I'm with you 100%. Absolutely adore I hate U; in fact the whole album is awesome and highly under rated IMO.

I Hate U, this is the best Prince song of the 90s.. Prince 4Ever.

I'm always jealous when people say they are hearing something for the first time. I want to listen to Gold for the first time again. [Edited 11/3/14 0:59am] Everybody stop on the 1...GOOD GOD! Uhh!

WHAT???!!!!
It must have been a good day for you! One of my absolute favs!
And to think so many people didn't give the song a chance at the time (and still) simply because of the title...

Love it. It's so ridiculously over the top. I remember that in the UK it was very well received critically. It was the first NME Single of the Week in years. don't play me...i'm over 30 and i DO smoke weed....

I envy people hearing those songs for the first time. All these songs are pretty much engraved on my brain now, which is cool, but it means one misses those moments of surprise that one can only get with a first listen. I remember listening to that for the first time and expecting it to be an angsty hip-hop jam like "Dig U Better Dead" or something. The perfect song for a naysayer to sing to Prince in the shower, changing a few words here and there.
Even the fact it's over-the-top makes perfect sense.

TGE isn't underrated, it's in every top-10 list of favorite albums on this site Reportedly, Eye Hate U is about Carmen Electra sleeping with Tony M, but IDK if it's true. A COMPREHENSIVE PRINCE DISCOGRAPHY (work in progress ^^): https://sites.google.com/...scography/

One of my favourite Prince songs of all time. I remember going to a small local record shop on the Friday before the single was to be released on the Monday and as I walked in there was music blasting and I quickly realized it was Prince. I stood there frozen listening then the guitar solo at the end kicked in and literally gave me goosebumps. . Luckily the guy let me buy it there and then, even tho it wasn't officially out till the Monday, and I rushed home and played the shit out of it.

I'm partial to the song. It's great, but I think it may have been influenced by this : The Colors R brighter, the Bond is much tighter
No Child's a failure Until the Blue Sailboat sails him away from his dreams Don't Ever Lose, Don't Ever Lose Don't Ever Lose Your Dreams

After TMBGITW this could have been another BIG hit because even without proper promotion it went all the way up to what, 11 or 10 on the Billboard chart. Many people, including non-fans, loved this song back then. Too bad that the problems with WB overshadowed everything back then. A video was made but rarely (or never?) played on TV. I have it on VHS somewhere but I´m not sure if it was ever played. The maxi single was one of his last great maxis with a dope remix, a great instrumental version with Eric Leeds on the saxophone and a decent coversleeve. Great song. I think I saw him perform a little bit of this song during the Gold Experience/Ultimate Live Experience tour but it was only part of a medley. " I´d rather be a stank ass hoe because I´m not stupid. Oh my goodness! I got more drugs! I´m always funny dude...I´m hilarious! Are we gonna smoke?"

OK, so now the chorus is bouncing in my head, I can't stop humming it and I have work to do. The Colors R brighter, the Bond is much tighter

Aerogram said: The perfect song for a naysayer to sing to Prince in the shower, changing a few words here and there.
Even the fact it's over-the-top makes perfect sense. And why exactly are you thinking about naysayers in their showers? I knew from the start that I loved you with all my heart.

ahhh, Memories. I remember the day this came out; I called in sick, went to Tower Records in LA to pick this up. Went home and played it, and played it loud. I remember that when I heard "I Hate U" for the first time, I had to hit replay a number of times just to soak on all of that aural goodness. Neighbors were pissed for a week.

Much as I love The Gold Experience, I have never shared the love for I Hate U. Its so run of the mill in sound. I think many people who love this love Call My Name and Future Soul Song.
Nothing wrong with them, but in that area, I don't think Prince ever moved on and his best were the earlier works likes of Do Me Baby, Scandalous, Insatiable and Adore. .

. I'm not sure why it took so long! I think it's because of the way I'm working through Prince's 90s material... I don't give albums or boots a full, proper listen. . For example, I've heard Diamonds and Pearls all the way through MAYBE once, even though I've played out specific songs like Insatiable, the title track, and Jughead (really!). . I have The Ultimate Beautiful Experience, but there are certain songs I just don't listen to and maybe have never listened to. I think I just went straight for Shhh, listened to that on repeat for ages, and then eventually worked my way to most, but not all, of the others. . I have Emancipation, but I've listened to like 13% of it. . Hah, even when I discovered I Hate U, I didn't download The Gold Experience, I downloaded the maxi single! Maybe I'm worried I won't like the album, or something. I don't know. . It's strange. I give the albums and the boots from the 80s and the 00s full sit-down listens, but I don't do the same for the 90s material... Which is nuts because his band was aaaaaaaawesome in the 90s. . . And it really is a treat to hear a real gem for the first time so late into my prince fandom. I bugged my friends to listen to it, which is something I haven't done in years.

For me this is a classic example of relevant lyrics. It's so on point if you've been in a similar situation. I think he just nailed the pain and love. Many were confussed or thought it silly with the song title and lyrics. But for those of us in that situation...is there a song ever made that is more on point. Okay the Beautiful Ones was on magnificant point too.
Some of his love songs as of late just don't seem to scream that passion. He tries, but it doesn't come off sincere. I think someone really must have jacked his heart to nail I hate U like he did.
One of my favs. | |

Get the CD single and hear all the versions. Extended is awesome. 99.9% of everything I say is strictly for my own entertainment
