On the subject of bootlegs - to try and collect them all could drive you bananas! And surely make you broke. I have a shit-ton of boots and I haven't spent a dime in years. I should add: I refuse to pay bootleggers. I give my Prince money to Prince. What he releases, I buy. "Drop that stereo before I blow your Goddamn nuts off, asshole!"

Yes I'm sure you do. I just mean that to want to collect boots (free or otherwise) could trigger a compulsion.

depends. i am a hardcore fan. i love the released and the unreleased as well as bootlegs. HOWEVER, i'm not one who is still in hopes for a Revolution reunion or shun his current work in favor of remasters (that we probably aren't getting) of albums we already have. we know most of the stuff from 78-88 is better than say 2000-2014 but there's plenty of stuff to choose from. it all comes down to preference and taste. all of this stuff is subjective. i want unreleased stuff but that isn't my main focus.

He doesn't perform unreleased material that often. I've seen him nearly 100 times and I can't think of one song I've heard that hasn't been released. I've seen him do a lot of songs before they were released, or first time performances, but none that were never released. I know he has performed some, like Electric Intercourse, God Is Alive, and snippet of Moonbeam Levels, but it is pretty rare. TRUE BLUE

I witnessed him, at one of the early 2007 London shows, perform "1,000 Hugs and Kisses". In an arena with 25,000 people! I reckon less than a dozen of us there knew the song!

I think it was somewhere during the 1996-1998 period where Prince said he didn't mind the sharing of the stuff, just not the selling of it.

There was a time when I wanted everything, official and unofficial, and my vast collection is a product of that. However, a couple of things changed for me. As I got older, I had more responsibilities, which meant that I didn't have the time or money to chase Prince bootlegged material. Also, when it comes to unreleased stuff, I've always been more of a live (video and audio) bootleg fan than a studio bootleg fan, and that includes Eighties material. To be honest, I've often been disappointed or unmoved by most (eighty-five percent) studio bootlegs. My usual reaction after hearing a studio bootleg is, "I now know why it didn't make the album." So, today, I rarely chase/seek unreleased studio stuff. And, while I have all of the live video and audio I desire, right up to the 2013 LOL Tour, with Prince clamping down on the internet, which doesn't really bother me, it now requires too much effort, especially since, again, my life has way more responsibilities than it had thirty years ago. So, unless a studio bootleg just falls in my lap, I'll enjoy officially released studio. But, if there is a tour that includes lots of songs from AOA and PlecElec, I might be able to find the energy to search the internet for that.

I know right? I remember in the early days (late 80s) being thankful for even the bad quality boots. Of course, in this 'brand new age' I've become a lot more picky. hehe "The password is what."

Nothing can compare to the time when you rushed out to buy new Prince material and then you could search through record shops and happen upon some odd Prince bootlegs. I think my first were the Black Album and something called Jewel Box or something like that. You felt like the only one in the world who had it - and it did not matter if it was low sound quality.
I can understand nowadays if people don't give a shit about unreleased stuff.

I happily paid $78 at a local wrecka stow for a Japanese import laser-freakin-disc of Sign O' the Times. Still have it. "The password is what."

That´s exactly the way I see it, too. If it wasn´t for bootleg material, I never would have become the fan that I am today. I go to as many concerts as I can when he´s here, I´ve been to Paisley Park lots of times and even to one of the celebrations, and I buy all his official releases. And of course I´d buy every legit release of the bpotleg material that I already have, even if the boots are of good sound quality. My interest in bootlegs does not hurt Prince´s bottom line, on the contrary, it ignited and strengthened my desire to spend money on Prince. So I don´t really understand why he´s so strongly against them but I respect his opinion. Still....bootlegs are partly responsible for me being into Prince´s music. I understand that Prince, as an artist, does not want us to own material that he did not officially release, just like a painter does not want peopel to own paintings that he never intended to sell or be released.
- Franz Kafka, the great writer , never wanted his material to be released and even said so in his last will.....but his buddy Max Brod ignored his last wish, otherwise we probably wouldn´t even know he was, except for a few short stories. " I´d rather be a stank ass hoe because I´m not stupid. Oh my goodness! I got more drugs! I´m always funny dude...I´m hilarious! Are we gonna smoke?"

I am one who would like to have all of the unreleased stuff (and have some subset of it), but with all of the other things going on in my life (own a business, have 6 kids, etc), there's not enough time to keep tracking them down.

No Prince bootlegs? Then you're not a hardcore Prince fan.

For a long time I had no interest in unreleased boots (live or studio). Here is what it was for me: -
1. You don't know what you are missing if you don't have it. -
2. The bigger issue was sound quality. Scratchy subpar level sounding stuff (no matter how amazing) bothers me to no end. It taints the experience. It also created misplaced resentment towards Prince. Like, how can "Moonbeam Levels" not be worth a pristine and official audio release? "New Power slide...."

KingSausage said: I often hear from people who say they are hardcore Prince fans but either are unaware of his amazing unreleased stuff (studio tracks and live shows) or openly admit they have no interest in it. This blows my fucking mind. Look, I understand that some people don't have access to sources of unreleased material. And this isn't about proving who's a "bigger fan." It's just that his unreleased material and live shows are such an integral part of getting into Prince. If you love his music and consider yourself a hardcore fan, how can you not want more? I consider myself a hardcore fan, but the unreleased stuff seems so hard to find unless you know the right folks on the Org. Every once in a while I'll search for some boots, find a few occasionally, but it seems way harder than it should. I do have the Work though which has a great deal so I can at least follow many discussions related to outtakes

I guess you have to hear the bootlegs to understand your being baffled. Prince has released tons of music officially and if you own all of it, I would call you a hard core fan. I consider myself a hard core Prince fan and have no desire to own every mix or version of a song [That takes a way from the enjoyment of the music. I guess good things will come to me when I'm good and ready.]. For instance, the first time I heard Crystal Ball was when Prince released it. I'm glad he did, because I love it. Had he not-I would probably never had heard it. I'm okay with not hearing songs I don't even know about. 99.9% of everything I say is strictly for my own entertainment
