Baffled by self-identified hardcore fans who don't care about unreleased stuff I often hear from people who say they are hardcore Prince fans but either are unaware of his amazing unreleased stuff (studio tracks and live shows) or openly admit they have no interest in it. This blows my fucking mind. Look, I understand that some people don't have access to sources of unreleased material. And this isn't about proving who's a "bigger fan." It's just that his unreleased material and live shows are such an integral part of getting into Prince. If you love his music and consider yourself a hardcore fan, how can you not want more? Then they are softcore fans if they pass on th chance to at least hear stuff like All My Dreams, Electric Intercourse, Just My Imagination, etc. Anything pre-Batman and unreleased IS historic or nearly so, whether it's terrific or just ok due to Prince present and future status as one of the single most important musicians of the last 50 years, excluding jazz and classical musicians.

Then there are teen-agers who admit they don't even have half of the hundreds of official released songs/albums, leaked outtakes and live bootlegs available and contact you asking you if by any chance u know how to get in touch with the "elite" collectors because they badly need to put their hands on uncirculating outtakes NOW, i.e. before having everything else that's out there It's a strange community this Prince fandom, hell yeah it is A COMPREHENSIVE PRINCE DISCOGRAPHY (work in progress ^^): https://sites.google.com/...scography/

Some pass on bootlegs because of the moral issues. I know some that travel to Paisley Park and during tours skip city to city for as many shows as possible. I would call them hardcore, they have everything released and the extreme hard to find merch. They pass on bootlegs. I actually knew two lesbians from the Carolinas that were like that and they would preach about the evils of bootlegs. They got into with a prominent bootleg guy at PP at one of the Celebrations. There feeling is that bootlegs somehow would hurt Prince's bottom line. Bootlegger dude believe and wanted to share with fans everything for free and that did no harm to Prince. At one point it was harder to trade but now with internet people can download all of Sabotage cat in a couple hours or so if they know how to. At one point bootlegging was big business but not anymore.
I just hope the hardcore fans do not just download the flac or mp3 of the official releases from torrents. If you enjoy and have a substantial amount of boots I think you owe it to Prince to at least support the latest releases by making a purchase of officially released material. IMHO. [Edited 11/21/14 4:03am] What are you outraged about today? CNN has not told you yet?

I would never not buy one of Prince's official albums. Even for his protégés and side acts, if I could buy it from official sources (The Time, Sheila E from Amazon...or the NPG albums from NEWFUNK) I did. Even though I have OOP protege albums from unofficial sources, I would buy them if they were in print again. To sum: I'm fucking awesome. Spelling error!? Any who they were sweet girls. I think they had the chain hat as well, lucky ones. But yeah, no boots but hardcore's all way. I personally have no dilemma with bootlegs, not in 2014. I think though in 1990s some collectors would also sell for profit. Nowadays that is likely impossible? What are you outraged about today? CNN has not told you yet?

Anyways, way cool chicks. We were at an after party once and I remember Prince showed up and about 100 people crowded him and after a few minutes he retreated. They "got it" and sat back knowing that if people didn't crowd him he would likely hang. They were faithful, hardcores that hated the money aspect of bootlegs. The devoted and got to respect. I don't travel city to city like I once did but it is cool when you start to see the same faces or when you see someone at a show and they remember you from Paisley Park and you start up friendships through email. I would call that a type of hardcore! I don't even consider myself that anymore but there was a time. I just don't like to leave the house much. I think they would just live in the moment and enjoy it in the now if he played unreleased. What are you outraged about today? CNN has not told you yet?

Is it like having your favourite restaurant, going there for wonderful food again and again. And then someone finds you in the backalley, rummaging through the garbage cans, trying to find left-overs and pieces of the notorious creme brulee that had the wrong colour. That would be hardcore indeed
A useless simile (I know), that doesn't even apply to me (been digging CD 1 of Blast From The Past 2 a lot!). But it might be a possible explanation why some real and proper fans prefer only the official servings?

I do have more than half of the officially released songs/albums I just don't download full albums because their isn't a Prince album in which I enjoy every song. It's only 2000+ albums I haven't really delved into. I've heard the majority of studio outtakes but I find it hard to enjoy things that aren't in a good quality even if I enjoy the songs. But yeah I only have a few editions of citylights so their isn't a lot i've heard in terms of liveshows but i do worry that their all in a horrible quality from the 90's live boots ive heard. I'm feeling a bit fammy™

I'll admit I really want to listen to the unreleased material and have listened to a huge amount in my collection...
However there are probably more unrleased material here I haven't listened to, and it gets frusturating how this site says we can not solicite for boots, yet we get thread after thread of people obtaining the material discussing about it when most members can't obtain them or search and come up empty handed.
Personally thats why I don't "care" or discuss most of his unreleased stuff nor reply to those type of threads.

I don't think it makes you less of a fan because you can't get (or don't want) the unreleased stuff. Prince should be judged by what he feels is good enough to release.
On the subject of bootlegs - to try and collect them all could drive you bananas! And surely make you broke.

The vast majority of those that collect boots do support Prince by purchasing all of his released material. And, as a recent thread showed, most of us are happy to buy official releases of material we already have bootlegs of. Don't hate your neighbors. Hate the media that tells you to hate your neighbors.
