It's impossible to measure how much of a fan someone is. I'm a James Brown fan. I own 4 of his albums, and don't know too much about all of his discography. I still consider myself pretty damn hardcore when it comes to some of his music. Especially his heavy funk from the very late 60s to early 70s. When Bootsy, Wesley, Stubblefield, the Collinses etc. helped constructing the funk. A true James Brown fanatic would laugh at me. Also some people are fan of the music, and doesn't really care about lyrics or less important titles. These fans are the easiest for us to say lack fan points. However musically speaking they might be even bigger fans, they just don't care about superficial stuff that will make them socially accepted in the fan community. All they care about is the music. I seriously think these guys are some of the most hardcore fans when it comes to music alone.

It's not that some people don't care about unreleased music, it's that they want to get on their high horse and be seen to not care about unreleased music. Which really is just about "Maybe if I say I'm against listening to unreleased stuff, Prince will see it and I'll be the next Mayte...." daydreaming batting eyes

I guess being a superfan should require one to get excited by subpar material, and flawed recordings, but I also think the super fans are can admit a fair amount of Prince's body of work, including the rare and unreleased isn't going to interest a lot of great fans, at this point.

I often hear from people who say they are hardcore Prince fans but either are unaware of his amazing unreleased stuff (studio tracks and live shows) or openly admit they have no interest in it. This blows my fucking mind. Look, I understand that some people don't have access to sources of unreleased material. And this isn't about proving who's a "bigger fan." It's just that his unreleased material and live shows are such an integral part of getting into Prince. If you love his music and consider yourself a hardcore fan, how can you not want more?

I consider myself hardcore however I am not really interested in the unreleased stuff. The stuff I do hear is pretty bad, which makes me understand why he hasn't released it, or it's in such bad quality, listening is not enjoyable.

Stymie, there's a lot of fluff and garbage, but oh man, there is some GOOD shit that had gone unreleased. Songs that rank up with some of his greatest released material. And more recent leaks have given us some of these songs in stellar quality. It's like seeing deleted scenes from your favorite movie or listening to a commentary track. Go deep! biggrin

Sadly, he probably also doesn't want a bunch of his classic material out there either. Too risqué now. It offends his morals.

I have no idea how long youve been a Prince fan for? but,

Fans that were Hardcore in the early 80's

WENT CRAZY whenever we got another piece to the Prince puzzle!!!

He wasnt Normal! *today i realise he was probably trying to get noticed/attention.

You never saw him laugh or wear anything normal people wore..

he didnt do interviews..

and Bootlegs were NEW!

ie: Previously Unheard of Music by an artist that somehow seemed to make an album every year. (largely on his own)

Tour the album.. Come up with Amazing side projects like the Time..

Make most of their music himself..

along with Shelia E.. Vanity 6.. all these people were Huge back then..

ie: Posters on teenagers walls like "rihanna" would be today.. AND..

None of these people came close to the impact & influence that Prince had!

Michael Jackson even got worried! lol

I could go on.. but, IMO

Listening to Unreleased boots today isnt what it was when you were THE SH--T! if you had a 6th generation copy of the Black album on Cassette!

Exactly! They maybe too sexually suggestive. Could be a MAJOR reason why he hasn't released them to the public. The Jw's wouldn't approve. Luckily as prolific & gifted as he is. He can continue to create new material or re-edit the sexually suggestive old material in the vault. Eye personally think his new material is just as good as the old from the 80's! Don't really care what others think here. Which is why Eye won't be driven away from here by the fairweathers..

Eye will stay here 4EVER to spread positive vibes & LOVE4ONEANOTHER...

Listen, I am a hardcore Prince fan, however, for a period of time, before internet access, was unable to get his unreleased tracks. However, in the last ten years, I have amassed a nice collection of all of his unreleased tracks. It may be that some fans aren't able to procure some of these gems...nod

Some pass on bootlegs because of the moral issues. I know some that travel to Paisley Park and during tours skip city to city for as many shows as possible. I would call them hardcore, they have everything released and the extreme hard to find merch. They pass on bootlegs. I actually knew two lesbians from the Carolinas that were like that and they would preach about the evils of bootlegs. They got into with a prominent bootleg guy at PP at one of the Celebrations. There feeling is that bootlegs somehow would hurt Prince's bottom line. Bootlegger dude believe and wanted to share with fans everything for free and that did no harm to Prince. At one point it was harder to trade but now with internet people can download all of Sabotage cat in a couple hours or so if they know how to. At one point bootlegging was big business but not anymore. I just hope the hardcore fans do not just download the flac or mp3 of the official releases from torrents. If you enjoy and have a substantial amount of boots I think you owe it to Prince to at least support the latest releases by making a purchase of officially released material. IMHO. [Edited 11/21/14 4:03am]

I agreed. I have PURCHASED all official released Prince CDs.

I guess if one chooses to hear all P's released material and purposefully ignore all the outtakes and live shows that are widely circulating, feel free. But no one can tell me that "Prince doesn't want the material out there." Not when he spent 25% or more of the Lovesexy tour playing songs from an album he pulled.

That's like a vegan traveling the world to speak on the virtues of their lifestyle choice and handing out flyers about how great hamburgers taste.
