AOA is an album i could live without..

The Gold Standard reminds me of vintage Prince -80's..

thats the only reason i like it.

Outstanding track. I've jogged with it in my headphones a few times and the funk does get deeper everytime you listen to it. My fav part is the 'TURN IT UP, LEMME SEE YOUR BODY MOVE'- kicks off a nasty funk groove there. Awesome.

He proves one thing here, that he is just as funky as ever. However it's recycling his old classic party tracks from the 80s a bit too much imo. He could be a bit more loose and playful. It's kind of as if he is trying a bit too hard to be tighter, funkyer, more on point and more over produced than before. On the 1999 album, he sounded a bit more like if he was improvising a bit. The Gold Standard sounds a bit too rehearsed. Still a good song though. But I bet he has a demo thatis even better.

I agree with you...

I think that may be the workflow and sound of digital vs analog hardware, no copying & pasting & tape machines that you may be hearing/feeling... thats what makes this a 'cute' parody of vintage prince funk to me.

Yeah! I mean, it's not that I don't think it's funky or anything. But it doesnt really has the same life to it as his older classics had. The rawness and live feel of the robotic beats like Automatic proves that drum machines doesn't have to make a song sound dead. It's the whole package that matters. How you use it for effect rather than being controlled by it. Prince seems to either let the Pro Tools workflow control him, or maybe he is just doing this too much on autopilot. It's just to easy for him, so he ain't inspired when doing his old style. He seems much more inspired on songs that actually forces him a bit out of his comfort zone.

This is when I first listened to the intricacy of the track on headphones - while jogging with mp3 player. It has some serious Prince stank on it and it is flawless. If Prince did just this for the rest of his life, I wouldn't have a problem with it (though I would miss the full breadth adn depth of his genius).

Yes!

I could reply for several hours about this...

I'll just say.. Thankfully Prince started making albums in the 70s.

The layered vocals don't sound nice.

Its closer to "Life o the Party", than any 80's comparison.

The opening vocal bit is sick, and the last 30 seconds or so, are twisted-cool, but the song itself isn't great. Actually, its not good at all.

Might have been better more sped up. This song need more work and better musicianship, and more thought out.

Yes - amazing how many fans here know how to make Prince records better than the guy who has been doing it for several decades and made himself a legend. lol

It's a futuristic take on one of this trademarked sounds, so of course it sounds like clinical funk -- it's supposed to.

That end dialog is tittilating because it's so....unpolished. You almost think he's going to belch or something--so un-Prince-like.

It DOES have a distinct
"damn baby, how'd you get all THAT in them jeans"
"It wasn't easy"
"I know that's right"

tang.

Indeed-- but who does (always know what's best for themselves)? I think uncertainty and missteps are inherently human.

Indeed. It's Prince trying to imitate the sound of The Time mixed with the sound of The Black Album. It's ersatz funk. It is a typical case where Prince tells something when he should show, but he cannot; he's forgotten how.

He is trying to imitate the sound he created! Good God you are off the meds.

Of course it's funk. It's a very good example of stripped down 80s style funk. Just because you're not fond of it yourself does not make it "not funk".

I don't get the hype for this song, the melody is awkward and the lyrics are wack. It reminds me of all the OMG P IS BACK hype from when 20Ten came out. People drinking that purple Koolaid.

Many people dont know what funk actually is..

In fact i'd suspect that MANY of the people that use the word Funky in (Princeworld) would hear a 'Dance music' ie: House... 4 on the floor type groove & call that Funky.

oh yeah.. Funky House... wink

But that shit aint fonky! lol

The bass is too weak and the singing/chorus is too clean and polished. Its not raw enough. An ok song, but doesnt fit on AOA. I have it in another playlist with other songs he released over the past couple of years such as Groovy Potential, Extraloveable Reloaded, RNR Love Affair, Aint gonna Misss U, Same Page etc. But have removed it from the AOA playlist along with Breakdown.
