Then you're going to be in for a great night, Sausage. The band is good too.
The thing is, Dylan is doing everything stillwaiting wants Prince to do! [Edited 11/15/14 8:16am]

No shit but this is Prince we are talking about here so get over it! The greatest live performer of our times was is and always will be Prince.
Remember there is only one destination and that place is U All of it. Everything. Is U.

Okay, a serious response this time. Diamonds & Pearls and Musicology showed that if Prince wants to promote an album, he will do so. But everybody knows the slump the music industry is in these days, so doing a big promotional campaign might sell no more than a few thousand albums so maybe Prince doesn't think it's worth it.
And tours don't sell albums. Bob Dylan doesn't tour to sell albums, but because he feels music belongs onstage before an audience. And as for live dvds and such, yes of course we would love those, but once again Prince may feel there is no money to be made there. And that is a shame, because the longer he waits, the less people will be there to buy 'em. [Edited 11/15/14 9:57am]

Good point... Even though Diamonds & Pearls and Musicology weren't the strongest sounding albums, with the proper promotion they were a success.
D&P with the promotion blitz by Warners, the vids, the singles, the Aresenio Performances, etc... D&P sold over 6.4 million world wide.
Musicology 3m worldwide and sold 2m in the U.S. alone.
I agree with proper promotion, videos, singles, performances, Prince could easily have another hit album. Remember Lotusflow3r went GOLD in the U.S. just selling at TARGET. That's pretty incredible.

I remember at the time feeling like Rave had an unusual level of promotion. Has time clouded my memory? "Drop that stereo before I blow your Goddamn nuts off, asshole!"

Rave had a ridiculous amount of promotion, both here and overseas. He even did TRL for chrissakes! He hasn't really promoted anything fervently since Musicology. "That's when stars collide. When there's space for what u want, and ur heart is open wide."

blah blah blah | |

Rave was promoted every way shape or form, the only thing I can say about RAVE was it wasn't a Prince record at all, he was completely out of his element with that era and album...

Many great ideas on your list. But it's just another "if i were Prince"-post. Why can't anyone just let him do his do? just so you can say to that nieghbor of yours, "see, i told ya he was the greatest!" Prince IS the greatest. Why do you feel the need to re-write his history/future movements? Do you have your own regrets? I used to come here to talk to great fans. They are very hard to find at the moment. * I agree with you, but I didn't initially respond because I try not to respond on threads that are not meant for me. I can't complain about others being negative if I'm negative on someone else's thread. There's a lot we could wish for our favorite artist to do, but it's his journey so I just embrace what I like and ignore what I don't like. With the way music sells today, I don't know if any level of promotion would cause either AOA or PlecElec to sell a million copies, and I really like (B+) both albums. Then, again, Prince is batshit crazy so to second guess him is to ask why the crazy man ate peanut butter off his hat rather than on bread or crackers.

The thing is, if you look at my list, NOTHING on it is going to cost him millions. It's pretty much a wash. Even if he did all of that and only got a few extra sales, the push for the shows would be bigger. In no way, shape, or form, would him doing my entire list cause him to lose money if executed correctly. Worst case would be maybe not making that big a difference, but one 78 minute cd over two totalling 93 minutes would have helped in a small way...it's not like he would have to fork over big money to be on Fallon for a week. This is easy stuff to do, but he is not willing to do easy stuff...He'd rather do basically nothing.

Never understood why people get thier knickers in a twist over how Prince promotes himself. The more he puts out, the better as far as I'm concerned and as a fan, I'll always get it so why give a levitating shag how many of the masses know about it. Do I care if he's number 1? No. Am I concerned for his financial security? No. So unless I'm missing out on when he floated on the share market and folks here have a financial stake in his success can someone please explain to me what gives? Here's a scenario. Prince becomes a marketing genius and becomes extremely popular with the masses. Are we all loving that? The fuck we are! If the milk turns out to be sour, I aint the kinda pussy to drink it!

stillwaiting said: Prince has no clue how to promote himself. With absolutely no experience managing an act, and no experience in advertising or promotion, he could have done several things to bring some attention to the project:
2. Make a video for whatever the lead single would be, and promote the heck out of it on You Tube, Facebook, Twitter, A baseball World Series commercial...and maybe an NFL commercial...something..
9. Obvious one: Worked better with Warners to have the Purple Rain remaster out by the end of the summer. And instead of having 5 different versions of the release like some artsts do for reissues..just have a 2 disc deluxe version for $15, and then have a massive Box Set for $100, but make it worth the money. No stupid book...look, I love books, but we have the Purple Rain movie for all of the visuals, and our old Tour Books, etc. Just pack it with extra discs, and DVD. Make somebody go...WOW! I get all this! Not like the Sting box set that came out a few years back with some book, 2 CDs, 1 DVD, and a ridiculous price tag...give value...and make the booklet nice, but not a centerpiece.
10. After about 20 shows of the 90 or so show tour, create a DVD and Blu Ray showcasing the tour, and make it a two disc set: One showing the regular main show, and the bonus disc showing The Time, and 10-15 Prince songs performed rarely.
Pretty much none of these things would ever happen, as Prince's idea of promotion for an album is to do a talk show or two, and then ignore the album forever. Sad, but true.
And for 2015? As the tour winds down, release a box set with all the officially released albums from 78-96 in one huge box set, with bonus discs of all the single mixes, and most of the remixes(We don't need 20 mixes of Gangster Glam), and DVDs of all the videos, and at the same time, just empty the damn vault in another Box Set of 20 or so discs with a bunch of DVDs of live performances, extra videos...
As far as single disc remasters? None. Just make a few 2 Disc versions of the 5 best selling albums. If you want the others, you gotta buy the box sets. Makes perfect sense. Nobody is gonna camp outside Best Buy for a symbol reissue, or as much as it hurts to say it...a Lovesexy or Dirty Mind reissue.

There was no world tour. A quickly trhown together hits and run tour does not count. Playing 2 or 3 shows a night in small rooms does not count. Aftershows? Gone. The albums came to our hands slower than hinted upon by mr Prince. Hinted yes as he never communicates in proper sentences with actual information. (remember him being in London celebrating the release of the 3rdEyeGirl album? The album remained unreleased until the WB thing....) Then for some reason a deal with WB happens. Hoopla over PR without even a proper release date, details over the packacing. Two more recent albums released in cheap manner. Minimal promotion. . Loads of leaks of mostly older material: that made the year nicer. I doubt mr Prince was involved. Pills and thrills and daffodils will kill... If you don't believe me or don't get it, I don't have time to try to convince you, sorry.

Yeah, Prince seems to have a strange fascination with promoting albums that aren't out (yet). Here's what I think of it: what counts for him is the joy, the thrill of creating music. Once an album is out, in his mind it's already old news, so he starts looking for the next thrill. This also explains why he doesn't give a damn about the Purple Rain reissue.
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
Yes, but WB on the other hand does care about the reissue as they want to make money from that. So how and when will they release it? Maybe not in 2014. Maybe not a sa three disc set. Pills and thrills and daffodils will kill... If you don't believe me or don't get it, I don't have time to try to convince you, sorry.

From 2013-14 he had nearly 12 release parties for albums that had not been released. Spending all that time promoting a big bag of NOTHING. Album comes out, and Prince does nothing. The people who went to those "Relase Parties" were there for the event, but he could have just done TV shows the week of release to promote SOMETHING...but no. And this is the first time he ever went on a continuous promo push for something that did not exist. But it is the ten billionth time he ignored a new release....and trust me, he will bitch about them not selling to WB at some point, and will take no responsibility.
