I've never heard of Steve Albini, and "his music is poison" is obviously highly subjective, but apart from that statement he does make some reasonable points.

Oh yeah! I certainly agree with the last bit.

He is a bad speaker, though; even Prince can do better.

Steve Albini is a producer/engineer. He's worked with a lot of people. He's also a cantankerous punk rock dude. I'm not sure he's trolling, though. I think he's pretty grumpy in real life, too.

He worked with some big folks. He did Nirvana's 'In Utero' album. He's known for making confrontational music and that seems to match his attitude. He's fair, though. Just free with his opinion which he will usually admit is subjective.

Here's what a good friend had to say about Albini: "The one thing in common for all people like Albini, who say that everything should be public domain or that no one should have exclusive control over any intellectual property, is that they don't own anything worth a shit." Also, "I'd like to see his reaction if he wrote a song that became a huge hit but didn't get paid anything for it because the publisher and record label decided it should belong to everyone." Pretty funny. Very accurate.

I love Albini. He can be abrasive but he is also a very cool dude. He's done tons of cool music starting with his first band Big Black through his current band Shellac. He is mostly a producer though, as stated already he has produced Nirvana, he did a couple Robert Plant & Jimmy Page albums. Some other big names but mostly countless lesser known punk, alternative, rock whatever bands. I like this article. The thing about Prince was just a throwaway statement. Obviously he doesn't care for Prince and was (rightfully) upset with the vehemence that Prince went after anything on youtube or anywhere to the point of suing someone whose baby was dancing to a Prince song.

So I have a personal encounter with Albini that kind of confirms this.

About 9 years ago, my band and I were rehearsing at a place called Fortress Studios in London. It's rehearsal rooms downstairs and a studio upstairs, and we used to hang out there quite regularly.

One day we'd been rehearsing for about 3 hours when one of the guys that worked there walked into our room and signalled for us to stop playing.

With a very sheepish look on his face, this poor kid says to us "Guys, I'm really sorry about this. But Steve Albini is mixing an album upstairs and he just yelled at me about the noise down here, would it be possible for you guys to rehearse a bit more quietly?"

Needless to say we thought this was absolutely hilarious - Mr. Punk Rock himself wants US to make less noise? But out of respect for the poor guys working there we did drop our volume a notch.

Anyway, I have a modicum of respect for the guy since In Utero is one of my favorite albums, ever, but seriously, if he wants to talk smack about Prince then that's just hilarious. Prince has produced more great albums than Albini ever will.

He makes some valid points about how music was controlled by large music companies that controls what albums get shelved in record stores. With the internet, music can get released on a global scale, to anyone that wants to hear it. Regardless if their signed to a major record label. He's 100% right on that! He takes some nasty swipes at Prince because let's face it, Prince has been incredibly anti-internet. Remember, "The Internet is Dead", and then sic'd his lawyers on anyone that dared to play his classic music on youtube. Prince now seems to have come around to the benefit of the internet, but for decades he's been against it. I love Prince, but let's not be blind to his fuck ups. He has fucked up royally (no pun intended) in quite a few instances.

Music sales are at a all time low. If record companies are not making money the artist are not getting any either. All P wants to do is get paid for his work like anyone who own intellectual property or actually works. The only reason this moron is saying this stuff is because he has not created anything that anyone wants.

You see P's stuff on the YOUTUBE now because he owns it. How many artist can say that?

What is wrong with an artist earning $200k a year rather than $2m? The public were forced to pay billions through the restriction of entertainment.

No matter how much Prince moans about the new system, there is more freedom for artists now; the very thing he thought he was fighting for in the 90's. He just doesn't like it because he comes from an era where he got much more money for his work.

So, let me get this right; Prince or anybody else who creates something doesn't have the right to control how it's used or sold? Man, please. The only person complaining about how Prince or anybody else controls what they created is somebody without the talent to create anything. A person who creates something is not under any obligation to share their work with the world. Now, of course, I may think that Prince may be missing some opportunities, but if Prince doesn't want those opportunities or if he only wants those opportunities under his own terms, then what exactly is Prince missing? And clearly, Prince ain't trying to be no broke ass famous person. So, this whole "Prince is missing out on gaining new fans" logic is bs. Given the fact that the internet has killed record sales, what has Prince to gain by allowing his work to be stolen on the internet without some about of resistance from him. Mr. Steve who-ever-the-hell-he-is should be solely concerned with what he can do with his creations and stop worrying about what other people do with their creations. And for those people who think that the internet needs more art to be stolen, y'all are free to create more.
