"Prince is no Alice Smith" - Alan Leeds

This is an even more embarrassing thing to say than "Lovesex that's my jam"

and Alan's opinion is what some of you value when it comes to Prince?

What is a trip is that Alice thinks it is great.

I scratched my head when I read that as well. I think he meant to say that he didn't need to dummy himself down to Alice's level. Just a weird statement all around.

The reality is Prince is 55 and still prances around like a 20 year old.

And you know what...that's COOL!! It makes the journey of following him interesting. Every few years he aligns his look with the general public and lets the focus be on the music (2002-2006).

Prince's reworking of "Another Love" is fantastic and I wish he would have played the whole thing on SNL. The medley did it no justice.

I remember on the 3rdeyegirl girl twitter account they had a clip of Alice singing 'Poplife', not the one from the carnegie hall show, but of her singing that song at one of her shows, and they had put up other vids of her, so not sure Alan is aware that she did sing a cover of 'Pop life' at one of her own shows. It is apparent Prince is a fan of Alice's music and talent. Alice is an awesome artist.

I like how Prince put his own twist to Alice's song.

V10LETBLUES

Many of us here have been saying the same thing for a very long time about his musical direction. And while I am not going to say he is wrong in general about lowering the bar, I find it odd he chose to attach these comments to an overall great performance. Especially when live performances have never been an issue, or in any way his weak point. My guess is, with all the hype around the performance he wanted attention.
Well he got it.

Alan Leeds is irrelevant. His opinion has no greater value and is no better informed than the average viewer.

He's been granstanding with a clear axe to grind for years now. Like many of those who make a living from 'managing' and 'reviewing' genuinely creative people, he has achieved very little himself.

I'm sure he and his brother Eric will continue to enjoy their little bitch-club and being wheeled out like geriatrics everytime anybody does a new Prince documentary.

Alan Leeds would attend the opening of a Prince-related envelope if there was the possibility for him to make a sound bite.

I totally respect his right to say this, but I don't agree with any of it.

There will likely be plenty of time for Prince to sit at a piano stool and blow us away with the subtlety of age. There's probably no rush. He'll likely still be doing this in his 80s, long after he's able to authentically burn his guitar.

The easiest thing for any of us to do is get our unique blueprint mixed up in the pursuits of others

Alan Leeds is right when saying that Prince is no Alice Smith, although he isn´t right in the context.

Prince is Prince and not a copy of anybody else and that´s for good.

Anotherlove is my jam, the best song from both currently released albums.

Sure, it is a cover but so what? Idc.

Prince put this song to another level.

Can´t stop listening to Anotherlove from Prince... cool

It really, really isn't.

I think his comment was harsh but there was truth to some of it.

well i'd rather listen to Alices tweet over at @3rdeyegirl . Nuff said. I feel for Alan...maybe..just maybe he needs to get his focus on D'angelo who has set the bar lower than a snakes belly!..at least Prince has managed to keep creative & keep his shit together!

Alan's advice to Prince : wear blue jeans.

Assless?

The Colors R brighter, the Bond is much tighter
No Child's a failure
Until the Blue Sailboat sails him away from his dreams
Don't Ever Lose, Don't Ever Lose
Don't Ever Lose Your Dreams

I think there is behind the scenes frustration that culminated in those comments. Who knows what Prince might be trying to communicate with Another Love, but it might not be a coincidence that Alan spoke out when he did.

Prince isn't sophisticated enough these days to get the nuance and subtlety of a song like Another Love, so his doesn't touch the original. Feel on the verses is ok, but his version is bells and whistles and no soul. Just rock it up and put a guitar solo on it (like One of Us). It's why the original trounces the cover because while the cover makes for a nice enough track it's just run of the mill. Could've been any song covered and done like that and he'd have done the same treatment and the same nice enough but unimaginative job with it. I agree with nearly all Alan Leeds said. I'd like to see him in his mature, badass, credible musician phase, not playing dressing up and trying to be a popstar. Alice Smith's last album was better than AOA, too, while I'm here. She's fantastic.

MY COUSIN WORKS IN A PHARMACY AND SHE SAID THEY ENEMA'D PRANCE INTO OBLIVION WITH FENTONILS!!

LOLs -- Prince isn't sophisticated enough after 40 years in the business as a songwriter? That's a patently patronizing statement that makes no sense. The only way it makes sense is that he's been the habitual target of so many bitter, funkier than thou fans that many really do think of him as a musical butler instead of the genius he is.

As for Alice Smith, she's great and it's nice that people are into her music but let's talk in 10 years and see if "Prince is no Alice Smith". As for Alan Leeds, if all he has to say is advise him to wear jeans and put down his performance in ridiculous terms, maybe he's the dude that needs advice cuz now he just sounds like your drunk uncle that is semi-retired and likes to relive his former professional glories by sending his unsollicited advice to his former boss.
