Of all the instruments that Prince plays, the bass is the one constant where we have the most questions about who is playing it on some recordings. Pretty much since the beginning.

I believe Prince is playing it because it's a rebellious act against the rest of the track. No one else would play that basslne against the rest of the song. Add to that the excessive runtime of the track (Prince wouldn't allot that much time for a subordinate) and Prince's proclivity for falling in love with a riff or lick to the point that he feels the part IS the song. We don't know for sure, but it just seems like it has to be Prince playing that bassline.

True. When some element is used to provide such a big contrast with the rest of the track then it's usually played by Prince. That and it being placed so high in the mix.

I think it sounds like his playing anyway.

That's definitely Prince.
