Rock star Prince and 800 friends

held a purple masquerade at the

Prom Cneter in St. Paul to celebrate

his 27th brirthday. Prince flew in

people from all over the United States,

said Harry Givens, owner of the Prom Center.

"It's great," Given said. "It's a masquerade and

the ballroom's never been decorated like this

in my 30 years." Inside were giant spiral purple staircases,

two big brass beds,

glittery booths, candies everywhere, mirrors,

mannaquins, international food stations, pinball machines

and a "carnival atmosphere," according to one guest

That sounds absolutely fantastic.. Such a shame technology wasn't what it is today and we have no record of this event...I wonder who won the best costume, and what they wore?

Another new song follows as Prince And The Revolution are joined by St. Paul Peterson, Susannah Melvoin and Jerome Benton from The Family for an over 14 minute version of their song "Mutiny". St. Paul sings lead on this performance. The Family's one and only album would not see release until September of that year, so this was another new song to those in attendance.

3. Sometimes It snows In April only Prince, Wendy Melvoin, Lisa Coleman, Sheila E.

.

After a two minute Sheila E. drum solo, the band slows things down for the public premiere of "Sometimes It Snows In April". This song would not see release for almost another year, on the "Parade" album in late March, 1986. It's obvious the song is a work in progress at this point as Prince sings the first two lines of the song, then it becomes an instrumental performance save the chorus which the band has worked out, full lyrics and all. It's a fascinating look at a song in its skeletal form. Prince tells the crowd 'y'all wanna get a drink or something, it's cool', probably aware of the funk explosion they were about to lay on them the rest of the evening.

The first familiar song of the night starts a 30 minute non-stop funk marathon as they kick into "Irresistible Bitch". I simply love the way The Revolution re-worked this song live, usually leading into the unreleased "Possessed" as it does on this night. Eric Leeds and Eddie M. on saxophone add to the massive groove emanating from the stage on this performance. Given his incredible Sign o' The Times and original NPG bands, I think I have underestimated The Revolution over the years and listening to these shows is a great reminder of just how bad-ass this band was.

"Possessed" then runs into a brief workout on The Time's "The Bird" featuring Jerome Benton helping with the chants. This leads into the seemingly improvised "Drawers Burnin'", a hilarious song with Prince singing in his 'Morris Day voice' and Benton again backing him up on the chant. This song has also been referred to as "Burn It" in the past, but that seems to be more from crappy recordings of this show making it hard to tell what they were saying. Prince starts by singing 'Asshole tried to take my picture, kicked him in the neck! Sued me for a million dollars I said what the heck!' as Benton chants 'Drawers Burning' in between each line. Musically the song is little more than a popping bassline and drums, but it is still funky as hell. 'Good drawers hard to find, bad ones follow you home', too funny. Prince asking a woman in the audience 'Do your drawers burn honey? Sing!" kills me as well. I highly doubt this song was ever considered to be recorded, it all seems pretty much made up on the spot.

8. Holly Rock Prince & the Revolution + Sheila E (timbales) Eddie M & Eric Leeds (sax)

The night closes with a 13 minute version of another Prince written track given to Sheila E., "Holly Rock". Sheila rocks the timbales on this performance, again a debut as this song would not be released until September on the "Krush Groove" soundtrack. In all, six of the eight songs played on this night were unreleased at the time and two have still never seen the light of day.

It's a shame Prince pretty much cut out these birthday shows after the following year's concert in Detroit, which was far less interesting than the '84 and '85 Minneapolis shows as far as material played. They were loose, fun and drowning in new, rare material, a fan's dream. Although a soundboard recording would be wonderful to see surface some day, at least fans finally have a decent , highly listenable, totally enjoyable quality recording from this 1985 classic.

Interesting too, as you can hear The Rev during a transitional period. Not quite yet the expanded Counter-Revolution, but starting to include new players (Eric Leed and members of Sheila E's band) and exploring a new aesthetic. Some grest long jams aswell, and (I must admit) Wendy is actually funky on this

The long jams are really grooving and there's a certain energy radiates from every note. There's a reason he wrote his best music with these guys - really something special. Mutiny is the standout for me, closely followed by the u Sometimes It Snows.

I wish there was a picture so we could see how the band, the audience and the venue looked.

Love this show, he's in fine form and he was in a good mood.

Eddie M is the highlight, this guy could play some mean sax. Prince needed to keep him on, put him in the Revolution. You can also see the precursor of the whole Parade type feel coming on in this show. It musthave been great to have this groovier and looser feel than the rigid and strutured Purple Rain tour shows he had just come off.

Yep, Eddie was the veteran sax man at this time, Eric was the new kid on the block

In a lot of ways very similar to what we hear on the SOTT tours, I think she did this drum solo during her Romance 1600 concerts

@ 1:40 it closes with a synth part that sounds like an ending from something on Controversy or 1999 I'm trying to remember what song Automatic or International Lover

and St Paul then says "Sheila E"

This show does exist on 4DaFunk Prince and the Revolution 27 v.2. The sound is good for such an old show.

Very nice this show is out now. Its always very interesting to notice when Prince is more relaxed and just having fun during a show like celebrating his birthday to see how the show sounds then and what songs and type of mood he's in that night.

I'm still listening to this but as of right now even though its still early in the show a few things do stand out:

Sheila is tight as hell on those drums. She's killing them.

Eddie M. is totally killing the sax to this point. You can understand after listening

to him blow how Prince would really have to get someone like Eric Leeds to

replace him. Anyone else would have been shown up!!

Wendy is sounding funky on the guitar. She seems like she was hanging right in

there with the rest of them, even by herself. She was playing what sounded like was rhythm guitar and not much lead but sounding good.

Also so funny to not really hear Prince play any guitar to this point. It was his birthday so I can understand I suppose. Just seems funny.

They still sound good without two guitars though.

Anyhow though those are my thoughts so far...just got to the little snippet of Sometimes...I know he didn't do the whole thing though. Still sounds beautiful.
