I WANT to like every new Prince album. I am biased that way. But my bias for good music trumps that. I said it from the start that whatever WB executives thought it a good idea to release these two albums have no business being in the music industry in the first place. It didn't take a genius to see these two albums had zero chance of recouping any monies invested in their release.
After years of mediocre releases, my guess is Prince still believes creating dumbed-down music is his ticket to once again reaching the masses. Which either says how out of touch he is, or worse, how he feel about the masses. I mean why else go through all the publicity? Why else reach out to mass media?
Prince received far more exposure than any new release could hope for. It was mentioned prominently on most media outlets, TV, print and online. He received a spot on SNL. The promotion and publicity was massive. It was not a question of exposure, it was a question about quality the work. Exposure is one thing, getting people to want to buy it is another.
Yes it's also due to today's music environment, but there are still artists SELLING millions of copies of their new albums. A testament to this is how consumers, who profess to HATE Taylor Swift, were happily shaking it off to her new album. When you can reach beyond your target demographic and reach those who could care less about you.
A testament is Hozier, an unknown artist that reached star level exposure, SNL the whole nine yards without the benefit of having laurels to sit on. THAT'S an achievement. It always comes down to the product. That's the bottom line.

I bet they're shitting rainbows that they don't have to promote some lame album alongside a classic. Those kind of things never work out: the classics show how bad the new stuff is, and the new stuff pollutes the love for the classic.
" and the new stuff pollutes the love for the classic." When you type stuff like this I hope it is just the drugs that are making you do it.

AT THE SAME TIME. Sheesh, is it so bloody hard to learn the CONTEXT? We were talking about the two being released AT THE SAME TIME.
.
But I'm guessing you missed that considering you were on that high horse of yours. © Bart Van Hemelen

They were simply appeasing Prince. They dumped those albums with as little as possible involvement from them onto the public, and told Prince to get his ass in gear and promote them. They'd match his investment -- and he did zilch.

Have I got proof of this? Nope. But all signs point to this. © Bart Van Hemelen

Who goes to stores to buy Cd's?
I DO order them through Amazon but mostly everyone downloads.
There is no money in selling CD's anymore unless you sell upwards of a million.
Price has gone on a few shows and promoted his CD. He needs to do more though.
No airplay and no teens buying menas no sales.
Its nt just him either. Billy Idol has a kick ass CD, Lenny has a Great CD!
Culture Club has one coming out but none are getting ANY play. At least here in NYC Area. Its all
Iggy or Grande. Some rap buy the flavor of the week and thats it.
Older artists are getting the shaft in terms of promotion and play.
Besides his CD is NOT the strongest for the common person to want to buy.
yes because you don't go to the store to buy cd's that must mean the whole doesn't either haha wow the ego of some people |

By this comment you are saying he should never record anything new. Wha sort of an artist does not take a step forwrd. This is not 1984 and the new music is selling reasonably well for the climate in the music industry these days and the music has received solid reviews.
You need to learn that no matter how much you think your opinion is the final word it cannot change the facts.
Bart's right but the blind cult Prince followers just can't get it through their heads that Prince is DONE...he's not even half the talent he used to be on the new stuff |

Everyone is complaining that WB isn't marketing AOA and PE. They know know that Prince's market has shrunk considerably. So for them to make money, they knew they could not spend tons of cash on two albums that collectivly that have not even made $1,000,000.
AOA has made $660,000
+
PE has made $330,000
Prince has sold two albums that have not made $1,000,000 yet. So how much profit did WB & Prince make off of these two albums?
In business terms, practically zero.
Lets say this is accurate. Warners had nothing to do with the recording of either album so they only marketed the records on sources they already had(websites and youtube). Prince provided the overhead through NPG or whatever but how would we know what exactly Warners is making off the lease deals? |
