Alan needs to have several seats. The key phrase in Alan's screed is "many years ago" because that's the last time his observations carried some weight IMO. What he says has been too over-valued in the fan community for too long. He sounds like a bitter, dried up, old curmudgeon.
The one or two good points he makes are lost in the snide remarks and back-handed compliments that he spews every time he's asked about Prince. It's 2014 and he has lots of genuine problems to worry about with D'angelo than to waste his time manufacturing issues regarding Prince. The comments about underutilizing Lianne and trivializing Alice Smith are uncalled for too.
Again, he may have had a point in saying that there was a lot going on in the performance for example, but we need to stop acting like the opinion of a guy who hasn't been in contact with P in over 20 years is somehow carved in stone. In reality he has about as much knowledge of Prince today as his former hair stylist.
Had his former hair stylist (someone versed in haircare - point 1 and Prince's hair specifically on some level - point 2) had said, "Had he cut those damn split ends off and worn an albeit smaller - yet much tighter 'fro, it would have looked better." Which for all intent and purpose, it actually would have! Y'all would still have said, "They sound like a bitter, dried up, old curmudgeon." Purely for no other reason being - they had the audacity and unmitigated gall to say it.
Yeah, whatevs.....it's 2014.
Prince, in you I found a kindred spirit...Rest In Paradise.

Yes it is! And jacked up 'fros in 2014 - do happen to be
Are they or are they not?
I knew from the start that I loved you with all my heart.
Jeez couldn't he have played actual songs we like from the album.
This time, he did too much.
Jeez he played so many new songs, that's a lot to take!
Tomorrow: oh why oh why didn't he play a lovely Purple Rain medley
If there was ever a time to do it...
Next week: oh I just heard him play a Purple Rain medley
I had it up to here with Purple Rain, play the new songs.
In two weeks: why is he playing stuff from AOA?
That album is so over.
Christmas: I just unwrapped my 7 disc Purple Rain boxset and my only qualm is that he was too cheap to include a eight disc with one more live show.
New Year Eve: I do think Prince went a little overboard with that boxset - he doesn't know where to stop
yeah, if you take the opinions of many different people and put them side by side as if they were coming from one person, it sounds like that (non-existent) one person is really fickle.
There is no hidden meaning, his tech forgot to plug in the guitar, plain and simple.
No, he didn't.
Prince probably knew something was wrong immediately when he started playing, but because he's a musician, he knows how to just keep going until he figures out how to fix it.
Exactly, Prince coming out to play air guitar for 20 seconds was not part of the plan, not sure why folks are trying to come up with every excuse other than what common sense and reality dictate. Prince, and his crew, are human, just like the rest of us, aside from that, unexpected things happens all the time live. The challenge is how you cover it up or deal with it to mitigate the effect of those unexpected things, which Prince did great with, there was really nothing else he could do other than continuing to play air guitar for the entire song, putting his guitar down and letting Donna handle things, or just say wtf, plug the cord in and move on. The non Prince forums are already all over this speculating the his guitar playing was not even live, of course we know better, but displaying real music by real musicians does not include air guitar. If his and Donna's parts didn't start off exactly the same on Plectrum, it could have been much worse. At least listening to the audio alone one cannot tell.
Someone did not set the stuff up properly, I am sure he/she got a lashing.
Do you folks also feel that during the performance of Baby I'm A Star, during the 1985 grammy awards, when Prince knocked over the mic stand with his scarf, and they subsequently wacked himself in the head with it while picking it back up, that he was trying to showcase to the world how a lace scarf could win a fight with a mic stand and how his head could second as a bass drum?

I know I'm just a mean, old, bitter, un-musically talented hater and all that but isn't that what sound checks before LIVE performances are supposed to prevent?
any musician will tell you that things go wrong all the time during live shows regardless of prep.

Exactly . People are free to love or hate the performance but I got the feeling that his comments were about something else and he used the performance as a backdrop to express some unresolved bitterness, but I could be wrong. who knows.
Love the song selection, shocked by the performance. Terrible in every respect. Singing, playing, stage presence, sound - just brutal.
THe singing chick on Clouds was not that great (just pretty) and we all know 3rd EyeGirl is overrated - Prince is still good enough to overcome it all and he proved it again with 2 albums on the charts

You got that kinda of right about that female in the beginning but the songs kept getting better all the way to end!!!
I watched it again (this time with better audio quality) and the performance of Clouds was actually really bad. Anotherlove was the only highlight
Clouds was a bit sloppy. Prince was doing his thing on those keyboards though, even if it was probably not the best choice of chord voiceings. But just as many predicted, there were going to be problems with that track live, but you know what? Lianne La Havas put it down with her attitude and energy. Maybe they should have let Liv sing on it too, to thinken out the leads? IDK. Prince was probably trying to feature Lianne and, tbh, I think it worked and she represented quite nicely. Really all of 3EG brought a ton of attitude and energy. I loved it. Everybody looked good on camera. Even Prince with his sloppy 'fro (hey at least there is no doubt that it's real) and 3-eyed glasses and Donna with the Purple Yoda hood. Guitar cable snafu was handled with so much grace most people didn't notice. I really can't knock it. Oh and Prince's face the moment he realized his guitar wasn't plugged in was PRICELESS! Loved the performance.

Perhaps but my personal experience of being a contracted videographer of many numerous LIVE events since the year 2002 would give me cause to go... -

Just petty -- this was a rare live mishap on TV by a guy who has been consistely impeccagle, in what world does that merit your pompous scorn and predictable patronizing barbs?

Pompous scorn?! Man, you need to learn to not take it so personally if someone, for legitimate reasons, was less than thrilled with the performance last night...Some of us actually listen with our ears and formulate opinions based on what we hear, not on some catalog of personal issues, as so many of you are insisting. This claim is insulting and ignorant.

now you know that for some the "legitimate reasons" are that its not the Revolution and its not the 80s.

Contracted videographers have a third ear that gives them access to an acumen that we mere mortals can only dream to attain.

The actual word that I am most certainly, positively, sure you meant here is impeccable. Yet my recognizing and knowing that - because it stands in stark contrast to your inclinations, concerning Prince being infallible. And actually noticing that makes me "just petty." Oh well!

Well, I thought it was a good performance, and good choice of songs. My only issue is his look. Its far too 70's bad glam rock. I like the idea of him getting retro, but he needs a (new) stylist. The look is all wrong and it makes him look extremely dated.
will ALWAYS think of like a "ACT OF GOD"! N another realm. mean of all people who might of been aliens or angels.if found out that wasn't of this earth, would not have been that surprised. R.I.P.
