File this appearance under trying to do too much and ending up not doing much at all.-Alan Leeds

.

.

When I talked to others who watched the show I got a similar response, that it was too much

Now I always one for doing a big show, but I don't know if I agree or disagree

I think it could be overwelming for non-fans and fans alike.

.

Looking back on the 1985 Awards show where Baby I'm A Star Was performed

or the 1989 SNL Electric Chair performance

or even the 2006 Tavis Smiley Reflections rendition

They all somehow made sense, I understood without trying too hard, what he was conveying

I think if I understood what 3rd Eye (Girl) means, what does this mean, what's the direction vision outside of 'real music by real musicians' the whole performance would just give me understanding.

What is Artificial Age, & PE what's the direction and connection to the title etc

Sometimes trying to go too deep you can loose a LOT of people in the translation

I was excited to see Prince perform regardless, but I think I can understand what Alan is saying

Prince needs to define his direction and bring some kind of cohesive language to 3rd Eye-AOA-PE the look the message etc

I'm talking about alans comment on trying to do too much

Like I said I enjoyed the show, and did not think too much about it, but I also think I understand what Alan is talking about.
No I'm not into Lady Gaga

Actually you know 1 person who said that -Alan Leeds said it, a guy from work on Monday when I came in he asked me what I thought, he also said it seemed like too much(he isn't a hardcore fan)

Like I said, I enjoyed the show, but I'm just reflecting on what Alan said, and how Prince introduced the new music to the world visually during this performance.

.

And seriously dude, here is no need at all for the rudeness. I'm having a conversation, I'm not arguing with you. There is no need at all for that. If you want to see yourself and friends as dumb you go ahead.

.

It is clear Prince probably put a lot of thought into this show, so he didn't get on to just shred the instruments and call it a night.

I've questioned in other discussions what is the direction of 3rd Eye (Girl) ect and any Prince fan knows Prince has some kind of direction vision purpose to what he is doing. Hanna in a recent interview said they are 'spreading light through their performances' My post was more in connection with the whole project and what his direction is, not just this performance which I've said I enjoyed and didn't think much of when watching.

Actually rick james had released material before his solo motown days..

He was in a group called the Mynah Birds w/ Neil Young.. Signed to Motown Records

My point was simply that RICK Jumped on the Prince bandwagon like everybody else after Purple Rain...

I would, but Prince actually had his first record out before Rick James had his first record out! Come Get It! came out a few weeks after For You did.

Rick just became a star on his own right before Prince did and was more experienced as a songwriter and musician (he was already in his 30s). That can easily provide one the impression that Rick had been releasing records before Prince did, but that's not the case. Of course, once Prince did albums like 1999 and Purple Rain Rick started copying him too and sometimes the copying was so blatant that you'd just have to shake your head in disbelief (the intro to "New York Town" that's pretty much the same as on "Lady Cab Driver", the music video to "Glow" ripping off "Purple Rain", the sitar stuff on "The Flag", "Loosey's Rap" having more than just a passing resemblance to Prince's stuff from the SOTT days, etc.). He said he disliked Prince but it seemed like he wanted to be him at the same time.

Rick released just one single with Mynah Birds as far as I know and his career as "Rick James" as we know him really started with his first album.

Regardless, I absolutely agree with you that he jumped the Prince bandwagon after Purple Rain. "Glow" is obviously his attempt to do something similar. "Cold Blooded" was quite likely influenced by Prince's stuff too.

he was writing about the SNL performance though which i don't see as being too deep.

THe lyrics to the songs he performed are pretty straightforward. The concepts well that could go over people's heads but what Alan was referring to was that performance specifically. The only things from that performance that could make people go wth are the clothe and glasses but I wouldn't call that overdoing it compared to the stuff Lady Gaga or Rihanna does

That performance was mainly about jamming and promoting the music on the 2 albums all in all.

I know you didn't bring this part up but

Alan claiming he underutilized Lianne La Havas is plain ridiculous when he got 10 minutes to promote his work.

Yes, I know he was talking about that specifically-the SNL performance

But we are still talking about Prince, he has a direction/vision for most of his stuff, and I'm more or less taking this and looking at this next direction for Prince in general.
.
I've said before I prefer (most of the time) big showy dressed up Prince. So I enjoyed the visuals. I like the shades etc
I'm looking forward to see if there is any vision/connection with 3rd Eye(is there more to it or is it just 3 musicians he's trying to promote) AOA & PE is it just a cool album title or is their more etc
Looking back on LotusFlow3r and 20Ten. the imagery the title of the album etc I wanted to see what his direction was, but outside of putting out some music there didn't seem to be much. Versus many other previous album directions like RainbowCHildren ONA Gold Lovesexy ATWIAD Dirty Mind performances singles the look title (at least to me) meant something more cohesive with a direction he was going into

This is an even more embarrassing thing to say than "Lovesex that's my jam"

and Alan's opinion is what some of you value when it comes to Prince?

[Edited 11/3/14 19:27pm]

NO WAY...what made "Lovesex,.....that's my jam," SO EMBARRASSING was the fact that this was a release party for 2 ALBUMS...and instead of promotion, we get a fumbling bumbling horrible unprepared person who knew NOTHING about Prince. Epic fail...

With Alan Leeds, we have a 70 year old man who just seems to have a very poor opinion of what Prince is doing...I think he's way off base, and wrong...but not that bad a situation. The "Lovesex" girl will stay in my memory a long, long time. Another wasted opportunity to promote a new release. Plectrum is not even in the top 200 anymore, and AOA is down to #54 or lower.

And again, what really bothered me, is that for this kind of webcast, since Prince is PANDERING to young people with the Auto-Tune, the stupid sound effects, he has to know that young people have very little patience. Just have a host say something for FIVE Minutes, and let the show begin...but no, we have to see this Idiot bumbling over Jimi Hendrix Pictures, asking questions on over five different outfits, etc...

And AOA sold ok for 3 weeks, PE sold well for 2 weeks, and now PE is dead off the charts, and AOA is following..and it's too bad... AOA is a decent album, and it is gonna die...sad

'These days', no. You think experience accumulates and an artist just gets better and better in every way? Prince has made brilliant tracks like 'Ballad of Dorothy Parker' that are all about nuance and subtlety and songwriting, but I don't think he can do that anymore. If he can, he's not showing it at the moment. People peak and then they fall, they don't just keep rising and rising with experience. That was a bit naive and fammy of you. Genius, he was.

But that's just your opinion I'm saying.

Well of course. All of these are just our opinions. smile

What I don't get is how Alan Leeds couldn't tell Lianne La Havas's vocals were off pitch nearly half the time.

Enthusiasm for the new stuff seems to have cooled. In the long run it's just not memorable stuff. It's time for something different, I think, instead of the same old shtick. His talent's almost limitless. His use of it at the moment is almost negligible.
