* The pics on this thread evoke or remind me of how it often looked during the Purple Rain tour, especially the "Take Me w/U" video, which is one of my favorite vids. The "Controversy" breakdown is killer. Mid-way through the Purple Rain tour, his hair was often more of a frizzy 'fro perm than a well-kempt perm. Even on these two pics, it seems as if the left side is "swept back" with the right side being pulled over closer to the eye and side of the face, much in that Purple Rain era style. Whether it's Dirty Mind or Controversy or any other era, Prince's hair has always transitioned from tightly symmetrical to wildly asymmetrical, which is why I don't get all the fuss. And, again, I don't know/care if it is a wig, but I just wouldn't be surprised. Few men his age have a full head of hair, but then, again, he could be one of those few. Yet, for me, few people can rock as many wild styles as Prince. One of my all time favorite pics is a circa 1990/91 photo in which he's making that transition from Graffiti Bridge to Diamonds and Pearls, and he's wearing a black suit with white shirt, standing on a black and white tile floor. His hair is permed but wild not quite the typhoon of Diamonds and Pearls but not as free-flowing as Graffiti Bridge. And, as different as that style is, I can dig the 'fro as well. But, again, for me, Prince is a pie chart with many slices. Some people fixate on one slice whereas I can enjoy the variety of the entire pie. It's like when we have threads on choosing a favorite era. I don't really have one because, as you know, early in his career Prince changed/evolved/transitioned at the speed of light from one style to the next, and I just enjoyed each new thing.

I love the evolution, there were some more boring periods. didn't like the D&P/Love Symbol look. too tailored. As Freakily messy as it looked I appreciate the Gold look, Emancipation-boring, NPS -cool, Rave diverse and one of my favorites, but the music hardly. the 2000s had a lot of the same look for a long stretch of time, same hair style same type of suites
My favs Dirty Mind 1999 Purple Rain ATWIAD Parade SOTT Lovesexy/Batman NPS Rave

Lawd, if some fans get that bothered by Prince rockin' his natural texture, then can you imagine the reaction if Prince went bald? Lol. Fans will be begging that he puts on a wig.

Sweet baby Jesus, how I love Prince with long hair I once saw someone post on here something like 'Prince with long hair and a beard will always make a bitch wet'. It's true tbh.

Yes, It didn't change much the outfits and hair 2001-2009 Maybe he became more 'conservative' after his JW conversion kicked in

What age group are you? I notice that men from times like the 1940s-1970s were very much into detailed commentary on another guys look and style. Men during that period were very much into looks. That whole 'Metrosexual' idiocracy never made sense. If I walked out with something out of place and my friends brothers father uncles etc did not say soemthing, that would be an issue. My father was also military, and my mom made it his responsibity to teach us how to take care of ourselves from washing to iron our clothes and putting things together. My parents were/are stylish. My father still when I go visit will be sitting in his dress pants and shirt or ironed jeans and polo shirt or nice sweaters
. With Prince from the beginning it is clear he is about his look. Any fan denies that, is missing part of the mystery of the man. The style the moves the look etc has always been 100% along with the music from Prince the Time, Sheila E the Family etc Prince is the only real entertainer I'm really into, I collect live shows, unreleased stuff, photos of the times etc the background of songs, lyrics, co-writers, musicians who performed on, engineers etc

My parents are in that age group and as a man I heard it all the time I mean a lot of mothers take it upon themselves to teach/dress/groom their sons My mother left that to my father. And that made a difference in my outlook because he was into his outward look as well. Uncles too They are suburban urbanites, they lived well partied etc when they step out they step out Men do care about their looks and we do talk about it. Not like women will but just in commentary, Critique also jokes. Of course it's generally with people we know, we never sit around talking about random men. No I don't hear 50+ guys talking about sneakers, but I do hear them talking about shoes dress shoes Stacey Adams etc . younger guys are into sneakers cleaning them polishing them displaying them. Each generation is definately into themselves. Sometimes in bad ways like wanting to display their underwear. . No it is clear he still cares about his appearance, whether the look works or not, he is trying something. There are photos from some of my favorite eras that I think he missed the mark on that one. I remember that Welcome 2 Australia photo of him with the very short fro and the sword. Just certain photos miss the mark. Or when he went on the view sporting the short fro, those yellow pants and that huge jacket. I shook my head at that lol it was messy.

Questlove conditions, moisturizes, gets his ends trimmed and keeps a pick on hand to tighten up his 'fro as needed. Please Prince, go all Questlove on my ass. That'll certainly teach me! I knew from the start that I loved you with all my heart.

* In The Lyrics of Prince, I like that the author discusses Prince as a dandy in its socio-political connotation and how his hair and clothing seemed to be designed to supplement, mirror, or highlight the theme or movement of each album or period. So, as someone else stated, Prince has always used fashion to convey his messages as well as merely to garner attention. Like he said in "What's my Name," "You wouldn't have drank my coffee if I wouldn't given you cream" or something like that. So, on the one hand, while it is the music and lyrics that I love, I've always been conscious that his fashion (hair, clothing, make-up) is as much an artistic statement as the music and lyrics. The Lyrics of Prince even includes an interview with Dr. David Cornberg who is a noted semiotician who specializes in how people's outward appearance is often an attempt to make meaning or statement. So, on some level, especially if one is analyzing/deconstructing Prince as an artistic and cultural icon, there is no way to do so fully without addressing his outward appearance. * Yet, to my father who is 68 and his friends, all of whom were active in the Civil Rights Movement, being arrested several times for registering people to vote and other activities, fashion was as important to them. Be it mainstream culture or counter-culture, his friends understood that what one wears makes some statement on some level about who they are or are striving to be. And, being a part of the Black Power arm of the Civil Rights Movement, clothing and hair were very important to them, and that perspective was passed to me. So, while I may not have daily fashion conversations with my friends regarding their daily dress, we do discuss issues like how self-hatred among African people manifests itself in their hair and clothing choices as well as in their behavioral choices. And, like OldFriends4sale, I may have family and friends who may be a bit more keen on this notion of fashion as a socio-political statement so I don't know how I would compare to others who may not think about fashion as a socio-political statement. But, I've never started a thread about Prince's clothes or hair. I commented on this thread because I find it odd/interesting that whenever Prince's aesthetic seems to move toward a more African aesthetic there are always people on this site who have problems with that. And, as the pictures of Questlove that you posted clearly indicate, there is no way the OP can be cool with Questlove's asymmetrical hair style and have issues with Prince's current hair style unless the OP thinks that asymmetrical African styled hair is cool for anyone but Prince. * Ultimately, one of Prince's long-time themes or motifs has remained individuality or doing what is right or best for oneself, and his fashion has always seemed to mirror that. Even when Prince has those fashion periods that many find too conservative, I love it because I love a variety of fashion styles and because I love that Prince is going to do what he likes even if it pisses off his own fans. Who else would write a song to his fans telling them to eff-off?

Oh hell yes! I most certainly do! By extreme glaring contrast, Prince's 'fro looks very dry, lopsided and frankly, quite..."disheveled".
My problem isn't that he's wearing a 'fro. My problem is that his 'fro is freaking jacked, when I happen to KNOW- even though I don't know him personally - HE of all people is able and capable of doing MUCH better than what's been recently wtinessed and I have not one damn problem saying so! [Edited 11/24/14 16:15pm] I knew from the start that I loved you with all my heart.

Upon looking at Questlove's hair, it dawned on me what accoutrement Prince is missing - a pick jutting out the side of his damn head. His fro as it stands now is like a face missing a nose. Prince needs a pick! That would really make some people lose their sh*t.
