That really shouldn't be the case. |

One thing that's not mentioned very often is the music he did for the film I'll Do Anything. I think if that film would have been released as a musical as intended and been even a moderate hit, it would have gained him some further respect in the industry. The songs were 'adult' in the way of not being bubble gum, teen aged pop. Similar to the tracks he did for Mavis Staples' first album. Prince could have perhaps rode on the publicity for the film and used it as a vehicle to do more 'serious' projects within Hollywood.
That being said Prince is his own worst enemy. You can't really help someone who won't listen to his own advisors. Prince can apparently afford to be capricious with his decisions. He's done it for many, many years and burned lots of bridges.
It seems like since Prince has the money to act like a jerk and not pay any real consequences for it, nothing's gonna stop him from conducting himself any differently. He has the money to indulge himself and I don't see him ever changing his behavior. While he may be a musical genius and a great producer, he is immature and somewhat stunted intellectually and emotionally.
Look at Sheila E. by contrast. Other musicians, producers and arrangers love working with her. She's a first call musician because she's nice, easy to get along with and professional. For whatever reason, Prince has difficulty working with others when he's not the one in complete control. I think that is his greatest weakness, his lack of humilty. [Edited 12/21/14 22:18pm] | |

The only change I would have made was not having release his Greatest Hits album in 1993 which in my opinion knocked Prince's career off track. Prince had a great run muscially from 1982 to 1992. Most of the time Prince was setting the trends in music and always seemed to redefine what was cool and hip in our musical culture until 1993. 1993-94 was when Prince was writing all the music that became the Come album, which was released in 1994, and the Gold album that was released in 1995.

The only other thing I would have changed would be for Prince to tour the US more than he did but to do that we would have lost a lot of really good music in the 80's and 90's. Not being on the road so much meant he could be in the studio more creating new songs. It is a trade off. I know I would not want to change anything about those days. The music was, and is, exceptional. They were great days to live through :yeahthat: would also have made Graffiti Bridge a Prince Only album with a few more of those vault tracks thrown in such as Witness For The Prosecution. Save the Hits albums for 96 so... 93 Come, 94 TGE, 95 C&D (with a few more tracks such as Empty Room and Calhoun Square, 96 The Hits, 97 Emancipation (as a double) 'I loved him then, I love him now and will love him eternally. in 1992 I would have advised Prince to release the Come/Gold album material in 1993. At that time the Come/Gold material sounded fresh, hip, and very different for Prince and fit in the 1993 vibe. The GH album delayed that material by one to two years and by then Grunge exploded and the once cool Come/Gold material once released lost some of its shimmer. By then also most of those tunes were on bootlegs at the time so the music did sound as fresh as it would have if it was released in 1993.
