I'm always enjoying your shows , Question though. Why not let this simmer for a While longer, like One of you mentoined earlier. To give the songs Some room to sink in or evaporate.

2 months isn't enough ? It's actually probably the longest we have waited to review a new album in 6 years .. not to mention people were asking for the review about 7 hours after the album came out LOL

Thanks for that. I really enjoyed listening to your observations, and can't wait to hear the second half.

I'm glad Captain's on the show. Even though my viewpoint is invariably diametrically opposed to his, I respect his opinions and find they help solidify how I feel about each song when I notice myself sighing and muttering away at some of the things he says. But you know, life would be dull if we all saw and heard things the same away.

Keep up the great work.

I know. It just something you lot mention yourselves in some shows. You need some time for the songs but I can understand and certainly will enjoy the show.

Totally agree, often it isn't until someone criticizes or rants against a song that I realise how much I love it! I adore the fact that Prince fans generally agree on very little, every single song has it's fans, every song has it's critics and Peach and Black are great examples of that. If I could give them an award for servies to the Prince community, I would. smile

Great review again, guys!

I largely agree with most of what you are saying; the first 5 tracks are brilliant and then it dips a bit before way back home, the affirmations and time picks it back up again big time.

BCW and This it what it feels like are good, the latter the best of the two, but This could be us I do not feel at all for some reason. Also on the fence about Funkroll, ie is it fun-cheesy or horrible-cheesy?

Thanks again, keep it up!

First up, let me congratulate you on your recognition by NME here in Blighty. Obviously totally deserved, may it be the first of many. (Desert Island Discs are also on the list which has some good stuff)

.

Excellent first half chaps - your podcasts always are - but my oh my! Toejam!! You are ON FIRE with your critique!!! Very entertaining - your enthusiasm not only comes across but engulfs the listener. Good for you sir.

Looking forward to part 2...

Yeah, just a few comments I forgot to add…

.

Love the interpretation that Toejam and the Org contributor give to “Art Official Cage” – it works and I love listening to it again with this new knowledge. I also agree with Captain that some of the beats and sounds are used with a hint of irony. What a mad tune!

.

With “The Gold Standard” I don’t think of “The Black Album” as such, moreso the “1999” album with hints of “Let’s pretend we’re married” and “DMSR”in there. There’s also that sense of Prince having funky fun in the studio as he let’s the groove breathe which also reminds me of “1999”.

.

I really like “The Breakdown”, but always had trouble with the opening lyric “This could be the saddest song…” which sounds so trite – as you guys mention – compared to proper sadness that resides in the world. However, I listened to it differently the other day – “I used to want the house with the biggest pool” – how sad is that? And if you think of ‘sad’ in that context, it fits.

.

And with “You know” I’m definitely siding with Player. I LOVE this tune and it’s my second favourite song from the album. I’ve not heard the original from which Prince based this song – which puts me more at an advantage for appreciation and I’m not a modern R&B fan at all, but the production on this I think is fantastic – especially on headphones. It’s sexy as hell and I just love the whoozy, spacey feel to it all as voices, lyrics and effects float, whoosh and swirl round in, out, backwards and up in it’s dreamlike fantasia. It certainly fulfils it’s place on the album, audio-conceptually (did I say that right? - oh I dunno - you know what I mean).

Robert Christgau, who usually really likes Prince is not fond of the new album. He likes only FunkNRoll and Breakfast.

Jim Deragotus hates it. Says he hasn't had a good album in twenty years, typical bullshit.

All you others say Hell Yea!! woot!
