Prince in Q

There's a 20-page special on Prince in Q this month! Yet to read it - but should imagine there'll be something of interest.

I have never been a fan of Q Magazine.

But perhaps I will give it a glance next time I'm in the newsagent.

Gohi

Q and Mojo are probably my two favorite music magazines. It's cool to see Prince get decent coverage in Q for once.

I read it just now in the shop. Didn't see a 20 page special but saw reviews of PE and AOA so maybe it was last month's issue.

Total rubbish.

As expected, Q Magazine, who know absolutely nothing about soul, funk and R&B, shitted on AOA and praised P.E.

Those of us who love both genres of music have almost universally acknowledge the opposite.

But it's to be expected from the magazine who recently stated Kasabian were "the best band in the world"..... LOL

I stopped buying Q in about 1998.

I remember they gave Emancipation a great review.

The 20-page special is in the upcoming issue, out Oct. 28 (Dave Grohl on the cover).

Does your opinion of the mag matter? We know you'll be all over it come the 28th.

Ah ok, that's not the one I saw in the shop today.

This actually could be interesting, hopefully it's not as ridiculous as their reviews were.

the strange thing is, it looks like the same interview they did with him years ago, it uses the same picture. roundabout the world music awards appearance, when the star and bars performance was given! Maybe its just a repeat of that.

Yep, looks like the same interview from July 1994. That would be a very weird thing to do indeed.

It looks like its just an article put together from different articles from over the years. The original interview that this is taken from wasnt 20 pages long. You never know, there could be a new interview on top of this spread!

Seems ok to me.

First 6 pages are a bio from the begnining to 1999.

Next 6 are a reprint from a 1994 interview, which I have read before and have the issue lying around somewhere. It was cool to read again.

Haven't read any more yet but the next bit yet but is 4 pages . Titled The Purple Patch - Purple Rain, Around The World In A Day, Parade, Sign O' Times, Lovesexy. Tom Doyle delves deep into Prince's pimperial period.

Then a page from when Sylvia Patterson met Prince in 1996.

We then have a mini buyers guide with their buying recommendations, 3 essentials, 3 recommended, 2 under 'Go Deeper' and 1 to 'Treat With Care'.

Finally a 2 page bit bringing us up to date.

A nice smattering of photos throughout. Nothing earth shattering in there but really nice to see our man getting some decent coverage in the press. I can't share any of it so please don't ask, it'll be in the shops soon enough smile.

Yeah, Q was only good in spurts, a lot of hit and miss, a lot of rubbish...

Last I heard it was all but shut down, and was going to become a 'lifetsyle'/'culture' magazine, with some elements of music thrown in, but they seem to keep managing to churn it somehow.

I don't buy any music magazines any more. Mojo used to be good but now I'm not a fan, it too has gone downhill I think. The writing is mostly not good, and they recycle the same stories/band bios too much (not entirely their fault, how many earthshattering moments can their be, but still)...

Oh for fuck's sake, so they used a picture from their 1994 feature and you decide that these TWENTY PAGES are the same as that feature? You do realise that magazines often reuse older pictures, right?

.

Sheesh.

Damn. Was hoping this was the first salvo in the promo for PR Deluxe, but this simply seems to be Q magazine needing to fill 20 pages on the cheap. Woudln't be surprised if a lot of that was a rehash of previous articles.

It gets a very brief mention at the end of the last bio piece.

@Bart:

for fuck's sake yourself. I decided what? Did I decide anything? Or did I make a contribution to the curiosity of an (at the time) unsolved question? Just because you have a reputation around here for being an asshole, doesn't mean you can spout off any old jizz that trickles out of your brain. Not sure who you think you are. Read the actual comment I wrote for what it was without your own inflection before you talk to me like that, you imbecile.

Saw the reviews here, they are pretty bad. I think they did not listen with their ears open and the reviewer was probably a non fan or unfamiliar with Prince.

.

Won't see the 20 page special for weeks, as my store had Aug and Sep issues at usual price and the November one airfreighted at the special price of $23.

.

British magazines always take ages to get to NZ, usually 3 months, and they are conveyed by paddle boat I think.

Got some kind of love for you, and I don't even know your name

Q Magazine has permanently sucked. Since Issue 1.
It create the 'bloke music press' to replace the 'artist music press' and this has been so runaway successful a venture that the artists now look like the blokes whose superficial 'haircut' consciousness pervades each and every review, interview and feature.

Prince has been particularly badly served by this 'can't get a shag, wish I was cool like these rockstars' mindset to the order of 'Ooooh look at how weird Prince is but he still gets a shag'

Did I leave anything out?
Didn't think so.
